Why dis? Why me?
Dagur was just too excited to respond to Hiccup’s question. Dagur half-expected that Hiccup died in the kill ring after he told Dagur to flee. He was sure that Hiccup had the funeral of a true Viking— a warrior.
But here Hiccup is, alive and well— Oh, it was more than a relief to see Hiccup again. He survived that Dragon attack, and he’s here! he fought off—
“— a Night Fury!”
Laughter bubbled up from Dagur’s chest, the sound so relieved and so jittery and so genuine. He can still only imagine how Hiccup managed to win against such a beast. Dagur’s eyes were filled with wonder and admiration towards his Hooligan brother.
“You fought off a Night Fury!”
Hiccup hadn't thought very much about that day -- he didn't want to. He wanted to move on, to forget about Dagur until absolutely necessary, and hope his lie s t u c k. Of course, if things worked out exactly the way Hiccup wanted them to, the gods would miss out on the entertainment their little punching bag brought them. "A... right, the Night Fury." Hiccup rubbed at the back of his neck, almost missing the look his, er, brother was wearing. It seemed that Hiccup's lie had somehow convinced Dagur that the young runt was more than just that. "So, uhh, what are you doing on Dragon Island, Dagur?" Hiccup asked again, a little more insistently. "You, ah, never did say..." He wanted to keep the conversation off of himself as long as possible, if only to prolong his little lie until he came up with a proper plan.
“Was I always this honest? I mean— thanks for the potential ego-booster there, but it certainly doesn’t take away from the weird aspect! And how exactly were you going to approach this?”
He couldn’t help but be curious in his own demented way. The execution was subtle and well, honest. There was a carnal interest floating here and it was for the lack of a better word: intriguing.
”’…Was it going to be a small thing or—or a bigger thing?”
"Well -- I mean, you're me, so I kinda figured it would be sorta, uhh, natural? At least, moreso than it would be with others..." He seemed to be wearing down his older self which was... what he'd wanted, after all, but now that it was actually within his grasp, Hiccup wasn't entirely certain what he'd been planning. It was just curiosity. "Well, I mean, I was gonna sorta just go along with whatever you had in mind?"

Dragon Hunting. The most demanding of pass times, if Dagur did say so himself.
The stealth. The adrenaline. The thrill. So much of your attention is required to stay alive. So much soul is put into this art. It’s hard to think one wouldn’t enjoy this artistic sport.
Dagur was just returning to his camp from a marking expedition, when he heard an indistinct voice ahead of him. In his campsite. An intruder.
Without thinking, Dagur broke into a stealthy run, his boots making no noise with practiced ease. The intruder was against the light of Dagur’s fire, making him a simple black shape. The Beserker chief pounced, throwing his weight onto the intruder, forcing him down onto the earth beneath them.
Dagur paused, waiting for the intruder to react to being thrown to the ground, but when he instead heard a familiar voice, Dagur opened his eyes in surprise.
” —— Hiccup?” Dagur couldn’t believe it. Dagur pushed himself up and pulled Hiccup along with him in one quick motion. Dagur pulled Hiccup into a tight hug, too ecstatic to care that he’s nuzzling the other.
“My brother, you’re alive! Ohohohoho — “ He pulled hiccup away from the hug, holding him out and up at arm’s length. Brother’s alive! Ohhh, this is amazing!
The weight on top of him was disturbingly familiar. This was a dynamic he knew, one he'd been on the lower rung of one too many times before. He registered the weight before he realized who it belonged to, and a gnawing, sinking feeling had started picking away at Hiccup's stomach. This encounter was unexpected to say the least. He hadn't expected to see the Berserker chief again until the next treaty signing -- or perhaps he had simply hoped. But there was something about the way Dagur addressed him, the way he tossed him around, that told Hiccup this meeting was fate, and that they would have encountered one another before their next arranged meeting regardless. Whether it was the gods toying with Hiccup or Dagur taking fate into his own hands he was unsure, but either way, he was here now and ---- Wait a second. That -- Something was off here. In all the years they had known each other, Dagur had never been this... affectionate with Hiccup before. The hug was strange enough on its own, but with the addition of the nuzzle and -- "Brother?" The title felt out of place. Given what Hiccup knew, it seemed far too familiar for the relationship the two teens actually held. Not to mention that, knowing Dagur, the title of brother could mean something much different than what Hiccup expected. "I -- well, if I wasn't alive, I wouldn't be talking to you right now... uhh. What are you doing here?" Hiccup blinked a couple times, legs dangling just off the ground, snark winning over sense in the haze of his shock. Maybe this mission would provide him with a bit of a challenge after all, though not one he had been expecting at all...

This mission was proving to be almost too easy. Perhaps it had been nothing but good fortune so far, but he liked to think his skill had something to do with it as well. Still, he had been navigating the island with ease and -- "Are you - campfire? How is this stealthy?" Somebody was slacking. Somebody had decided this mission wasn't easy enough, and Hiccup had an idea who it was. Making his way through the brush and towards the smokey camp, Hiccup kept an eye out for telltale movements. "Okay, come on out. Show yourself, Snotlout, and I will go easy on you." The words had hardly escaped his mouth before Hiccup found himself on the ground. This was not Snotlout's campsite. " ---- Dagur?"

”You’re telling me there’s a dragon in that box?"
Staring at the other guy for a few moments his eyes wandered over to the box. Flitting back and forth for a few moments he squinted at him.
“Are you being serious?”
"Dragon egg, actually. separated from the nest. It's in the box for easy transport." This wasn't the first egg they'd found away from its nest - there was something scattering them, and Hiccup was going to find out what. Their first priority, however, was getting the eggs back to their mothers. "So, uhh, still wanna take your chances?"
“But I’m getting paid to move it—— But it does look weird.
Money though.
What’s the worst that could happen?”
"Well, the possibility of an angry, firebreathing dragon unleashing its fury comes to mind. But that's just a possibility. I'll leave it up to you if you think it's worth the risk."

He would never get used to this. Handling neighbouring chiefs was one thing, but royalty was -- well. A different story. "It's an honour to welcome you to Berk." Hiccup kept it formal, biting back any number of snarky remarks dancing on his tongue.

He'd never seen anything like it. Lurking in the trees, Hiccup stared at the stranger to Berk, hoping to simply observe. ---- which would have been a much simpler task if his prosthetic hadn't chosen that exact moment to catch on a rock as he adjusted his position, sending him tumbling forward. "Oops."

"I would, uhh, stay away from that if I were you."
“I'll just minimize it to: it’s you. It’s beyond me how you accept this so easily.”
Still it was awkward to him. Getting closer? Letting him practice? He had no idea if he’d simply embarrass himself or something else—
”'For science'? That’s such an excuse! Although it’s reassuring to know you find it appealing to kiss me.
Do I take that as a compliment?”
"Well, I mean, I'm not so sure I'd call it accepting. More like... curiosity." He couldn't help but chuckle, perhaps a bit nervously, as he looked over, well, himself. He'd always been naturally curious, and this was a, uh, unique opportunity, so why not embrace it? "I'd say so. I mean, uhh... How do I say this without it sounding weird? I kinda matured pretty well, if I do say so myself..."
“Oh. Okay.”

"Shit."
“You know it, bro.
Wanna make out?”
"Not particularly..."
“Nice bum, where ya from?”
"You're not so bad yourself."
