Elliott Starchild

Elliott Starchild is a bard who loves to sing and perform for a crowd. But he realizes that he also has to be ready to fight the undead, vampires, and werewolves that live in the wilderness.

I just realized I hadn't shared pics of Elliott out in the world!

I also realized that when I do make the video I want to with Elliott, it is going to cover a range of fandoms. I'll be my Dungeons & Dragons character that is based on a popular music artist, with a name inspired by a character from Glee, singing a song from a Broadway musical.

Elliott's wig is finally done! I was sitting there watching Drag Race and kept thinking about the wig, which was just in my peripheral vision. I pulled it over and realized the gap between down and up wasn't as gaping as I thought it was. I started playing around with the hair and started to find a shape I like. So I got out the hairsprays and used the basic one to get the general shape in place. Then I'd finish things off with the Got2B and glue things in place.

It's taken a lot of work, but he's finally done. Now to start setting money aside to get the upgrades to his shirt and boots done!

Still excited

The last post I wrote, I was in a bit of a funk IRL. Life has been stressful lately. I've taken a new approach to some of my characters. This campaign does not need to be the only one that Elliott lives in and experiences.

Yeah, he's probably going to look different in every other campaign he'll be in, but he can be my go-to Bard! Nothing says I can't use him in other campaigns as is. Well, aside from the clothes. But I'm really enjoying him as a bard and I would be happy to take him into other campaigns. I'm learning how versatile a bard can be in a campaign. I'm thinking he might be a good character to keep in my back pocket.

I saw there was a noticeable gap where the two wigs came together. So I pulled the weft along the part from the Rufio to add to the final wig. It will need some teasing to get the weft's roots hidden, but it fills the gap precisely!

After thinking, pinning, and repinning, I finally put together the two pieces! I sewed the top and bottom together.

Then I glued the seam down so it would stay going the right direction. It's not as hard as I thought it would be!

Feeling deflated

The downside to creating your D&D character IRL is you have that much more to get frustrated about when you don't really get to be them in the game you created them for.

I love Elliott. I may have put him together really quickly, but I have this whole personality and look and such for who he is that I have not been able to really channel in the game. Either it's because certain players seem to think we're in a game where they're player 1 and we're all just supposed to follow them, or we're busy fighting undead hordes.

I'm trying to infuse his personality into those battle moments, but these last few have been grueling and running out of spell slots did not help. A lot of his quips can come through his spells, but when he runs out, there's not much else to do. Especially when others are making "Whip it" references and jokes that he would be the one making when one of the characters uses their whip.

I'm starting to think if the DM is not going to give me the chance to really role-play, I'm just going to save it all for when I'm Elliott at conventions and do the bare minimum in game. I really love this character, but he's built for this specific setting: Ravenloft-esque; think Steampunk but with undead and vampires and magic. I can't just transfer him to another campaign later. I just want the opportunity to have one performance at an inn or be able to get more than one word in edgewise.

Now on to wig #2! Much easier than wig #1 now that I know where I'm joining the two together. I took out the full weft and partial wefts just above the point that I wanted to use.

Once they were removed, time for the scissors!

Now that I have the two wigs separated into the parts I need, on to bringing the two together!

Taking out the two wefts that go around the top instead of across. In doing so, I realized I could simply separate the top from the sides instead of cutting!

So now I have the top I need for his hair!

Granted, it does look weird by itself.

But it's going the direction I want! Now to get wig 2 prepped and ready. Having this part is going to help with that.

I decided to finally wash Elliott's original wig. I turned the hot water up all the way and let it soak before going in to wash. This way it'll have all night to dry!

Wig work will commence!

The second wig for Elliott's hair arrived today! I even started to pull stitches from it to allow for an easier time cutting through the cap. In pulling stitches I have come up with my plan of attack for these two wigs.

I even brushed out the first wig and I really wish it worked because brushed out it really looks like Adam just woke up. But that makes me feel better about my choice. I really think that if I can combine the two wigs the way I want to, it will result in something closer to what I have been envisioning this whole time.

Back in May, my hubby asked on behalf of the DM if I'd like to join a new D&D campaign. I had an hour before the game was going to start for the first time to get my character together. Thankfully I had an idea for a bard based off Adam Lambert. I had to make a few changes, like making him purely human, but got him rolled up and ready to go, naming him Elliott Starchild. I grabbed a recent B&W photo Adam had posted to use as my character's token in the game. After the session was done, I colorized it in photoshop to create this, character art to somewhat reflect what I was aiming for.

Since then I have worked to bring Elliott to life in time for DragonCon 2021. While the coat and vest were easy enough to make. His hair on the other hand... I did get a wig styled and finished in time, but when I put it on, I immediately took it off. It did not work, to put it mildly. Thankfully I had a wig that suits the character and wore that. I have plans to improve the wig and get it looking right. I will be posting that work here as soon as I get started on it.

Hopefully sometime soon I'll be able to afford the shirt and boots I really want for him, which he will be able to afford in the game.

This blog will also contain tales of the encounters and battles he has gone through once he survives them. Right now, I'm just hoping he will survive to tell them all.
