I just remembered last week, my brother-in-law and I had a long conversation about accents, and a good half hour of the conversatoin was about how British accents and Australian accents are pretty much the same thing but there’s just subtle differences, for example, word choice and tone. People with British accents are more professional and have a… more… sophisticated?… vocabulary. Australians sound similar, but their subtle difference is, I guess, their “slang”. It sounds like slang because it’s not the full word. For example, “G’day” (I always hear it more as “G’die”). 

And once we finished establishing the subtle differences between the two accents, my brother-in-law just goes, “And then there’s New Zealands which just have their own accent that is so easy to point out.” And I immediately went, “Like a New Yorker in Texas or the other way around?” “Exactly.”

Accents are great.

Can I just say that “g’day” and “shiella” and words like that aren’t common phrases around here, they’re mostly used by more rural areas or regions further inland than the more popular/coastal cities (Sydney, Brisbane, etc), if at all because I’ve only ever in my life witnessed someone speak like that once where a guy I was sitting next to in a teppanyaki restaurant exclaimed “Fair dinkum!” when the hot plate went up in flames Australia is kinda like ancient China where, depending on which province you’re in, the language and tone can be completely different and certain phrases can mean different things
