my university is quite ass at many things sometimes but it is beautiful
"The four hounds we "rescued" from the Overseers are making great progress. I am confident that with continued care and proper feeding the training that they received at the hands of the zealots will fade and they'll begin to behave more to our liking."

refusal to participate due to self consciousness is actually more embarrassing than participating. it took me a very long time to figure that out. abject fear of embarrassment is actually causing you to do things that are more embarrassing than what you fear. you are gonna be embarrassed anyway. let go and be free
alien: resurrection is just so juicy because it has such obscenely good concepts and in some cases shockingly good execution but it is broadly constrained by being an alien movie and therefore all of those good concepts get sidelined by the fact that it is an alien movie and therefore aliens must be center stage for the runtime, which essentially means the movie is ass.
for example, the obvious transhumanist parallels of call and ripley and how they are subsequently fascinated with one another for all of their 30 minutes of shared screentime.
or the concept of waking up to learn that you have an alien in your chest and your body has been violated (stolen and sold as an incubator) while you were perfectly vulnerable (rape allegory) and your only lifeline is a group including some of the people who sold you. the people to whom which your body is a commodity. (also you are extremely attractive) this is given like 8 minutes of time in the film.
or the dynamic between ripley and the baby. it really is a baby. it doesn't know what it is and it doesn't know it's wrong and monstrous and it wants its mama. and she does care for it! at the same time it's a danger to those around it and ultimately ripley kills it (euthanizes?) could it have thrived? was it even biologically sound? who knows. i do know they made me feel extremely bad for it when it died in the movie. which is one of those sparse moments of blindingly good execution.
then there's less weighty concepts like guy with guns in his hands that rock and then there's like a 15 minute long underwater chase scene and you just have to lean back and accept that the movie is ass.
beautiful doomed man
