Breathe Sometimes bad news hits you from out of nowhere. How you react and respond determines the extent of the damage. Think things through; calm your emotions. Do not succumb to the instinctive, knee-jerk response. Find your center.

Illness When you have the will to survive, and things to live for, you can overcome almost anything.
To an extent.

Barriers Shatter barriers in your life. Do not allow any form of prejudice to taint your perception of the immediate now. It's amazing what you can discover when you get out of your own way.

Lost How many phone numbers do you remember these days? Even remembering your own can be a challenge when we're tethered to devices that tell us all we need to know and tuck away things that aren't immediately valuable/parsable.
When these devices are missing, though, what do we do? The inner workings have been abstracted for so long; our minds are no longer equipped to recall.

New Sincerity Postmodern irony isn't exactly dead. The push for sincerity remains a bit saccharine for the modern palette. It is no surprise; a great number of teens these days are 90s revivalists. Still, the borders of what David Foster Wallace termed "corrosive irony" are being pushed into new, opposite territory, and this coexistence is enriching art, science, and relationships between persons and cultures.
It's a great time to be alive.

Nativity To crudely paraphrase Gordon Downie: when the ancient slams into the transient, confusion ensues. Reality disappears into dots.

Apple Tree Spiral
Back in my Joesph Serian days, I owned a restaurant/nightclub/jazz lounge in Ohio called the Apple Tree. Had some fun with an old photo of it.
This photo employs the Droste effect; the image contains several smaller versions of itself as it is replicated while falling into the spiral. Theoretically, this could continue forever, but the technical limitations of raster art (as opposed to vectors or the advanced scripting behind animated fractals) cause the fifth recursion to degrade into pixel soup.
Droste was a brand of hot chocolate popular in the Netherlands; its box bore a picture of a woman serving a box of Droste, which in turn had a picture of the same woman serving a box of Droste, ad infinitum.

Tumor Uncertainty. Quiet terror. Flashes of panic. Hopefully we make it to the other side intact.

Oculus What lies beyond the vanishing point? Nobody knows for sure. For some, this is maddening. For me, this is the spice that keeps life interesting.

To Stop Running Sometimes it seems like we speed through life. Even with my businesses and altruistic endeavors in full swing, I need to slow down a bit more and re-energize.
This painting represents this realization, and demonstrates my plea for tranquility.
