Is Fluid Management Costing You ££££’s

In a market where new equipment is purchased annually to keep up with rapid vehicle technology changes, every penny counts. Those you do manage to save can be reinvested to keep your business a step ahead of its competitors.

A common area within your workshop that may lower profit returns is your oil management system. The fluctuating costs of lubricants means that wastage and inventory control is becoming a talking point within the industry and is now of high importance. Dura’s fluid management systems are designed in 3 modular widths can be fitted as tall or low level cabinets and can save your workshop money.

The integrated OMS system can be programmed for each job to deliver the exact quantity of fluid required. Each measurement of fluid can be designated to individual technicians and vehicles reducing consumption by ensuring only the required amount is used.  On completion of fluid delivery the OMS system can be used to automatically update your inventory system ensuring you never fall below critical levels that could result in downtime and a loss of earnings.

It is also possible in many cases to link the dispensing value directly to your workshops DMS system, ensuring products are invoiced to the correct vehicle and charged accordingly to return profits against fluid dispensing.

The most obvious benefit of a fluid management system is the cost savings, but they can benefit your business in several other ways.

Retractable reels and removable drip trays ensure oil stays where it’s supposed to be and doesn’t end up on floors creating health and safety risks to staff and possibly customers.

Dura builds new bridges in Bologna

Since originally launching our range in 1997, Dura Ltd have always been well represented at automotive shows around the world, spreading news about our latest workshop furniture products at cutting edge exhibitions such as Automechnika and the Commercial Vehicle Show. As a fantastic way of meeting new distributors / clients and building relationships with old ones, the Dura team have delivered fantastic solutions at each show we’ve attended, helping customers to ‘touch and feel’ the quality and flexibility of our award winning range.

To help build the awareness of the Dura brand throughout Europe and meet with a number of our existing distributors, on May 20th Dura headed to Bologna, Italy to attend the prestigious Autopromotec show. Now in its 26th year, Dura’s involvement revolved around the showcasing of our automotive equipment and aftermarket products, sharing our ideas about how automotive brands can increase workshop efficiency and create a system that complies with CI, delivers brand excellence and provides a revolutionary service centre experience.

Over the 5 day show, Dura had a wide range of potential new partners to stand from Spain, Poland and Qatar. In addition to this, we had a number of ‘catch up’ contact meetings with existing distributors from Norway, Japan, China, Sweden, Holland, the Czech Republic and the UK to discuss existing and future projects and changes to our existing range.

Aside from this, Dura’s experts spent a lot of time over the over the course of the show meeting with new clients and showing them around the variety of cabinets that we had on display. Our full setup of integrated workshop cabinets were very well received and gave visitors the perfect opportunity to compare how robust and versatile our system looked/felt compared with other European providers. It also provided us with the perfect opportunity to showcase the large depth of project examples that we have available and show customers the wealth of experience that we have in the industry.

Caps and Dura develop Harley Davidson Flagship

Caps-Workshops have developed a strong relationship with Harley-Davidson and have just finished working on the company’s EMEA flagship dealer in Reading.  With an ethos based on fulfilling dreams and providing extraordinary motorcycles and customer experiences, Harley- Davidson needed a dealership and aftersales workshop that symbolised their passion for freedom and exceeded their customer expectations.  As the new dealership is built upon the Harley-Davidson brand identity, Caps-Workshops followed a set of guidelines and workshop development solutions to create a complete turnkey solution for all Harley-Davidson dealers to aspire to.

The workshop needed to be functional whilst aesthetically pleasing.  With a cost of a Harley-Davidson ranging from £7k to over £24k a customer doesn’t want to see their bike in a dirty and messy workshop.   With this in mind the workshop features 5 bays plus a plant area for physical dirty work to be conducted.  The bays utilise a complete Dura run of black/grey cabinets including, wall units featuring glove and towel dispensers, double door base cabinets, low level oil distribution, 7 drawer tool cabinets as well as waste disposal and 4 tier mobile trolleys. The whole design is finished off with pure orange back panels to match the Harley-Davidson brand as well as a painted floor and iconic Harley-Davidson artwork.

As a customer centric dealership, Caps-Workshops worked with Harley-Davidson to incorporate a customer waiting lounge that features a workshop viewing area, free drinks and an original Harley Davidson juke box to select your favourite tune whilst you watch expertly trained technicians work on your pride and joy.

Protect your new MOT hardware with Dura

The government MOT modernisation project has meant that some garage owners have invested in new IT equipment and hardware.  Although the new system will increase efficiency and  allow technicians to enter the results whilst still in the test bay, it is important to protect the investments made in new IT hardware.

Computer diagnostic cabinets are the perfect solution to reduce the risk of damage in a busy workshop. THE DVSA records show that 50% of garages will be using desktop computers, 25% laptops and 13% tablets.  Dura’s computer cabinets work with any device and can be built into a combination bay alongside tool storage and fluid management systems.

Welcome to the world of Continova

As the original innovators of the integrated workshop system, Dura’s modular cabinetry and tool storage solutions can be found in most major cities and prestigious automotive workshops in Sweden. Due to the company’s long lasting relationship with their Swedish Distributor Continova AB, the technically advanced products are now the norm amongst professionals.

The relationship between Continova and Dura is perfectly balanced through a shared ethos of innovation, quality and superior service.  Whether you’re looking to renovate your existing workshop, or looking to install into a new construction, Continova and Dura have the expert knowledge and skills to work alongside you or your architect.

A recent project worked on by the duo was Hedin Bil, Angelholm.  The Hedin Bil Group has a total of 23 brands, due to its large product range the company are one of the largest automotive dealers in Sweden.

The group wanted to invest in a workshop that would increase cleanliness, health and safety and efficiency.  Choosing only supplies that have an environmentally friendly focus, Hedin Bil were pleased with Dura’s waste management systems, designed specifically for the Swedish market.  The system consists of four separate compartments that can be used by each technician to separate waste before its accurate disposal. As well as waste management the new Angelholm based workshop incorporated tool stations, a combination of high and low level storage cabinetry and slim line tool solutions for larger equipment.  With incorporated VDU’s technicians have the capacity to service and repair vehicles whilst completing administration, all in one compact footprint.

BMW have also looked to Continova and their relationship with Dura to install a new workshop in their Bavaria dealership.  As well as individual technician bays that feature built in tool storage, BMW has also built a rapid service area.  The area features a 2.7 metre run of cabinetry that provides the technician with efficient waste management, storage capability and a mobile tool station featuring castors that provide easy movement.

A key feature of the Dura range that has been installed in both the Hedin Bil and BMW workshops is their fluid management system.  The system minimises wastage, whilst improving inventory management that ultimately leads to increased profits. With all products design led a popular addition to tool storage cabinets is tool control foam, the foam is double layered and perfectly cut to the exact size needed. Providing an individual home for each tool has proven results of cutting down on lost or stolen equipment.

Continova consistently offer high standards to their customers through initial consultations, the provision of 3D visuals and a timely and professional installation.  As their reputation grows throughout the region we expect to see many more projects featuring the Dura range including Klasen Bil, a privately owned workshop that is currently under redevelopment.

The CV Show Prevails Again

The 14th – 16th April played host to the largest, most comprehensive road freight transport event in Britain, the CV Show.  Held at the NEC Birmingham, the event ensures a nationwide attendance and features focal points including the workshop area where Dura could be found on the green carpet that luckily matched our brand colours.

The CV Show provided the opportunity to showcase our design led solutions that are individually tailored to your business’s needs.  Our 5.7m wide display featured the Dura 900mm wide integrated fluid management system featuring Samoa reels for oil, air and water delivery.  The system also features quick release access panels as well as an oil monitoring keypad and optional extraction controls.  We presented everything required for modern commercial vehicle servicing including our tool cabinets and tool top boxes with laser cut control foam.  One customer appreciated the innovative design so much he purchased two of our tool cabinets straight from the stand at the end of the show.

Dura distributor Gemco were also in attendance with their biggest stand to date.  Featuring vehicle lifts, vehicle roller brake testers, Stenhoj and Dura’s workbenches with fitted vice as well as high and low level cabinetry.

We had a fantastic chat with the gents from Samoa.  Since 1987 the company have evolved to become one of the world’s leading manufacturers of lubrication equipment.  On top of this well respected reputation they even found time to brain storm ides with us for our Goodwood revival stand in September.

As well as showcasing their range of products some companies opted to use the show as a platform to launch their latest products.  Dura customer Pro Align debuted their Hunter commercial vehicle wheel alignment system.  The company and their systems help truck, bus and heavy vehicle fleet operators check their wheel alignment regularly and more easily than ever before, creating a reduction in fuel bills and emissions.

The CV Show is an ideal place to meet industry professionals including the CV Workshop magazine who throughout the year will continue to discuss the issues facing the commercial vehicle market.

Bringing Passion to life in Portsmouth

Tony Rhodes is embarking on a new project to create an inclusive cycling shop Drayton Cycles, near Portsmouth.  An avid racing cyclist since the age of 16, Tony had the privilege to ride and train with some of the country’s top professional cyclists Danny Horton, Keith Lambert, Paul Milnes and Dave Rayner to name but a few.  It was on these training rides that Tony’s passion for cycling evolved.  A Cytech trained mechanic with an engineering background, Tony is now ready to put his vast experience to good use through sharing his passion and knowledge.

Over the next three months Tony will be working closely with Dura to develop a professional, stylish and effective workshop in the new store. The workshop will feature an L shape run of Dura cabinets with precision tool storage, waste management systems as well as high and low level storage.  Along with a state of the art workshop, the new store will offer customers the chance to use their static trainer to establish the best fit for them and their bike. Tony is determined to be inclusive for everyone from seasoned pros to those just starting out with a family bike ride.

With coffee readily available conversation will be flowing creating a true community spirit at Drayton Cycles where you can share stories and tips. Opening in August and stocking a wide range for both male and female riders, this will be the go to cycle shop for all levels of riders.

Charles Hurst, the largest automotive park in Europe invest in bespoke Dura workshop

As a dealership whose mission it is to be an outstanding company who achieve customers for life, Northern Irelands leading motor group, Charles Hurst, have gone from strength to strength since first opening their doors in 1911. With headquarters based on a 20 acre plot in Belfast, the site is now the largest automotive park in Europe, and employs over 700 members of staff.

Charles Hurst Specialist Division provides the cars that everyone dreams of owning, including Ferrari, Bentley, Maserati, Lexus and Aston Martin. In mid-2014 the decision was made to refurbish an existing building within their Specialist Division.  This building was adjacent to the existing Ferrari, Maserati and Bentley workshop and was required to increase the capacity for the Ferrari, Maserati and Land Rover brands.

After a detailed tender process, including 3D renders and in-depth CAD designs, CCS Garage Equipment were awarded the contract.  Work began with the Charles Hurst maintenance team, to supply and install Dura workshop cabinets, and associated service integration.  Having worked with CCS previously, Charles Hurst were confident in the delivery of a high quality turnkey solution.

The excellent partnership between CCS and Dura allowed for the creation of a workshop scheme that fully integrates all elements of the installation, into one seamless design.

During the composition phase of the project, Dura cabinets were designed to specifically incorporate the housing of lift controls, fluids, compressed air, waste oil, oil monitoring and power.  As part of this integration both reels and a waste oil suction pump were integrated into one complete cabinet, which could be shared between 2 technicians.

As each technician used a tablet instead of a computer, back panel shelving was provided and for an unbroken finish, all isolator controls and electrics were integrated into the back panels.

CCS completed the project on the 23rd January, and the finished result is an aesthetically pleasing, functional, bespoke workshop.

When asked about the project, Group Maintenance Manager Bill Henry had this to say,

"This really was a great team effort by the Charles Hurst team, CCS and Dura.  Working closely together, the project was handled professionally and efficiently by all parties.  Everyone understood our specific requirements to make the workshop functional for 3 franchises, but at the same time creating a bespoke modern workshop.

The level of planning prior to the installation was particularly commendable, as the physical installation and integration of the cabinets, along with the vehicle lifts and services was completed on time, and without any interruption to the programme and handover.

The finished result speaks for itself."

93 Year Commitment

Founded in 1997 local organisation Dura are the original innovators of the fitted garage concept. The company design and manufacture integrated workshop and garage furniture for residential, automotive and commercial markets.  As Europe’s market leader within the automotive industry, well-known brands such as Aston Martin, Bugatti and Rolls Royce all recommend the high quality products within their workshop portfolios.

Having started as industrial designer Dominic Wishlade’ vision, Dura offers the complete service from design and planning through to bespoke tailor made solutions.  

As innovators and leaders in their industry, the company not only wants to inspire its customers but its staff as well.  Over its 17 year history Dura have experienced extensive growth, and now employs over 60 people between its Brackley based head office and state of the art factory based in Plymouth.  As well as the phenomenal team growth, the company have invested over £3 million in equipment and facilities for its 92,000 sq ft factory.

This month celebrates the 10 year anniversary of Evadne Pearce, the companies Accounts and Office Manager. The anniversary got the Dura team feeling nostalgic as they began to reminisce about each’ journey within the company.  Whilst recalling jovial memories, the Brackley based team calculated that between them they have generated over 93 years of service.  Many of the team started in junior positions across the Design, Admin, Accounts, Marketing and Project departments and have progressively moved up within the organisation.

In today’s business world it is a true testament of a company to have so many committed and loyal staff.  As well as holding high principals for their service levels, Dura hold a profound ethos when investing in their employee development.

The flexibility and dedication demonstrated by Dura to employee engagement and education is outstanding and truly appreciated by many of the staff. Debbie Tait has completed her CIPD foundation in HR through the company and is due to start two more modules shortly. Debbie stated “the learning has been invaluable and incredibly stimulating, it is rare to work for an organisation who are happy to allow you to develop your passion and change your role throughout your time with them” After a 13 year career break Debbie started her journey with Dura in administration and has since progressed through various departments including design and sales, and is now the companies HR Manager.

There are not many local companies that you can work for who have a small but integrated team and yet hold such a strong international presence.  With 40% of the company’s business in export, Dura employees have the opportunity to travel the world with one manager Stephen verging on 260,000 air miles. Although he claims it’s not as glamorous as everybody thinks, he often regales his stories of being wined and dined in exotic and far off places.

Industrial Design graduate Claude Berger has only been with the company for 3.5 years but has had already had the phenomenal opportunity to work with Volvo, designing bespoke products for their Finnish Corporate Identity.  

Lee Kidman is a fantastic example of the company’s passion towards its employees.  Lee began his Dura career as a junior designer, due to the small team back then you would often find him jumping on a forklift or doing the post run to help the company as a whole.  8 years later and Lee is now a UK Project Manager whose career highlight has been travelling to Kuwait to liaise with local contractors for one of Dura’s workshop installations.  Due this hard work and dedication Dura have rewarded Lee through providing him the opportunity to obtain three qualifications as well as promoting him numerous times.

Although Dura have an international customer base the company still focus on their local roots with many of their employees living in surrounding towns and villages.  The national and international award winning company keeps its team grounded through the charitable donations they provide from each year’s profits to the Helen and Douglas House, Oxfordshire. Established in 1982 as the world’s first children hospice Helen and Douglas House are a foundation close to the whole of Dura and 2015 will see the team volunteer more than any year to date.

After recently employing a PR and Marketing Executive, a CAD Designer and an Installer the company is continuing to grow and are constantly on the lookout for talented people who feel they have a part to play in the process.

World leading research and design centre redesign instrumental workshop

Working on behalf of a variety of large and small companies from across the world, PDR has been a pioneer of rapid prototyping, 3d printing and advanced manufacturing technologies for two decades. At their in-house workshop they have developed an enviable low volume production capability, allowing them to offer a truly remarkable range of services that ensures each of their customers are given all of the necessary information and product samples to successfully get their products to market.

With their unique approach continuing to gain prominence, PDR have successfully grown their services within the centre over the last 18 years, developing upon what is already an impressive collection of services to help household brands such as Bosch, Mothercare, Boots and a number of clients in the medical care industry to research and manufacture innovative new creations.

It’s this continuous growth and the addition of high accuracy 3D printing technology that prompted PDR into reviewing the structure and layout of their workshop facilities. With this need established the team at Dura were contacted to develop a room that would befit the PDR brand, both in terms of aesthetics and efficiency.  

After separate surveys of the facility, and the refinement of a selection of 2D and 3D visualisations, Dura set to work on constructing a workshop that would maximise the space available. Working to PDR’s precise requirements our team of expert designers developed a series of symmetrical work bays to create an individual work station for each technician. Within each work station we combined a series of 600mm wide tool cabinets, general storage cabinets, bridging units and electrical supply to create identical assembly areas. We then finished the full run in a single sheet of heavy-duty laminate to provide a stylish and durable work surface.

Within the centre of the workshop, PDR expressed the need to develop a separate breakout workstation that technicians could use to discuss projects and inspect final prototypes. To achieve the perfect solution for this, Dura again combined a selection of 600mm and 900mm wide tool cabinets and general storage cupboards to form a 2.1m x 600mm island. A hidden recycling bin was also incorporated to deal with waste in an ethical manner.  Once finished the system was once again completed with a single laminate worktop that spanned across each of the 6 units.

Finally, Dura installed a separate workbench with a vice attached, as well as a double door, 1200mm wide tall cabinet that provided adequate bulk storage. The whole of the workshop was then finished in a black-grey epoxy paint coating and a unique red pinstripe to lift the finished look of the project.

When asked about the fit out of the new workshop, Commercial Director Jarred Evans had this to say,

“During a tendering process Dura quickly emerged as favourites due to their commitment and enthusiasm for the project, attention to detail and extremely high design and build standards. This was confirmed when highly considered design solutions were presented and they became instrumental in providing advice and guidance to improve the layout, organisation and workflow of our operations. .

The fit out and build was painless and we now have a great looking workshop facility that really reflects the cutting edge technology and commitment to quality and turnaround we make with our customers.”

Global Aerospace Experts choose Bespoke Workshop Design

Since 1953, global supply chain experts Wesco Aircraft have been providing innovative management solutions to an ever growing aerospace industry. With more than 8500 customers worldwide, Wesco have developed a unique range of experience in delivering products and services that meet with the diverse demands of the civil, commercial and defence aerospace industries.

With an inventory of nearly 600,000 stock units including hardware, bearings, fluid fittings and electromechanical components, Wesco required a workshop that was organised and efficient and worked in perfectly with their established branding scheme. With this in mind Dura’s expert team of workshop designers set about creating a centre for Wesco that allow Wesco to streamline their services and increase productivity.

As the layout of the quality assurance centre was to be based around a precise ‘U-Shaped’ room, Dura started by assigning the perfect combination of cabinets into the internal dimensions of the room. As Wesco required a mixture of well-proportioned tool storage cabinets and bulk storage cabinets (both low and high level), Dura developed a corner return solution of cabinets that made perfect use of the space available.

Because Wesco manage a number of small components we then developed a separate workspace for a designated technician where each supply shipment could be monitored.

For the final area of the workshop we had to create a bespoke section that allowed for a number of unique considerations. This included a high level solution of heavy-duty shelving and a custom built selection of tambour door units to create easy access high level and low level storage.

To ensure the whole of the workshop was in-keeping with Wesco’s corporate identity, we then finished the workshop in a bespoke grey and blue colour-scheme and finished the wall units with expertly cut decals.

The end result was a workshop that was beautifully tailored to Wesco’s bespoke requirements and provided their experienced team with an efficiently organised and perfectly styled work bay

Both Cranc and Jungle Products have showcased Dura’s technological innovations ideally suited to the cycling enthusiast’s intrinsic needs.  

Working with these two companies, has provided Dura the privilege of bringing their cutting edge and functional designs to the forefront of the cycling industry.   By creating workshops that combined exquisite quality and impeccable designs, both Jungle and Cranc were able to showcase iconic brands such as Santa Cruz, Juliana, Issac and BOS.

As Europe’s leading garage interior and workshop systems providers, UK based Dura have recently worked on bringing the cyclists garage workshop into the home market. Working with several cycling enthusiasts across the UK who enjoy the freedom they feel and the heritage of their beloved country that they see while on a cycling journey.  Dura helped to enhance what is often a forgotten space in the home by creating a collection of stunning cycling themed garages.

Independent Porsche Specialist Goes Above and Beyond

Precision Porsche are soon becoming the favourite independent in the south. Located in the heart of mid Sussex, the company offers every service imaginable from maintenance and engine rebuilds, to full restoration.  Owned by Porsche enthusiast Jonny Harle, Precision Porsche use genuine Porsche parts ensuring your warranty always remains intact.

From the classic 356, and 911, to Boxsters, Cayman and Cayenne, the company use the latest Porsche diagnostic equipment within their state of the art facilities. As the highest quality Independent Porsche specialist in the UK, Jonny Harle came to Dura to create a workshop, engine rebuild/renovation as well as, unit repair areas that would set his business above and beyond all other independents in the market.

Jonny’s innovative vision, was to design a variation on the Porsche UK Head Quarters.  This theme would not only provide him and his team a fantastic environment in which to work, but would also have the capability of everything they need, in a visually impacting, clean line workshop.  The design would allow functionality and storage for the plethora of modern, classic and exotic Porsches that Precision Porsche attract as their day to day business.

As an independent owner who values his team, and appreciates the work they conduct, Jonny wanted to provide his technicians with ample storage for tools and general items. Dura’s many drawer and storage options with flexible configurations made this possible and a preferred layout was agreed upon.

Through the Use of CAD design, Dura ensured the bay layout was identically replicated in every work bay whilst being remaining spatially aware.

Jonny was very hands on throughout the whole project, one of his most precise requirements was for an engine room.  In order to ensure the precision of his design, Jonny visited the Dura offices where a direct consultation with Dura’s design team was under taken.  Together they sat at the CAD computer, and ensured the space was catered for, exactly how Jonny had envisioned it.  Along with Dura products, Jonny planned on incorporating his own gearbox and engine mounting brackets.

Once the entire installation was complete the real decision came… what colour?  To achieve his goal of standing out from the rest, Jonny wanted a real wow factor for customers entering the workshop.  Dura looked at every option and their graphic designer presented over 10 colour combination options.  The combinations had been formulated around the idea of incorporating Porsche’s Acid Green of the Hybrid brake callipers, similar to that at Porsche UK Head Quarters.

Dura silver, their very own special mix of a luxurious silver powder coating along with Porsche green back panels, and the unmistakable Porsche logo, makes anyone’s visit to see the Precision Porsche team a memorable one.
