73 Questions with Lupita Nyong'o
Lupita Nyong’o in Prada | Met Gala 2017
Lupe Valentina Mercado
rosario dawson, thirty-nine, lobster roll, private investigator
- Lupe Mercado is a native of Coventry. Much to her chagrin, she’s moved throughout different neighborhoods in her childhood because of her mother and grandmother. They raised her. Her father skipped town before she was born. Lupe never met him or any of his family. She’s only known the Mercado side of her lineage. Life was not always easy. Love was always there but not money. They struggled from time to time because her grandmother’s Cuban cuisine restaurant was slow on business. The restaurant was in endanger of closing a few times. Lupe has made it her mission to make sure that the never sees a closing date. Thankfully, the people of Coventry loves Habana Libre’s authentic Cuban cuisine.
- Since she was a kid, Lupe’s been a bad ass. Fearless, vigorous, and adventurous describe her perfectly. Her grandmother affectionately refers to her as a daredevil. Sports were her thing growing up. She could get tough and dirty when playing basketball, volleyball, softball, and throwing around a football with some boys from the neighborhood (depending on which neighborhood she resided in at the time). But her skateboard was her love. Her skateboard was special because her mother saved up so much money for it. It was a used skateboard from a thrift store but Lupe considered it to be shiny and new. She broke it in half when she was fourteen but she kept it. It’s somewhere at her place now in all of its memorable glory.
- Lupe’s decision to join Coventry’s police force was not a surprise. It is one of Coventry’s most physical and dangerous occupations. The job had Lupe’s name written all on it. She was a young officer that was a great asset to her community. She was fair and just. Lupe treated everyone with kindness until they were disrespectful. That’s when the hard ass comes out. (Just so you know, Lupe has such a potty mouth when she’s frustrated, annoyed, angry, and so on.) Lupe was injured during a shoot out. She was shot three times. After a much needed break, she was forced to work in the office rather than patrol the streets. Lupe hated the new position. The chief refused to put her back on the streets. So Lupe regrettably quit after sixteen years on the force. She broke up with her girlfriend of three years. Lupe felt alone. She moved back in with her mother and worked in the restaurant for a short time until the position as an investigator fell into her lap.
- You would be surprised at the amount of people that are willing to hire a private investigator. Lupe’s used the skills that she acquired in her service as a police officer to do her job and do it well. From wives trying to figure out what their husbands are up to, children trying to find their missing parents, mothers needing to know what caused their children’s disappearances or deaths, and anything in between. Lupe has experienced the best and the worst that Coventry has to offer in all of her thirty nine years.
REQUEST | brad pitt as ex-husband | 54-56 | snickerdoodle
[tw: drugs]
Just look at him. Look at that face, look at that body. That’s what attracted Joey (Tracee Ellis Ross) to Brad when she first saw him on that famous Internet matchmaking site so many years ago. They met in 2000 - the year of Y2K when almost everyone was skeptical that the world was going to end and the technology would explode! This was the year before terrorism. Glitter, rhinestones, and bell bottom jeans were the shit . Joey took a chance on love. She was 27 and living and working in New Orleans. Then she made an account on that site and met Brad , 30s, single, self made business man, came from a good (wealthy) family in Connecticut and now he lives in Coventry, Massachusetts. He was too good to be true. She thought Brad was a Catfish before Catfishes existed. But she took a chance on him - she jumped with leaping faith and fell for him so hard. He is just as goofy and sociable as she is. Big kids if you will. Lovers of life and passion. They were married after four months of dating because they knew this was too legit to quit. They were happily married for 11 years and miserable for 2 until they divorced.
Joey and Brad have tried to muster up a friendship but they are just trash at doing so. They are usually awkward around each other trying not step on toes. They divorced for several reasons, one being that Joey doesn’t want children and his commitment to his job rather than their relationship. So they divorced amicably. It’s been 3 years and nothings changed. But the attraction to each other is slowly building up again.
Brad is around 54-56 years old. He’s a successful businessowner. The business is up to you. Just know he’s successful in and out of Coventry. He’s a passionate, goofy, but wise kind of a man that enjoys family and friends. He can be very dedicated when he’s passionate about something to the point he blocks out other things in his life. He loves to sail, that’s his favorite pass time along with cooking Italian food. He hates confrontation and would rather be passive aggressive about things. He’s had somewhat of a past with drugs but changed his life around when a buddy of his overdosed. He’s an eligible bachelor in Coventry but he still has somewhat of an eye for his ex-wife. If Brad Pitt is unavailable I’m open to other faces!
You’re trying so hard to be an artist and craft something and create an audience that appreciates your work in the same way as a director or a writer, or whatever it is. That’s what you’re still doing as an actor, is hoping that people will want to suspend their disbelief with you. You’re creating a relationship. And it can be thrown away because someone takes a bad paparazzi photo. It’s so dismissive and disrespectful but it’s a reality. There’s nothing you can do.
Johanna “Joey” Evelyn Tempest
tracee ellis ross, forty-four, cranberry pie, advertising executive
[tw: eating disorder]
- Goes by Joey. Johanna is pretty much exclusively for her mother. She is originally from Los Angeles, California. She has an adopted sister who is much younger than her. They are not as close as Joey wants them to be because of their significant age difference and Joey left home early to pursue modeling. She walked her first New York runway at 16 and by the time she was 18, she was featured on runways in Paris and Milan. To everyone but Joey, life was seemingly good. While she was receiving praise in the fashion and modeling industry, she suffered from bulimia. The pressure to stay thin was constant. The competition was fierce. Joey grew sicker with each passing day. One day, during New York Fashion Week, she passed out from exhaustion and hunger. She was admitted into a hospital that night and by the end of the week, she returned home to LA to live a regular life. Joey reminisces on the good days of her modeling career and tries to forget the painful ones.
- Adjusting back to normalcy was difficult at first but Joey found her way. She attended Xavier University in Louisiana and lived there for quite some time. She had a life there: friends, new family, a great job at a marketing firm, and great food (eating is a favorite pass time at her) but there was a lack of eligible, qualified men that were worth her time. Dating seemed hopeless - her friends were terrible matchmakers so Joey decided to take matters into her own hands. She joined the latest matchmaking site at the time. (The year was 2000.) She met the man that would become her husband and eventually be her now ex-husband. Thirteen years of marriage - thirteen years of getting to know this one person day in and day out. And now, after three years of divorced life, they are still awkward around one another. (It’s a cute awkwardness/ passive aggressiveness just because they want to avoid any conflict.) He’s the reason she moved to Coventry.
- She’s made a comfortable life in Coventry because she loves this city dearly. She adopted Coventry as her second home. She is a hot commodity at House Advertising Agency where she is an advertising executive. Her charismatic, friendly, and humorous personality helps in relationships with clients. It also helps with her personal life but not so much with her marriage.
If I were to win I would be the second woman in all time to ever win… Nell Carter in 1981 for “Give Me a Break” as the first black woman to win an Emmy as Lead Actress in a Comedy. Phylicia Rashād for “The Cosby Show” being the last nominated. And I think that the fact that it’s been 30 years it’s a real comment on the industry to a certain extent because it’s not necessarly that there hasn’t been the work to be recognized or celebrated. So I think if I were to win I would receive it on behalf of all of those extraordinary women of color that are comedians that have done this work and have been worthy of recognition and celebration. Chadwick Boseman, Danai Gurira, Michael B. Jordan for Lupita Nyong’o
chadwick boseman | 40-43 | clam chowder (the no non-sense, uptight, protective brother)
danai gurira | 37-39 | lobster roll (the independent, imaginative, technologically savvy sister)
michael b. jordan | 32 | cranberry pie (the creative, talented, slightly immature, lover boy brother)
Look at these beauties! This is a request for Aluna’s siblings. Chadwick, Danai, and Aluna grew up in Bronx, New York Their mother and father were married for twelve years before their father cheated on their mother with a co-worker. Bam, Michael was born when Aluna was just three years old. The three older Lagat children have always been close because they were raised together in the same household. They share similar experiences that have brought them closer as siblings. Michael came into their lives when he was five years old. Their mothers ended any beef that they had against each other. The three older siblings welcomed Michael with open arms. Aluna was just happy that she wasn’t the youngest anymore. Their bond grew even stronger when Michael’s mother unexpectedly passed away. Chadwick, Danai, and Aluna’s mother took Michael into their home. By the time they were all eighteen, they left home to pursue higher education or their dreams (Michael went off to Los Angeles to pursue a music career). Somehow, they’ve all made Coventry their home.
Chadwick has always been the nucleus of the siblings. He took on the father figure role when their father left. (None of the siblings have spoken to their father in ten years. He purposely went missing.) Chadwick always had to be strong even when he felt like breaking down. He grew up quicker than he should of which resulted in his no non-sense ways. The best way to describe him is a perfectionist. Life was not easy for him, he had to work twice as hard to be just as good as his peers personally and career-wise. (His career is up to you but I see him in a high power position.) Now that he is a single, successful man in his 40′s, loneliness succumbs him. He wants a family of his own but finding the right woman is difficult because he attracts women that want him for his money rather than him as a person.
Danai is the reincarnation of their mother - strong minded, strong willed, and incredibly independent. She is practically a genius - educational opportunities felt into her lap as a child. By the time she graduated from college, she had close to a hundred thousand dollars worth of scholarship money that she took to UCLA to study in the technology field. Usually, Danai is the only Black woman in her field. She has worked damn hard for her position in her career. She is widely recognized for her work in the STEM field. Danai has been interviewed countless of times, on the cover of O and Essence magazine (OH YEAHHH!), and honored for her work and her Black Girl Excellence. In the meantime, she’s been with her boyfriend for over eight years. (If you could make her boyfriend Andrew Lincoln I would love you forever. My heart yearns for Richonne rp plots.) She’s fearful of taking the big plunge into marriage because she’s frightful of divorce. But she does want to have kids - soon! It’s just that her boyfriend is pretty traditional in the sense that he wants to get married then have kids.
Michael is the baby boy, the wild card, the black sheep if you will of the family. Aluna and Michael connect the most because they are both creatives. (Aluna is an aspiring film maker and Michael is a musician.) She tends to baby him for several reasons. He is her younger brother, his mother died when he was eight years old, and she just loves him so much. She was pretty overbearing to him as a kid and he gladly accepted her as his security blanket. When he was eighteen, he left New York and moved to Los Angeles for a record deal. He’s a very good singer, drummer, and piano player. Michael joined a boy band when he was twenty in hopes that maybe one day he would get a solo contract. The band had two albums. Their first album had major success but the second one FLOPPED hard. For several years, Michael traveled back and forth form LA to NY in hopes of popping off his career but there has not been any major success. Don’t pity him. Michael decided to go the independent route and take his career into his own hands. He moved to Coventry two years ago and lived with Aluna for a while until he got back on his feet. He works a job that he doesn’t care for (that job is up to you) while he pursues his passion.

Aluna Makena Lagat
lupita nyong’o, thirty-five, snickerdoodle, broadcast journalist, passionate filmmaker
- Aluna Lagat is the third child of her mother and father. They got a divorce when Aluna was just three because her father cheated and produced another child, Aluna’s little brother. For sure, there will be a request for the rest of the Lagat siblings!
- Since her childhood, she’s always been emotionally driven. She’s been called sensitive way too many times than she would like but as she has gotten older, she’s learned to accept that she is just a big ball of love, tears, and dramatics. Ultimately, being an emotional person has helped her with her career as an on air broadcast journalist. She works at the highest rated morning show in Coventry.
- Aluna enjoys life. She did not have the best childhood growing up in Bronx, New York. Her father was a no non-sense, super strict man that came to America from Kenya. Her mother was rarely available to just be that caring, supportive parent because she worked so many shifts as a nurse so that she could take care of three little kids. When Aluna left home for college, she pledged optimism. However, her devotion to happiness and turning the other cheek in the midst of chaos can get her into sticky situations.
