Staying the Course

Even one month later it didn’t feel real. It felt like she was living in a nightmare. Her friend. Her President. Was dead. One month ago she had been typing up her letter of resignation. One month ago, she had picked out a slogan for her Senate Run. Give ‘em VG. Now, as the nations top law enforcement officer, it was her job to bring her friend’s killer to justice. (Alva Gardiner Vance, 45, Connie Britton) is the Attorney General of the United States and First Lady of North Carolina. Daughter of North Carolina’s first Republican Governor in almost one hundred, Alva grew up in a world of garden parties and junior league parties and to this day is very much a motherfucking lady she was brought up to be thank you very much. Though a graduate of Yale Law School, Alva often struggled to be taken seriously by her male peers who saw her as a diversity hire at best and a sinecure at worst at the corporate law offices she worked at, a reputation that seemed only to be further cemented due to her children's rights advocacy. Alva decided that if she couldn’t win them over, she would beat them. Alva turned the skills and loopholes she had learned in the world of corporate law and entered the field of anti-trust law. in time Gardiner Vance would go on to win one of the largest judgements in state history in North Carolina against Duke Energy.

Despite her own successful legal career, before her appointment to the Justice Department, her political fortunes were tied to her husband, David Vance. Vance, a hard-drinking, womanizing, hell raiser seems an odd choice for the velvet gloved and iron fisted Alva. Where she is subtle, he is blunt. Where she is prone to fits of fantasy and idealism, he is maddeningly practical. Where her frequent railing against insurance companies and big banks have frightened off some campaign contributors and made her a liberal icon in the state, he is more cautious and even conservative. To many observers, the two seem a strange match and one that shouldn’t have worked out but the two have stood by each other despite persistent rumors of David’s infidelity. And, despite her own career, Alva has continued to carry out her duties as First Lady of the state despite her cabinet appointment.
