heatstrvkesâ:
michaela pulled back slightly, an almost inaudible scoff leaving her throat at the assertion- though, laurel wasnât completely wrong, which is why she wouldnât argue too much, âlaurel, i didnât- look, i wasnât able to properly and fully express myself over that medium. i need to talk to you about it.â so, she led the way into laurelâs room herself, turning to face her once she was through the door, âiâm good with words. with conversation and making a good argument. and i sort of had words planned, but i also want to give you the opportunity to talk about what happened.â she was aware of just how much she was trying to run this conversation like a hearing. it was instinct. itâs how she knew how to take on problems. law was a language she spoke fluently- admitting feelings was not. michaela had many compelling arguments for why she and the other woman should be together, she only hoped that laurel could see her logic, âi know what i said sounded like a rejection.â she nodded once, âbut it wasnât. i promise you it wasnât.â she felt incredibly vulnerable standing in front of the latina like this. michaela and laurel never acknowledged their tryst or the non-platonic tension that had existed between them since. they had moved from enemies to reluctant partners in crime to real friends- best friends, even. and now, michaela was willing to risk everything they had built- their friendship, their group, her own relationship with laurelâs son- to be with her. actually be with her. she could only hope that the other felt even a semblance of what she felt, that she desired something even remotely close to what michaela wanted with her.Â
following wesâ passing, laurel had come to the conclusion she was one of the few people who couldnât obtain pure and unadulterated happiness. unlike oliver and connor, she didnât have the privilege of falling head over heels with someone and openly dating them, let alone marrying the person she was in love with. it wasnât her choice. none of it ever was. unfortunately, everyone sheâd gotten close to somehow ended up with a target on their back subsequent to their nearing expiration date. if she wasnât careful, it wouldnât be long before her father had done the same to michaela by sending xavier to do his bidding or one of the many henchmen on his lengthly and practically endless payroll. knowing the castillo patriarch, he would stop at nothing to get what he wanted by punishing his only daughter, as proven by his attempt to take her son away from her through the legal courts all the while painting her out to be an unfit mother. not to mention, laurelâs brother had been responsible for nate lahey seniorâs death as a way to get back at annalise, due to laurelâs alliance with the older woman. taking into account all those factors, what was to stop him from getting back at her by hurting michaela? she couldnât stomach the thought of her best friendâs life coming to a tragic end, all because she had been wrapped up in who and what she wanted: both answers being michaela. maybe it wasnât the response she wanted or even deserved, but it was the response that would keep her safe and alive. âi canât give you anything else apart from a casual hook-up, michaela. not after what happened to wes. i wonât be the reason for another death, least of all yours,â she divulged in a faint timbre, unable to meet the other femaleâs eyes as she spoke.Â
