Druck Advent Calendar 2021, Day 3
The thing Fatou loves the most about spending time with her Cashqueens is that, when it’s just them, it always feels a bit like the rest of the world doesn’t matter. That’s what she was looking forward to with their winter holiday. It was supposed to be just them, in a cute little hostel in the mountains, spending a week together. It was supposed to be the best week of the winter.
But then, just a few hours after they arrived, a very familiar voice interrupted their third round of Exploding Kittens, just when Fatou was about to finally win.
“Why is your sister here?” Ismail’s accusing voice had rung out to where the Cashqueens were sitting in big cosy armchairs around one of the hostel’s fireplaces.
In the doorway, covered in snow and looking like fought their way up the mountain instead of just taking the normal path, were the Instas. They’d somehow ended up here too, despite no one from the Cashqueens inviting them. (Not that they couldn’t just come here of their own accord of course, but the Cashqueens had planned to come here first and wasn’t that the Code of Honour?)
And that wasn’t even the worst of it.
Now, on the morning of the second day, when Fatou and Nora leave their room (thankfully they don’t need to share that with the Instas) and go down to the breakfast room to join the others, Ava greets them with a sour look while Mailin is discussing something with the host.
“What’s going on?” Nora wants to know.
“Just take a look outside.” Ava points at the window, which, now that they’re properly looking at it, is completely white.
“It’s official, we’re snowed in,” Mailin announces, coming back to their table.
“You’re joking,” Nora says. Her face is somewhere in between annoyance and excitement.
“No, genuinely, we’re snowed in. They don’t know when we’ll be able to leave,” Mailin explains. “They’re guessing it’s going to be a few nights though, it snowed pretty heavily during the night.”
“I can’t believe it!” Now Nora definitely looks excited. “Snowed in? That’s so adventurous!”
“Yeah, if they weren’t here,” Ava shoots a look to the table next to them, where Finn and Constantin are having some sort of fight over breakfast cereal and a very sleepy Zoe keeps falling asleep on Ismail’s shoulder. None of them seem at all worried about the fact that they’re stuck here. Except maybe Kieu My, who looks a little bit like she’s about to freak out.
Fatou tries not to stare at her too much but she can’t help but notice that Kieu My, even when in the mountains in the middle of nowhere, looks so put together. Maybe that’s why she would like to get to know her better. To find out what Kieu My is like when she’s letting loose.
But she doesn’t get any more time to study her, because she can hear Constantin say “Come on, we’re going upstairs,” which leads to Finn and Ismail following him immediately, while Zoe grants Nora with a shrug. Fatou could swear that Kieu My, before she leaves too, gives her a small smile.
And maybe, just maybe, Fatou doesn’t mind that much that the Instas are here too.
