Not gonna lie: my love affair with coffee began with the instant kind. 3-in-1 Nescafe or San Miguel packets that one better-informed college schoolmate would scoff at. "Urgh I only drink brewed coffee." #pompous I'd think to myself (except it wasn't a hashtag because they weren't quite commonplace yet). Then I had to write my thesis and I graduated to drinking only tall black Americanos from Starbucks (uh huh shoutout to Katips). Then when I found myself in Spain with no money, my diet consisted of bread and a freshly brewed cup a day. When I moved to Singapore, I fell in love with cappuccinos. That's how I met my friend Madi @apostrophecoffee aka SG's first @bicyclebarista. T'was a new office along Circular Road (2013/2014?) and I needed my capp (or on bad days my mocha), which led me to quietly stumbling upon my favourite hole in the wall @spiffydapper (hey George). "Instant" things have their place in this world, but it definitely doesn't taste as good as a cup of joe that took its time. The college buddy might have been pompous for saying what he said, but coffee, in all its complexity, and real friends like this guy, could never ever be that. At the heart of most families is a man or woman fighting odds to ensure his or her family's survival. My grandmother was born in 1929 and lived through the Japanese occupation in the Philippines. She was one of the first overseas foreign workers in my family and braved many atypical situations for her generation. I am incredibly proud that I share blood ties with this modern warrior. Happy 86th to the reigning Queen Mother of the Samonte family, Trinidad (whose name inspired mine)!
