It was like there was an invisible net I was never going to slip through. While we were shooting, it hit home for me: I am acting this, but there are people out there who are going through this [suffering] every day.

When I was 18, I finally let myself buy a designer piece. I bought a pair of Louboutins, because thatâs what you do when youâre 18. They were so high. I was so in love with them. I wore them so much that the bottoms nowâtheyâre rough. Theyâre like a map of where I walked when I was 18.

I wrote this book called I Am Bigger Than My Anxiety that I still have: I drew a little green monster on my shoulder that speaks to me in my ear and tells me all these things that arenât true. And every time I listen to it, it grows bigger. If I listen to it enough, it crushes me. But if I turn my head and keep doing what Iâm doing â let it speak to me, but donât give it the credit it needs â then it shrinks down and fades away.
Iâve learned over the years that freedom is just the other side of discipline.
When I got the audition, the thing I was most excited about was that they were making Veronica Latina. In the beginning, my agent and I saw the breakdown and before they had even announced that they were looking for someone multicultural, my agent said, âOh, you know they are probably going to cast a Krysten Ritter type.â A white pin-up-looking girl. I was like, âYeah, youâre right!â So I disregarded it. But I was still really excited about the pilot. I was like, âUgh! I wish I could audition for that.â And then I meet with one of my girlfriends and she is super Latina and she is, like, going out for Veronica and she was like, âTheyâre making her Latina!â I was like, âOh, my gosh!â So I call my agent immediately and I was like, âYou need to get me in that room!â She told me, âDonât worry, weâre on it.â

âLook, Iâm in a business where youâve got to sell tickets. But, my God, I would not be able to look at myself in the mirror if I felt strongly about something and I didnât speak up. I think itâs about how you speak up. Weâre allowed to disagree. If I state my case and people donât want to go see my movies as a result, Iâm okay with that.â â Chris Evans for Esquire (April 2017)
