Part of why Carry On by Rainbow Rowell is so dear to me is Simon and Pennys friendship. They are each others family in every way. At no point does it feel like they are second to the other ones partner.
They're relationship is what I wanted in a queerplatonic relationship before I even knew what a queerplatonic relationship is. When Penny thinks about stealing Simon away so that they'd make it out of the war her fantasies are simply "I'd read and write, he'd sleep and eat". This sentence has burned itself into my head. This kind of simple domesticity. Nothing exciting, no grand adventures, just coexisting while doing things one enjoys is what I crave. It's funny, for a few years I didn't even realise that this sentence even came from Carry On. I was so bamboozeled when I reread it and realised.
