What exactly was “freedom”? To someone who had been imprisoned but hadn’t known otherwise, the word “freedom” and “free” held no meaning whatsoever. By everyone else’s definition she had not been free; she was born into captivity and subjected to experiments that sometimes rode the line of torture. How could she then be expected to comprehend the idea of freedom and imprisonment when she was finally able to leave?
The first thing she noticed was the night sky. The cold night air bit and stung at her aggressively as she only wore a thin white night gown; however, the dark sky with its twinkling solar system of lights were so captivating that she hardly noticed. A sound was the only thing that pulled her from her r e v e r i e---a twig being snapped and fresh snow being disturbed. This was the first time she had ever seen snow let alone been outside but the sound and the very presence near her made her very alert. More than one...there was more than one around her.
Wolves nearly twice her size (she was at this point in time 10 years old) strode out from the shadows of the nearby thickets, surrounding her easily. At first she was fascinated by the creatures and their beauty...but the smaller the circle around her got, the more uneasy she felt in the pit of her stomach. Something primal in her knew there was danger but her brain could not comprehend why exactly. The wolves snapped at her, growling with their ears pressed back while the largest one simply stared at her. The wolf on its right side left forward to bite her shoulder.
Unpleasant. Blood. She had seen blood plenty of times before--even her own blood---but this time it felt different. There was an intent to kill or eat, and she could feel it deep within her body when the creature bit into her shoulder. The others followed suit, save for the largest, and they bit into her, pushing her body down and shaking their heads violently to rip the flesh from her body. What was that sound that escaped her?
It was a scream. For the first time in her life she screamed and was afraid.
