In this shot from "The Power of the Dog," director Jane Campion uses framing and lighting to emphasize the tension between Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee). The dark interior of the barn contrasts with the bright, open landscape outside, representing the inner turmoil and repression within Phil's character. The silhouettes add to the sense of mystery and emotional distance between the two men while also hinting at an unspoken connection. The barn serves as a space where Phil can express his hidden desires and becomes a stage for the evolving dynamic between them. The wide-open view of the mountains, with the "dog" shape in the hills that both now see, symbolizes a shift in their relationship and suggests a shared understanding of the hidden aspects of their identities.
