george kirk will always feel guilty and like a failure to his kids and wife. even if the circumstances were out of his control. doesn’t matter what someone says to him, he’ll always have regret, guilt, and failure locked away in his mind.

“Well I’m still waiting back on a lot of those tests I ran, but since you check out enough to drink how about you and I have a glass.” He finished pouring them both a glass. “So I’m told that I have you to thank for Jim’s apparently inherited borderline reckless heroism.” he was teasing of course, trying to find a way to make conversation with the guy.
the former captain doesn’t move for a moment, eying the glass. but he takes it eventually, sipping. god, he hates hospitals and doctors. not bones, specifically, but doctors in general. but he hasn’t lost his sense of humor or emotions so george gives a wry smile. “that’s what i hear.” shoulders shrug. “i’m sure it’s a mixture of winona and i, both. me, reckless, win, stubborn.” the man lets out a soft chuckle before downing the rest of his drink. no shame. “thank you, though. for helping jim, and...and me.”

“i can’t do this right now, jim. i can’t. i’m sorry.”
Feet shuffle, gaze, downwards. George is nerves because everything is still new. He knows he's asking a lot, a sense of normalcy. So if the answer is no, he'll understand. But he'd hate himself if he didn't ask. "Jim." He begins, hesitating before finding resolve. "I know life must be vastly different but I wanted to know if we could spend Thanksgiving together. You, me and Spock." He want's to say more, but short and sweet is better. George waits, hopeful.
“ george! ” he greets, searching the subtle twist of anxiety in the man’s face with a furrow of his eyebrows. the question, likely rehearsed on repeat, catches him unguarded just outside his quarters at the end of his shift, where george was waiting for him. a defensive glance cast over his shoulder reveals they are indeed alone, cause well, he and spock, they’re not exactly— public.he fills himself up with a deep breath, meant to expel the weird surge of embarrassment that slaps him like a wet towel.
thanksgiving: it’s not like he hadn’t thought about it, and what george’s return might mean as far as social expectations. he can’t even remember the last time he’d been around family for the holidays. sixteen? seventeen? must have been seventeen, when winona had accumulated enough shoreleave to all but require her compliance in returning to earth.
“ i don’know, i mean. got straight to the point huh? spock doesn’t exactly observe terran holidays, you know? i’d have to run it by him. make sure it’s not— odd? i guess? ” he pushes his tongue against the inside of his bottom lip. takes one long look at george’s face, and gives him this. jim’d been hard on him. maybe they both need it. a sigh— and a genuine smile, soft as it was.
“ but— that sounds nice, dad, we can do it right. turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberries and apple pie. we can uh, even watch the game. i’lll ask him, alright? ” he doesn’t bust out the old parental moniker very often, but now felt right.

“i feel that no matter what i do, it will never be good enough. i’m already seen as a failure despite having saved 800 lives.”
@starshipxcaptain / starter call .
the words are on his tongue before he’s even had a moment to think about the situation they’ve found himself in. though he may have been absent, thought to be dead, that paternal instinct still strives with an iron fist inside george. orbs are frantic as he looks over to jim. the only word that he can manage to say is “JIM!” voice strained, and desperate as he struggles to work free.

“i’m not sure i understand what it is you’re saying.” brow pinches, confusion clear in the man’s eyes. they reflect a similar expression his son has been known to make.
@thefleetsfinest / starter call.
george feels as if he’s caught between a rock and a hard place. he doesn’t have answers and so many people have questions. he looks at the man his son calls friend, with a pleading expression. he doesn’t know what he expects bones to do, but if the man is good enough for his son, perhaps the good doctor can help george as well.
george misses his family....

“this wasn’t how i intended this meeting to go.” george offered a small and lopsided grin. but at least they were meeting.
