     ❛ ━━ you’re...the guy from the prison outbreak. ❜ not the best of memories, or the best of meetups. it was VIOLENCE, and POWER PLAY. billy met old friends who had it out for his head. lucky none of them got close enough.

     he hesitates, hopes his hero getup puts him less on edge and more on defense; he’s still picking out who’s good, and who’s GASLIGHTING. he trusts the backup that he doesn’t have, so he’s trying to be safe, when he’s solo. he can’t ask kate to be his rooftop sniper every other afternoon, or teddy to play his pair. and he’s sort of promised everybody ( pretty much everybody ) that he won’t be stupid irresponsible irrational for a while. so his routine city rounds are leashed.

“gabby has a code name?” kate blinks at billy and makes a mental note to hire him asap when she isn’t broke. maybe in twenty years. then she remembers. “oh yeah, that’s right, she does. i don’t know, she looked pretty young to me. made me feel old.” kate shrugs her shoulders and makes a face at billy. “ew, maybe we are old.” she laughs and points at his glass. “okay, not you.”

     poor him. ❛ should we start thinking up new team names? ❜ he grins, but he’s pretty STUBBORN about that ‘ young avengers ’ gimmick. ❛ young adult avengers? next gen avengers? ❜ he sips his drink through a smile. maybe he clings too much, hates to think kate is just hawkeye and that he’s just wiccan. their team is all splinters by this point━ or they were, before this dome. another thing he should maybe thank kang for, bringing back the band.

grinning, zatanna sets her empty glass on the counter and casts a quick spell. “— llifer.” as soon as the words leave her mouth, the glass fills itself with champagne. she shrugs her shoulders and raises a playful eyebrow at the other person. “yes, i’m the laziest person i know.”

     he could probably do the same thing ( but he’s pretty sure he doesn’t need someone calling home to say magic influences underage drinking ). with a little practice, and something longer to say than her spell tag. she’s one of the new people that billy can’t name near enough on INSTINCT, from years of childhood heart-eyes at everyone in a cape. there’s a little smile at the corner of his lips, looking from the glass to her grin━━ ❛ you know magic too? ❜

KATE sips her champagne and slings her free arm around billy’s shoulder. it had been a while since the last time the archer had seen so many heroes in one room. a thoughtful look appears on her face. “hey, did you know that laura kinney has a baby sister? i’ve met her, she’s a really cool girl. ”

     billy’s more the sidelines sort of party guest. the barista must have pitied him, made his coke glass look pretty where everyone else held champagne. the lemon wedge totally says ‘ party guy ’. he leans into kate’s side, at ease in the crowd; it’s all her fault. ❛ are you talking about HONEY BADGER? ❜ he knows more from her wiki page than he does from her. ❛ isn’t she a teenager now? ❜

maybe loki had underestimated how much billy kaplan loathed him. suddenly, the god of mischief wasn’t hungry anymore. he poked his bacon with his fork and cleared his throat. “so, how have you been?” he asked before putting on his best fake smile. “a little bird told me that you used to be friends with kang.” 

     billy has a KNACK for bad-luck; it starts early today with breakfast. old con traitor breakfast, with a side of pancakes ( because it’s just like old times ). he hasn’t even touched his pancakes. the mood is bitter, like somebody else’s coffee. ❛ oh yeah, great, you know, just trying not to break the fabric of reality every time i breathe ❜. he’s going ALL IN before lunch, with a dour face and dour tone. ❛ he was IRON LAD before that. he was one of the team━ he didn’t want to end up like that. ❜

     somebody outside their friend circle might think billy’s just HEAD OVER HEELS. that normal, teenage idea where a girl never looks at him back. they wouldn’t figure billy’s just trying to remember what cassie’s face looks like, or pick out something wrong when she smiles or moves about his bedroom. analytical, half convinced she isn’t real. OVERWHELMINGLY stubborn that she must be. guilty why she shouldn’t. guilty why she IS. he’s a mess inside, over all of her. but for less than typical teen boy reasons.

     he catches himself mirroring her furrowed brow, or her optimism. he’s so glad she seems to be breathing, and saying something or other. ❛ ━huh? what? ❜ he’s mostly distracted by her tone of voice, and how she’s HERE, somehow. part of him feels like a selfish miracle worker. if such a thing can even exist. ❛ sorry, just...thinking about something. ❜ he doesn’t think hearing all the apologies he’d sobbed into her shoulder would be appreciated twice.

KATE knows how much nate meant to billy. hell, they probably wouldn’t be here without nathaniel richards and his good intentions. “he could erase any of us from existance. he erased YOU and teddy from existence, remember?” 

the sad look on billy’s face makes kate sigh and she shakes her head him. “as the unofficial team leader of the young avengers, i’m going to say no. we are not going to try to save him. we are going to PUNCH him.“

     some BITTER part of him says ‘ so could i ’. but that stays stuck in his mouth, trying to keep another problem from bubbling over into their lighthearted coffee conversation. it’s been YEARS, but for a while, billy’s last memento of nate had been a fist to the jaw, and his best friends tears. somehow, even though he didn’t EXIST afterwards, he feels guilt weigh down his stomach. for once in his life, he’s gone off cola.

     ❛ we sort of need him to show up first... ❜ he doesn’t know if kang is playing puppets with all of them; if he knows he’s got old friends playing back and forth with empathy and violence. billy looks huffy over it all, like the spoiled kid told ‘ no ’. it seems more like a tommy expression, only he’s the one preaching peace over punching.
