Despite what it may have seemed like, there was an edge of desperation to Shinsou’s actions. He was just as, if not more, desperate to get into the hero course. Everyday he wasn’t transferred was another day he’d have to catch up with. Failure wasn’t an option for him. A glaring hole in his quirk like that could kill his chances. There was no allowing that. Shinsou couldn’t go on without knowing if there was something there to be concerned about.
However, he knew that Midoriya needed to be earnestly trying to get out of his quirk. If Midoriya wasn’t scared or worried at all by being under Shinsou’s control he wouldn’t have the same drive to escape. So, despite hating it, Shinsou needed to play the bad guy. He knew he wouldn’t do anything bad with his quirk, but he doubted Midoriya would be certain.
“Just so you know, if you don’t break out of my control there will be consequences.” A wicked grin grew on Shinsou’s face as he spoke. He knew after the sports festival that he had randomly grabbed Midoriya’s mind a couple times, but done nothing with it. Perhaps he could lead Midoriya to believe that was because others were around. No one could see them right then. No one would be around when they tested this out. Maybe it was risky to frighten the other before actually getting into the testing, but Shinsou wanted to make sure Midoriya would clearly hear his words before going under.
Now, it was just waiting for Midoriya to respond and then his mind would be Shinsou’s.
Consequences. That wasn’t too surprising, but it was the vague notion of them, no specifics attached — would Shinsou do something after the fact? Would he have Izuku do something, then? He tried to come up with something that he might use to blackmail him, but... was it going to be anything worse than a high school dare?
Was there anything worse than a high school dare that he couldn’t decline?
Whether it was something small or something that would change his reputation, Izuku knew it was his incentive to break free. They weren’t the stakes laid out in front of him at the sports festival, but they were stakes nonetheless.
— “ If I don’t, ” he echoed, voice sealing his fate.

Izuku had his classmates’ personalities down — their goals, their vibes, how their quirk manifested in their everyday lives — even if he didn’t know them that well. A few he didn’t talk to much, but everyone had their own friend groups, after all; Izuku had his, but he was on friendly terms with most everyone.
It was students from other classes that continued to surprise him.. Class 1-B was the closest he could come to when it came to judging similar aspects, but even then, it was only surface knowledge. Things that everyone else knew. So for general studies, it wasn’t surprising to say Izuku knew nothing about anyone in that class, save one.
— “ Shinsou ! There you are, ” Izuku said, scratching the back of his neck with nervous energy. “ I’ve been looking for you. ” His brows furrowed with confusion and a bit of frustration, but he continued nonetheless: “ Or were you looking for me? I noticed — I think — you were giving me odd looks anytime I saw you these past few days, so I thought that, like, maybe — ”
Huffing, Izuku felt his face flush with embarrassment as he struggled to explain, to rationalize, as if he had to give some sort of excuse for singling the other student out. “ Did I do something to make you angry ? ”
mindlesspurplegaze:
“Then you’d just be a short piece of broccoli.”
— “ That’s still an improvement regardless ! We all level up on our own time ! ”

At the response once more stating Midoriya had no information, Shinsou grit his teeth. The answer pissed him off again. It’d anger him time and time again. If Midoriya didn’t know that meant there was a glaring hole in Shinsou’s quirk that he didn’t know about or know how to stop. Shinsou couldn’t afford that kind of thing. He was already behind on everything with the hero students. He couldn’t be behind with his quirk too. The idea killed him.
The idea of it being a fluke would be soothing. It would mean that Shinsou wouldn’t be so easily defeated again. Not that he wasn’t working on getting physically stronger. Training with Aizawa wouldn’t just leave him weak. He’d been training, getting stronger and that, he couldn’t rush, couldn’t push further without time. His quirk, that would happen much faster. He just needed to know the weaknesses of it first. He needed to fix any holes that were there. He’d already been working on it by learning how to mimic people’s voices at least a little bit.
There was only one solution to this.
“Then let me brainwash you again. If it was a fluke, you won’t be able to get out of it no matter what,” Not that Shinsou would do anything nefarious with Midoriya under his control, “so if you’re trying to be so friendly and helpful all the time let me figure out if you can get out of it again.”
Shinsou knew he wasn’t being fair. It wasn’t Midoriya’s fault if his quirk had a weakness. That didn’t keep Shinsou from wanting to yell at Midoriya about it though. That didn’t stop the fear from gripping his heart every time he thought about how weak he was.
There was a beat of silence from Izuku at the request, surprise painting his features visible and open, and he tilted his head in thought. That hadn’t been what he’d expected; though, he couldn’t argue with that logic. If it was a fluke, if it had nothing to do with One for All, then even if he did try to break out of the hold, he wouldn’t.
But the situation wasn’t the same. Izuku didn’t feel the desperation, the pull of fear at the knowledge that with just a few steps, his only chances at showing the world he was here would be gone. Shinsou wasn’t feeling the same desperation, even if he was frustrated and determined to keep his concentration.
It wasn’t an exact repeat, but there wasn’t really harm in trying. Shinsou wouldn’t have him do anything embarrassing — at least, not when their goal was so serious now. Izuku let his gaze meet Shinsou’s again.
— “ Okay, ” he said, breath catching in his chest, but he wasn’t afraid. If anything, he felt excited.
mindlesspurplegaze:
“I’m sure some will find your dirty, green, over-excited, gremlinness appealing.”
Ouch! Izuku clutches his chest. “ I can change ! No more gremlin poses. ”
mindlesspurplegaze:
“Yeah well you’re the sunshine child so no one other than Bakugou wants to hurt your feelings.”
— “ I want to be a cool hero, not a gremlin one... ”

“First off you’re green and the second thing is that when you get ready to attack people with your kicks you do this gremlin pose and third, you’re short.”
— “ My pose ?? I do a gremlin pose ? Nobody’s told me anything about that ! ”

He starts a little at the call of his name, totally lost in his thoughts.
“–What?” Oh, wait, orange tabby. “I saw one a bit ago. Is it yours?” He’s too surprised to start off with anything sarcastic, a little confused that HE of all people, is the one Izuku waved down.
Izuku jogged in place, but his eyes practically lit up when Monoma admitted he’d seen it. So it had gone this way! He was on the right track. Izuku grinned.
— “ My responsibility, ” he corrected with a nod, his voice and actions showing his clear restlessness. “ For now, anyway. I’m trying to get it back to its owner, but I don’t think it likes me very much ! ”
His steps paused as if he’d realized something. “ Monoma ! Are you good with cats ? ”

Shinsou rolled his eyes at the simple ‘oh’ that fell from the other’s lips. Of course Midoriya would mock him by just acknowledging his words with one noise. Glare becoming harsher, Shinsou hoped Midoriya would actually answer. Otherwise this was a waste. Well, at least if the other wasn’t going to answer his questions, Shinsou could just walk away. It didn’t matter if the other beat him. Shinsou would get stronger. He would surpass the assholes of the hero course. At least, that was what he told himself.
Midoriya’s confusion just served to frustrate Shinsou even more. It didn’t feel like he moved his finger on his own? “That makes no sense.” There had to be something behind that confusion. Maybe Midoriya just didn’t want to tell him so he would have the upper hand if he faced Shinsou’s quirk once more. “Overwhelmed, confused, scared, whatever that happens to everyone. Moving doesn’t.”
Guilt settled into Izuku’s stomach like a stone, heavy and cold, but that wasn’t anything new. He hated keeping secrets — always had, especially to people that mattered to him, if his spill to Kacchan had anything to say about it — but this was one that he had to keep.
Maybe Shinsou’s quirk wouldn’t break like that under any other circumstance that didn’t involve One for All, but he couldn’t soothe the other’s doubts without giving himself away. Izuku tried to make himself feel better in that he wasn’t necessarily lying by saying he didn’t understand what caused it; that day was still a mystery to him.
— “ Really, though! If I had any more information to give you, I would. ” His words were earnest, urgent. “ There’d be no benefit to me if I didn’t tell you something so important regarding your quirk; competition or not, in the end we still both want to become heroes. ”
Izuku begged Shinsou to believe him with his gaze, eyes wide. “ Really, I still think that day was a fluke. I should’ve walked right off. ”

— “ Um - excuse me ? ” Izuku anxiously shifted from foot to foot, hand raised in a half-wave. The other’s stoic expression unnerved him, even if he’d heard that just seemed to be the way her face rested. “ You’re... Silencer, right? From 1-C ? ”
