Richard Commey Presents IBF Lightweight Title To President Akufo-Addo
The International Boxing Federation’s Lightweight World Champion, Richard Oblittey Commey, on Monday, 11th March, 2019, presented his title to the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, at Jubilee House. In the presence of the President of the Ghana Boxing Association, Peter Zwennes, and the deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, Perry Curtis Okudzeto, President Akufo-Addo recollected the pledge made by Richard Commey some two years ago. “I remember vividly the promise you made on the stage at the Bukom Boxing Arena, a couple of months after I became President, and you have lived up to your pledge. Well done,” he said.
Richard Commey & Preside Akuffo-Addo The President continued, “The path you have trodden, despite the defeats and disappointments, you stuck to your guns knowing you had it in you to do it. It is a great story. It is a little bit my own story,” President Akufo-Addo told Richard Commey. In his remarks to the President, Richard Commey noted that his victory “is for Ghana, for Ga Mashie, and for the whole country.” Through his own foundation, he told the President that he was working hard to produce more world champions, adding that “we want to help them with equipment.” He urged the Government and the Ghana Boxing Association to look at issues of transparency with boxing promoters and managers, and the welfare of boxers in the country. In his response to that, President Akufo-Addo was impressed by the concern shown by Richard Commey concerning the welfare of boxers, to make sure that they have the right deals and are better off in boxing contracts. “It is good that you have spoken in front of the President of Association. It is for them also, with the support of the Ministry, to make sure that, in future, whatever arrangements are entered into on behalf of the boxers, are ones that balance the interests of the promoters, managers, as well as the boxers, so that the labourer becomes worthy of his hire,” President Akufo-Addo added. Malaysia open to proposals to resume MH370 hunt
Malaysia's government says it will consider resuming the search for a missing Malaysia Airlines flight if companies interested in the hunt come forward with viable proposals or credible leads, as families of passengers marked the fifth anniversary of the plane's mysterious disappearance. Flight MH370, carrying 239 people, became the world's greatest aviation mystery when it vanished on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014. Malaysia and China, as well as Australia, called off a two-year $141.6m underwater search in the southern Indian Ocean in January 2017 after finding no trace of the aircraft. A second three-month search, led by US exploration firm Ocean Infinity, ended similarly in May last year. Anthony Loke, Malaysia's transport minister, said on Sunday the government was prepared to reward firms searching for MH370 under a "no cure, no fee" agreement, meaning payment would be made only if they located the aircraft. The government had offered Ocean Infinity up to $70m under such an agreement for its 2018 search. "If there are any credible leads or specific proposals ... we are more than willing to look at them and we are prepared to discuss with them the new proposals," Loke told reporters at a Kuala Lumpur event marking the fifth year of MH370's disappearance. Ocean Infinity has expressed interest in another search, citing new technology developed in the past year after the firm successfully located an Argentinian submarine in November, a year after the vessel went missing. In a video shown at the event, Oliver Plunkett, Ocean Infinity's CEO, said his company is still reviewing all possible data on MH370 and thinking about how it can revive its failed mission. "We haven't given up hope," Plunkett said. "We hope we can continue the search in due course." Source: Aljazeera Read the full article
Algeria's Bouteflika warns of 'chaos' ahead of protests against him
Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has warned of a risk of "chaos" amid mass protests against his plans for re-election. In a letter published by Algeria's official APS news agency, 82-year-old Mr Bouteflika praised demonstrators for "peacefully expressing their opinions". But he also urged "vigilance" against possible infiltration of the protests by "domestic and foreign" forces. Mr Bouteflika announced last month that he would seek a fifth term. He has ruled Algeria for 20 years but has rarely been seen in public since he had a stroke in 2013. He announced last month that he would stand again for president, prompting large protests in towns and cities across the country, with students, lawyers and journalists taking part. Further large demonstrations are planned for Friday. Mr Bouteflika later said in another letter that he would step down early if re-elected, but the protests have continued. The president was transferred to a hospital in Switzerland on 24 February, for what his campaign described as "routine" medical tests. His campaign manager told Algeria's El Khabar newspaper on Thursday that his health raised "no concerns". A spokesman for the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG), where Mr Bouteflika is staying, said it had received 1,500 phone calls on Tuesday about the president after his location was revealed by French television programme Quotidien, according to French-language media reports. While most of the calls have reportedly been enquiring about the president's health, a number of videos posted to social media show prank calls from Algerians. Source: BBC Read the full article
Mourinho praises Solskjaer after Paris Saint-Germain win
Jose Mourinho says Manchester United's "phenomenal" Champions League victory against Paris Saint-Germain is testament to the impact his successor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has enjoyed. United became the first team in the history of the European Cup to overturn a 2-0 first-leg home deficit as Marcus Rashford's stoppage-time VAR penalty sealed a memorable comeback in Paris on Wednesday. Mourinho's former side are through to the quarter-finals of Europe's top-tier competition for the first time in five years and he was full of praise for the Norwegian caretaker boss. The dramatic win followed Ajax's shock success at another of the Portuguese's former clubs Real Madrid and speaking to RT, he was asked to choose his 'Special One' from the midweek European matches. "In terms of players, I was immediately thinking about Tadic, because he was a key player in that amazing match," Mourinho said. "But I think independent of the performances, Ajax and Manchester United results are phenomenal results, and if the responsibility in the bad days is for the managers, the responsibility of the good days is then also for the managers. "So for me, ten Hag from Ajax and Solskjaer from Manchester United. Incredible results, so credit to them." Source: Skysports Read the full article
R. Kelly breaks his silence on sexual abuse claims:
On Tuesday, Kelly broke his silence about the sexual abuse charges that landed him in jail last month. The embattled R&B singer spoke with "CBS This Morning" co-host Gayle King for nearly 80 minutes, saying all the women now accusing him of physical and sexual abuse are lying. "I am surprised that you agreed to do it. Why are you sitting down with us today?" King asked the singer. "I'm very tired of all of the lies. I've been hearing things, and you know, and seeing things on the blogs, and you know, you know, I'm just tired," Kelly said. "What are the lies that you're hearing that disturb you most?" King asked. "Oh my God. Um — all of them, got little girls trapped in the basement ... helicopters over my house trying to rescue someone that doesn't need rescuing because they're not in my house," he said, adding, "Handcuffing people, starving people. I have a harem, what you call it — a cult. I don't even really know what a cult is. But I know I don't have one." Chicago prosecutors have charged Kelly with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Three of the four alleged victims were underage when the suspected crimes happened. Kelly pleaded not guilty, but sources tell CBS News federal and state authorities in at least two states, New York and Illinois, are now investigating a variety of allegations. Kelly has faced intense scrutiny for more than a decade, which was reignited in January after the six-part Lifetime docuseries "Surviving R. Kelly." It featured interviews with seven accusers and former members of his inner circle. They all said Kelly preys on vulnerable women and young girls. "Have you done anything that you regret, have you done anything wrong?" King asked. "Lots of things wrong when it comes to women that I apologized, but I apologized in those relationships at the time that I was in the relationships, OK?" Kelly said. "Have you broken any laws when it comes to women?" King asked. "Absolutely not," Kelly responded Watch the full interview on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07yZF2lM1y0 Source: CBS News Read the full article
Michelle Obama Shares Why She's Getting Real With Women
Now that Michelle Obama has moved on from her time as the First Lady of the United States, she's getting very real with Americans. "Since we left the White House, I've spend most of my time focusing on finishing this book," she told ESSENCE Magazine. "The book tour will keep me busy for a while, and then I'll take some time to evaluate what's next. I'm in no hurry. What I know is that public service is in my DNA, so I'm planning to find ways to keep being useful…" To make her newfound time useful, her new book Becoming and its accompanying press tour is allowing her to be more transparent and empower women with very relatable experiences, including how she's dealt with the pressure of looking a certain way to fulfill her duties as a public servant. In regards to her fashion, she revealed: "As a black woman, too, I knew I'd be criticized if I was perceived as being showy and high-end, and I'd also be criticized if I was too casual." Just as we've never seen Barack Obama's better half wear anything less than perfect, we've also never seen one hair out of place. She alternated between straight, sleek style and effortless curls. However, as seen in all of her magazine covers, her maintained straightened hair with help from hairstylist Johnny Wright. We'd help one another in very concrete ways, like picking up each other's kids for dance lessons or a birthday party or anything else that came up…Of course, we leaned on our husbands as well…But for me, there was something special—something vital, even—about sharing this experience with other women who were going through the same kinds of stresses and challenges that I was…" If your challenges include wearing her natural hair texture and expressing yourself, Michelle proves, on this cover and in the article, that it's beautiful when you do. Angry Gold Coast Security customers seize manager’s car
A crowd of depositors of the Gold Coast Security in Tamale surrounded the troubled company on Monday demanding payment of their locked up investments. The desperate customers massed up outside the company’s Northern regional branch near the main Taxi terminal asking for immediate release of their monies as some of them acted violently towards staff of the fund management firm. The drama began when one manager of the company attempted to cause the arrest of the clients by reporting them at the Regional police headquarters for trespassing. After they refused to arrest the protesting customers, tempers flared, leading to a near rampaging situation. The vehicle of the manager who filed the police complaint was seized by the customers. The customers also detained the workers for several moments and forced them to call their superiors in Accra for a definitive response on when to expect repayment. Some of the aggrieved depositors said managers of Gold Coast Security have failed to release their investments to them despite countless timelines. One of them was overheard saying; “I pray that you people should come to Tamale one day, I swear God you will never go back to Accra again. This is just the beginning. We just want Papa Kwasi to know that he’s dealing with intellectuals and we are going to expose him to the whole country. We will tarnish his image – his international image would be dented. That’s what I just you guys to understand. Nonentities!” The disappointed customers, majority of them pensioners, threatened to take onto the streets if authorities failed to pay their investments. They called on the Security and Exchange Commission and government to intervene to force the collapsing firm to pay them. Shamsudeen Yakeeni speaking on behalf of the customers said they will take legal action against the firm. “What we are asking from them is a payment of our monies. They promised us last year that we will get our money in March this year. We are in March; we have not heard anything from them. The last time when, we came here they told us that they were going to give us certificates. I wonder which school we have attended that we needed certificates.”One of the customers asked. “We need our money, have our monies now turned into certificates? This is not what we need. We can’t wait any longer, because our shops are still locked up. We need our money to pay our children’s school fees’’ This is the second time customers of the firm, which is facing liquidity difficulties, have besieged the facility, in less than a month, protesting the delay of their locked up investment. One pensioner, 70-year-old, Dakura said the firm has refused to pay his investment since it matured in October 2018. ” I have been operated in Kumasi three times. I want my money; I cannot go back to Kumasi for my medical care. I have send personal message to Ndoum. I’m over 70 year old. Do you want me to die? So give me my money; that’s the only message I have for you”, the old insisted. Source: Starrfm Read the full article
Shame on NPP for Distorted Ghana's HISTORY - Prof Delle
The Chairman and Leader of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Professor Edmun Nminyem Delle, has expressed disgust at attempts made some elements, especially the government, to distort Ghana’s history. He said no Ghanaian needs second telling about who the founder of the country is. He stresses that it is a historical fact worldwide that Dr Kwame Nkrumah, CPP’s Founder, is also the founder of Ghana. For him, it is a shame for the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to change the history. A legislation was passed on Tuesday, March 5 in Parliament to amend Ghana’s public holiday, scrapping September 21 as Founder’s Day. It has been changed into Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day. New holidays bill passed despite Minority protest Founders’ Day will from hence be celebrated on August 4, according to the amendments made to the Public Holidays Act, 2001 (Act 601). Among other amendments is the celebration of January 7 as Constitution Day and the scrapping of May 25 and July 1 as AU Day and Republic Day respectively. These, Prof Delle considers, a sad reflection of history. “Let us even reflect on what is happening in Parliament, where history is being distorted,” he said on TV3’s morning show, New Day, on Wednesday. “We feel a bit ashamed that something which is a historical fact, this government wants to change it.” The Minority in Parliament has, however, indicated that it will reverse the decisions when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) reclaims power. The MPs of that caucus walked out on discussions and passage of the amendment bill laid before the House by the Minister of Interior. Read the full article
Fire Burnt Church; Not A Single Bible Touched By Flames
Firefighters that arrived at Freedom Ministries Church in Grandview, West Virginia were left shocked by what they saw. A devastating fire — so hot that firefighters had to back out at one point — was ravaging through the building, the Coal City Fire Department said in a Facebook post. But as they went through the charred wreckage, they noticed something extraordinary. “In your mind, everything should be burned, ashes. Not a single bible was burnt and not a single cross was harmed!!” the department wrote. The Facebook post, which went viral, features compelling photos of a pile of about a dozen intact Bibles surrounded by the rubble. “Though the odds were against us, God was not,” the firefighters added. No firefighters were injured in the operation. The cause of the fire is still unclear. Source: CNN Read the full article
John Paintsil Threatens To expose Don Bortey
Former Ghana defender, John Paintsil has urged former Hearts of Oak star, Bernard Don Bortey to apologize for the defamatory statements made against him or will be exposed. His comment comes after Bortey accused the former West Ham right-back of ruining his career during his stay in Isreal 15 years ago. Bortey’s trial with the Israeli side ended after he was accused of theft and deported back to Ghana at a time when his career was peaking. The former Aduana Stars winger claims the controversy-infested former Ghana defender falsely accused him of stealing a watch. However, Paintsil has warned Bortey to confess to the world the actual crime he committed in Israel that led to his inability to secure a contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv. “He came to Israel and I took him as a brother but 15 years after that, he still goes about destroying my image. He knows what he came to do in Israel that led to his stay being terminated by the club,” he told Atinka TV Sports Court. “I give him up to Monday to come out and tell Ghanaians exactly the crime he committed or I will be forced to come and show to the world what he did back by evidence. It was not about a watch he stole. “There is a damning secret that I have decided to keep for the sake of his integrity as a Ghanaian but if he has decided to blame me, I will spit it out if he doesn’t apologize by Monday 4th March,” he added. Mortuary Workers Declare Indefinite Strike
The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has declared an indefinite strike action. This comes after complaints submitted to the Health Ministry did not receive any fruitful outcomes. According to reports on hotfmonline, the general Secretary of MOWAG, Richard Kofi Jordan on Thursday said the indefinite strike will begin on March 5, 2019. According to the aggrieved mortician, they are exposed to several diseases in view of the dead bodies and chemicals they come into contact with but each time they raise concerns, the government appears to be dragging its feet. “The chemicals we use give us five different kinds of cancers, the government is aware of this situation. We are also at risk of blindness but nobody is addressing our challenges,’’ he stressed. He added that, no provision for universal medical checkups for mortuary workers in public health institutions and this and many other illegalities are what they want the government to correct. Mr. Jordan said members have been working more than the required eight hours without being allowed to take their annual vacation. He bemoaned how many proposals regarding their problem sent to the Ministry of Health on October 2017 and subsequently in June and September 2018 did not received any response. Richard Jordan advised persons who wish to die to either die before March 5 or postpone it until they resume work. Read the full article
ECG Will Resume Operations If PDS Fails To Deliver – Amewu
Energy Minister, John Peter Amewu has said the government will waste no time in taking over the operations of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) if the new manager, Power Distribution Services (PDS) fails to meet key performance indicators. PDS has taken over the management and operations of the ECG after Meralco consortium, a major shareholder in PDS won a bid to manage the national power distributor. PDS is expected to improve revenue collection, cut cost, and maintain stable power for two decades while injecting over 500 million dollars into the company. Speaking at a handing over ceremony in Accra, Mr. Amewu stated that the operations of PDS will closely be monitored to ensure performance delivery. “If your intervention in the drive is to reduce some of these challenges and make the value of power consumption affordable to the consumers, and make Ghana industrialized as a result of cheaper power productions and make the country an enclave of power distribution in the Sub-Region, then you are worth a private sector participation in the country.” “THE PRIVATE PARTICIPATION INTENDS TO ACHIEVE OVER THE CONCESSION PERIOD IS A VENTURE WORTH EMBRACING. I WISH TO ASSURE THE CONCESSIONAIRE PDS, THAT I AM GOING TO KEEP MY EAGLE EYE ON THE KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS ON THE TRANSACTION AGREEMENT AND IF FOR SOME REASONS ALL THOSE CHALLENGES ENUMERATED ABOVE; ON ANY SINGLE OCCASION DURING THE PERIOD THAT YOU ARE EXPECTED TO DELIVER EFFECTIVE SERVICES WILL COME AND TURN THE DOOR TO THE EXIST OR THE EXIST TO THE DOOR WILL CLEARLY BE AN OPTION”, HE STRESSEDRead also PDS takes over ECG from Friday March 1 PDS takes over ECG after an initial postponement The Electricity Company of Ghana has handed over operations of the company to Power Distribution Services (PDS).
