Speyer
Our next stop was Speyer, another German city along the Rhine. We didn't get there until the afternoon, at which point it was excursion time.
My mom decided to take the day off, so I abandoned the "gentle walkers" group and joined one of the regular groups instead. Our tour guide was a Portuguese instructor at a nearby university, and he primarily explained the history of Catholicism to us as we schlepped around the city.
I forgot to mention that, of course, there has been a heat wave in the Rhine valley during our trip. I'm starting to think I have some sort of weather powers, bringing unpleasant heat with me wherever I travel. It's been in the mid to high 80s most days, which isn't as bad as Jilli's and my 100-degree Italian adventure, but still not ideal.
Anyway, our tour guide primarily gave us a religious history lesson about Catholic indulgences and the emergence of Protestantism, which I guess was technically relevant because Speyer was the birthplace of Protestantism, but like... it was also the (supposed) birthplace of pretzels, and I would have liked to hear more about that, especially since all the little guys on the walk/don't walk signals are carrying pretzels.
The main attraction in Speyer was — say it with me — the Cathedral.
At one point the emperor didn't like the pope and tried to make Speyer the new Catholic pilgrimage site by building a huge cathedral and filling it with relics, including C3PO's head and someone's femur-based crafts project.
Unlike the elaborate gothic cathedrals in the other cities, this one is Romanesque, meaning it is much simpler and less adorned.
But it did have this neat candle altar thing shaped like a tree with weird animals and bugs on it.
Also, while we were wandering around inside the cathedral, our tour guide apparently got shat on by a bird, and he didn't turn his microphone off, so we were all treated to him muttering a volley of "scheisse!" to himself while we admired the austere beauty of the architecture.
The tour ended after that, and we were set loose upon the town to do whatever we wanted. It was really hot so I wandered around a bit but ultimately headed back to the ship in dire need of a shower and dinner.
Many days without a good night's sleep were catching up to me, so unfortunately I had to skip trivia night (unfortunate for the people whose team I would have wound up on — I'm great at trivia) and went to bed early.
