i feel so..... unmexican. im the 3rd generation to be born in the states and ive only visited my mexican family once. im so racially mixed (some white, black, and indigenous american along with my mayan and spanish mexican descent) that i dont feel like any of them. im just a watered down version of all my ancestry.
Hi Anon, I feel like you and I are in very similar boats.
I know it’s really hard to feel like you can connect when you’re part of so many ethnicities. The good news is, you are definitely not unmexican. You are very Mexican!
It might help if you don’t look at yourself as 46% this and 22% that 31% of this other one and so on. You’re not watered down versions, you are a full person. You are a version of each and every one of those. You are all of those things and it’s okay if sometimes you feel closer to one over the other.
There’s lots of Mexicans who are 3rd gen, or more, who’ve never been to Mexico for varying reasons. That’s not what makes them Mexican and only visiting your family once doesn’t make you any less.
Remember, your Latinidad, your Mexican-ness, is YOURS to define. No one else’s. Feel free to immerse yourself as much or as little as you’d like.

All images from the series 911 by Chris LaBrooy. After graduating from the RCA with an MA in design products, Chris first began to use 3D as a simple tool to visualise ideas for furniture and products that he could not afford to produce. As 3D technology and hardware evolved, Chris saw an opportunity to explore CGI as a creative medium in itself with which he could subvert and twist familiar everyday things into new typographic and sculptural forms. Chris is interested in the intersection between typography, architecture, product design and visual art. Chris LaBrooy has exhibited at the design museum in London and has been featured in many publications covering design, products, typography and illustration.

Dabao Primary School and Community Cultural Centre in Guangxi
From the architect Project Mingde and PAN Foundation:
Dabao village is remotely situated within the mountain range of Guangxi province in China. The settlement provides home to around 110 families of an ethnic minority group called the ‘Yaos’. The group has its own distinctive dialect and culture. Yao people are often identified by their unique colourful traditional costumes.
The design concept is structured around the use of layers of walls in addressing the challenges originated from the steep topography of the site. A long bamboo façade along the southern site boundary not only acts as a protective barrier from the road outside, it also regulates the transmission of noise and daylight whilst ensuring privacy of occupants at the same time. The intelligent use of different diameters and lengths of bamboo tubes responds adequately to the different light requirements of the rooms for their respective functions.
