day 4: swimming pools - kendrick lamar (2012)

- this semi-autobiographical album (good kid: m.a.a.d city) covers the life of a teenager growing up in compton through music, immersive voice acting and a disjointed narrative jumping back and forth in time. this song explores themes of addiction, peer pressure, revenge and trauma.

- having been ambushed for straying into the wrong street earlier in the day, the usually-teetotal kendrick nurses his pain and humiliation at a house party. encouraged by his peers, he suppresses his better judgement and drinks far beyond his limit, awakening the same self-destructive tendencies that had consumed his grandfather. as he vomits from the window of a moving car, he dully wonders why none of the friends who had pushed him to drink are trying to help him. the song ends with the group encountering his attackers in the street and seeking revenge. he sees his friend's brother shot and killed in the exchange, pushing him further into nihilism and depression.

- i chose this because it shows rap music's ability to communicate the day-to-day realities of racialised poverty in the united states. this album describes a world that i've never experienced first-hand, a world that's easy for most people to remain ignorant about and that's regularly demonised in white supremacist society. it takes work to undo this kind of pervasive racism, and that work begins with humanising the communities affected by it. rap music is able to do that directly, in a way that other genres and art forms simply can't. movies and tv cost millions, books require publishing and promotion, but rap allows marginalised people to tell their stories to millions with nothing but a laptop and a mic.
