What I do as an author's editor
I work as an author's editor with a specialty in science. The company that I work for primarily serves Japanese authors, both individual and corporate. Some of what I say will be specific to that; author's editors have a wide range of roles in publishing, and the role of, for example, a fiction editor, is quite different from my role.
