So this video started going around my facebook today, with about a dozen of my female friends sharing the link with comments like, and “Everyone needs to see this”, and “All girls should watch this,” and “This made me cry.” And I’m not trying to shame those girls! I definitely understand why they would do so. And I don’t want to be a killjoy. But as I clicked link and started watching the video, I started to feel a slight sense of discomfort. Superman and vegetarianism... Because he can literally see the electromagnetic spectrum. He can see – he can see everything, he can see – and I stole this flat-out from a writer named Elliot Maggin – he can see when things die, and it’s – it’s not a New Age-y aura thing, he just sees the electromagnetic spectrum, he sees the colors change when plants die, when animals die and stuff, and when animals die in particular, it is just an unpleasant color. It’s an unpleasant thing that he’s seeing in a wavelength that – people don’t, you hear a lobster scream for the first time, you stop eating lobster for a bit. Imagine that with every living thing on the planet, and so my idea was, “Let’s say that Superman’s a vegetarian.” That did not stick. In fact, that was the one big misstep I made in Birthright, because that was a 250-page story, and that was the one thing that people just got out the torches and pitchforks from, because they didn’t – because it’s a very masculine thing, to eat meat. And it seemed like a very girly thing I was doing to – a very sissy thing I was doing to Superman, to say he was a vegetarian, and it bothered some people, and so it was a gender issue. And nobody’s picked up on it since.
