It’s honestly funny when SS fans, in response to criticism of their pairing, start saying, “but SNS is toxic too!”, completely ignoring the point: the dissatisfaction with SS isn’t primarily about “toxicity,” but about how pathetic this pairing feels.

Sakura does NOT know Sasuke. She does NOT understand him. More than that, she doesn’t even TRY to understand him. Starting from childhood, when she has the audacity to criticize one orphan in front of another (basic empathy skills, hello), and then at the moment Sasuke is leaving the village, she once again talks about herself and her feelings—how sad and miserable she’ll be without him. She doesn’t even stop to think about why Sasuke is leaving. She puts Sasuke’s pain from losing his entire family on the same level as her own pain from a boy not returning her feelings.

Then she says she’s ready to leave with him. And to me, this is one of the key moments showing that Sakura doesn’t understand Sasuke at all. Sasuke grew up in an environment centered around family; he loved his parents, his clan. That was his highest value—something he lost. Sakura, who has living parents, is ready to abandon them for a boy who rejects her again and again. Sasuke could never love someone like that.

Then comes another monologue from Sakura where she talks about HERSELF: “If we’re together again… I’m sure we’d be able to go back to those days…”. What “those days”? The days when he told you to focus on training instead of trying to go on dates with him? Those “days” exist only in Sakura’s head. In reality, they never existed. And Sasuke understands this, sees that selfishness, and puts her under genjutsu.

What’s even funnier is that this doesn’t change over time. Even as an adult, Sakura can’t answer a very simple question from her own daughter: did Sasuke wear glasses? Seriously? Do you really want to convince me that someone who loves a person wouldn’t know the answer to that?

That same adult Sakura shows no interest in the history of the clan she so eagerly associates herself with. She decorates herself with the Uchiha crest without even bothering to learn that it’s something that must be EARNED—because wearing it without possessing the clan’s techniques is disgraceful.

That’s why Sakura’s “love” for Sasuke comes across as pathetic first and foremost. And that’s the main issue—and the reason people dislike this pairing.
