Vessels, Recent works by Paul Halley & Darius Stein Saturday, October 25th, 2014 @ 8:00pm with performance at 9:00pm
Dynamo Arts Association Suite 103 - 30 East 6th Ave, Vancouver, British Columbia V5T 1J4

The word “vessels” offers an array of different meanings and connotations. Some of the most common refer to an object used as a container, a craft designed for water transportation, or the more literary translation which describes a person who embodies a particular quality or use for a particular purpose. In Vessels, Paul Halley and Darius Stein explore notions of vessel through various media. The inherent connecting thread between their bodies of work begins to unfold with a closer examination of vessels as containment, as protection, as transport, and as labour. Paul presents a series of carved wooden forms whose surfaces have been worked meticulously over time. He then juxtaposes each of his forms with a distinctly foreign matter such as latex, sand, or metallic nails. The infusion of foreign matter acts like a protective membrane for its wooden counterpart. Some of Paul’s sculptures stand upright freely while others succumb to gravity and reach outwardly on the surface of the floor. Darius offers a multitude of forms and media chronicling the permutations of a hand-tended, manicured grass lawn in the shape of his 11 x 7 ft. fourth floor balcony. He exhibits multiple objects that recount the stages of the lawn’s care, its journey through False Creek and its inevitable decay: a grass lawn, a raft constructed for the transportation of his lawn (complete with short picket fence), a video performance embedded within the floor of his raft following the safe transport of the lawn from its origin on his balcony to a vacant lot under the Burrard Bridge, and lastly, a few small-scale watercolors situated on the wall documenting the journey of his lawn. Darius Stein and Paul Halley are both based in Vancouver.

Drawings by Colin Mclaine Music by Shed
just lines is a visual art installation, accompanied by live music. Raga-inspired improvisations are interspersed with songs, with synth by Andrew Short, guitar, drums and vocals by Colin Mclaine. The drawings in just lines use simple materials - sharpies and newsprint - to transmit a physical impulse. Via movement, repetition and connection to wave forms, Mclaine creates a room-sized recording of the moment.

OPENING RECEPTION / Fri May 9 8pm-11pm EXHIBITION RUNS / May 10-23, 2014 GALLERY HOURS / Sat-Sun 12pm-5pm or by appt. “Unsubstantiated claims of bizarre behavior that are difficult to prove or disprove” - Kenneth V Lanning, Special Agent for the FBI Behavioral Science Unit (1992) Intense feelings erupted all over North America in the early 1980s that continued well into the late 1990s over an issue that was said to threaten the very social order of modern society. It was believed that over centuries, Satanists had organized complex societies all over the world and had been performing Satanic Ritual Abuse (SRA) on unsuspecting victims regularly. The initial investigations into SRA were conducted by anthropologists and sociologists, who failed to find evidence of SRA actually occurring; instead they concluded that SRA was a result of rumors and folk legends that were spread by “media hype, Christian fundamentalism, mental health and law enforcement professionals and child abuse advocates” (The Dilemma of Ritual Abuse: Cautions and Guides for Therapists. Fraser, GA - 1997). Nonetheless Satanic Ritual Abuse became a moral panic that seemed to distort normal childhood fears and fantasies into a so-called crime epidemic that was never able to produce evidence of criminal activity. By tempting our initial sense of wonderment into a familiar state of delusion a person can feel more comfortable accepting a fantastic series of baffling events. Using bizarre and unusual imagery to visually suggest an eccentric world that seems to suggest a larger mystery Satanic Panic is a mass hallucination of emotional recognition. Placing importance on what could be real each image presents an innocent form of stimulation luring the viewer into a fantasy that will arouse a childish sense of wonder. BIO: As part of an ongoing examination of her surroundings, Sylvana's photography seeks out new experiences and individuals in the search for something meaningful and then exploits that moment through documentation and presentation. Her work focuses on the connections these moments have with the subject, their surroundings and the unifying effect of shared experiences. http://www.sylvanaisthebest.com/ http://5atanicpanic.tumblr.com/
Ahbyah Baker Recent Works April 26th – May 5th Reception *Saturday*, April 26th, 8PM Dynamo Arts Association is pleased to present Ahbyah Baker's Recent Works. In 2012, Baker was selected as a finalist for the RBC Painting Competition for her painting Dripshape25. This painting along with those previously exhibited at Or Gallery, Shudder Gallery and CSA Space is part of a continuum, showing Baker to be a dedicated, prolific painter with a rapidly expanding body of work. Baker employs an extensive process-based approach to painting. Through decisive layering, dripping, and removal of paint, she creates loose geometric forms that play with degrees of perceived surface tension. These forms possess a phantasmal quality, levitating off of or sinking deep into their minimalist grounds. Aspirations of vraisemblance are invoked and a romantic notion that one can find a truism within the act of painting; where a process can be utilized so it is the paint, that comes to dictate the artists hand. Baker states:“I think of my paintings as objects of discovery; discovery being in the process of making and in the process of viewing. I work within a mutable set of minimal parameters where I explore painterly elements such as form, colour, line and composition in a series of innumerable recombinations. The elements I work with are muted and discrete in their character, devoid of projecting any descriptive or explanatory appearances. In viewing these works I hope one sees what is experienced in he making of them. A process which manifested something of an abstract nature, something intangible and indescribable.” Ahbyah Baker's studio practice is based out of Vancouver. In 2006 she received her BFA from Emily Carr University. Exhibition Continues April 26th – May 5th - open on Saturdays/Sundays 12pm - 6pm or by appointment: [email protected] Dynamo Arts Association Suite 103 - 30 East 6th Ave Vancouver, British Columbia V5T 1J4
