every audition he ever attended, he always
showed up early. whenever he got through, it was
typically almost always. or, at least, only when they
didn’t exactly mind someone who was taller than the
other partner, or if they were just generally taller than
the producers and organizers themselves. of course,
when he attended early, he always had the opportunity
to make sure that he was adequately ready so that
he didn’t end up injuring himself and ruining it for both
his partner, and himself. though he didn’t care too much
for the other, he knew that it would take a long time for
him to get back into the idea of dancing even if it was
the only thing that stopped him from doing something
that would put either himself, or his landlady in danger.
as his partner enters the studio, he allows
himself to get back to his feet and examines him
quickly, before narrowing his eyes and stands up
straighter, making sure that he is properly prepared
and then goes towards him, waiting patiently for
him to come towards him. when he gets a proper
look at his partner, he understands why they were
put together. he actually feels a smirk tugging at
his lips, but he ignores it, and as soon as the music
starts, he gets into the starting position and waits
until the cue, and starts his part that he is confident
he knows perfectly.
they’re in sync, they’re flying over the parquet floor as
if it was theirs, they seem like they’re made for each
other. they are equals. they spin and jump, they stride
around each other like cats and are as close as lovers,
their performance is energy and elegance and a spark
lighting up the tinder. their styles match perfectly, their
motions fall into place like they’re supposed to, and
john feels like this is the best he has ever delivered.
they slow down like the ocean after the storm, and it is,
if he dare say so, perfect. he knows it, even without
looking at the auditioners’ faces. they’re in, and he can’t
believe how suddenly, sophisticatedly all this has happened.
he has never seen this man in his life before, but somehow,
he seems to complete him. ‘we’ll notify you of our decisions.’,
they say ‘yes.’, they mean.
he changes back in silence, on the opposite side of the room
from the other, but when he’s done, there’s nothing to tame his
curiosity. he is incredibly intrigued, and he will get to the bottom of it.
