Magda didn’t really get sad, in the traditional sense. Or maybe she’d just fucked with her brain enough that it didn’t know how to process it, calcified tears in her tummy instead of letting them out, hard and milky as a swallowed set of baby teeth. She’d felt them chattering, that morning, conscious, for once, in the clear light of day, that she contained something other than silence, so she’d texted Enzo to meet. “I’ll strike a…” she signed, squinting into the distance a second as her memory failed her – rare, for Magda, a human encyclopaedia – before finishing up, “…deal.” She paused. “For the iPad.” Magda hadn’t even considered what she’d ask for, prior to arrival. She didn’t particularly want anything, that she could think of. Studying him a second, Magda shrugged a shoulder after deciding, an uncharacteristic note of laughter snagged at the back of her throat – she’d thought of Otis, the perturbed look on their face when she snatched their shirt like a cat grabbing a kitten by the scruff of it’s neck. “I want the shirt off your back.”
there were people enzo didn't quite understand ---- not that he understood much in the traditional sense, mostly filing things away in his spongebob-cartoon-like office in his brain. facts and habits and people's names and their mothers names, all up in there. to be pulled out at a later date. magda is one of them - her file is a bit barren. enzo doesn't know much about her beyond their interactions .. not quite an open book as some of irving's other residents, and he's not sure if that's a good or a bad thing. he's never been a true people person. his head tilts at the mention of a deal, unsure of exactly why there needs to be one when it's his anyway. but lets her continue. though his shirt is probably not going to cut it ---- he's scrawny and like, not at all muscular, not to mention it'd be weirdly embarrassing to run home like that. without a shirt on. he doesn't even work out, so he has no idea how it's supposed to look when they don't wear shirts while jogging. "why are you trying to get me naked? that's gross, magda. at least take me t'dinner first." his own nose scrunches up at the thought.

Manny took a quick glance at the woman speaking to him. He took another glance around to make sure she was speaking to him and not someone else. Maybe she had Bluetooth headphones in her ears. Still, he shrugged as she continued to talk. “so,” he asked, stuffing his hands in his pockets, “if you’ve walked around everywhere, where are you walking to now?” As far as he was aware, unless she was resuming her walk in which she had already seemed bored by. “I don’t want to sound… insensitive, but isn’t part of the fun of going places to, you know, go with friends?” As far as he could tell, Emmanuel could tell the girl didn’t seem to have friends. At least none to waster her time with.
“just … around,” is alexis’ ever-so-eloquent answer, knowing the answer is probably back to her own place. that’s how seems to be the past few months. steps forward that always lead her to the same path of loneliness, back into the confines of her house by herself. it’s a sad routine that alexis is trying to break. it doesn’t seem to be working. “hard to do when you don’t have many friends to begin with, here,” snorts ----- it’s as pathetic tumbling out of her mouth as it is just thinking it. god. “where are your friends?” at attempt to get the topic off of her lack of peers, and onto them, like a shitty uno reverse.
“any chance you have any experience with breaking into someone else’s phone? i may have left my ex a drunkenly embarrassing voicemail that needs to disappear pronto.”
@irvingstarters
“i’m ninety percent sure that that’s illegal,” not that she’s going to snitch or anything ---- as long as it won’t get her landing in jail, aviva could frankly care less. “depends. what’d it say?” if she’s going to attempt to help, she at least gets to be nosy.

suspicion is common in the averescu family. even between siblings, it’s difficult to not just assume a malice motive behind genuine concern and love for each other. raphael thinks he’s getting better at easing his own suspicious disposition, but it’s hard when he doesn’t even know how to be genuine or be able to point out what is and isn’t sincere since he’s barely seen it displayed by his own adoptive parents and extended family members. it’s not like he WANTS to not trust his little sister, but even she seems to doubt his words of reassurance. and she isn’t wrong to do so — raphael is known to EXCEL at lying. but, comforting his sister with the truth is his top priority rather than lying to make her keep spiraling. raphael just chuckles at her retort. ❛ ‘cause most people are babies, dev. overly nice and sensitive and shit, ❜ he means to sound shitty — as usual. ❛ some people can handle us and some people just can’t. you’re great and i wouldn’t want anyone else to be my lil’ sister. don’t need to change who you are just to make others happy ‘n fit in. that’s what people wanted US to do, remember ? fuck ‘em. ❜ raphael scoffs. just thinking. ❛ get mom outta your head. ❜
she’s not sure if it’s because feelings in and of themselves were hardly ever taught to be dealt with in a healthy manner, or if devon is so used to pushing them aside and twisting them into the wrong way of thinking, but there’s always a sinking feeling in her chest. deep - deep - deeper until she reaches rock bottom in the soles of her feet, no way to reach the shore of what is the actual intent. she wonders if he feels the same. they don’t talk, much, about their time at home ----- or what used to be home, though she’s not entirely sure what to call it now. part of her wishes he’d burnt it to the ground, ashes only to remain, then maybe they could destroy the shitty memories to go with it. yelling. fighting. screaming. crying. it’s both distant and happened yesterday, foggy in the way you feel when you wake up after crying yourself to sleep. devon pushes it down to the bottom again, like all the guilt and shame she feels for not being the daughter her mother wanted. no one asks, she doesn’t answer. it’s better that way. “you’re sensitive, too,” he’s not and she knows it — just messing with him at this point to try and clear the weird tension she brought to the conversation. “you sound like you’re talkin’ straight out of a lifetime movie right now.” it’s what she was expecting anyhow, and devon won’t mention the pride she feels in her chest at the words. it’s not like raph needs to know that she craves validation more than anything ( he probably does know, but that’s okay, as long as he doesn’t say it aloud ) . “she’s not in my head,” eyes roll like he just said the stupidest thing in the world, “haven’t thought ‘bout her since we left.” that’s a lie and they both know it.

Historically, for Nyla, maintaining friendships or relationships had been the equivalent of trying to braid a jellyfish. Hoodie wasn’t like that, though. In fact, it was actually rather easy with them, though you wouldn’t know it from that moment, over at Hoodie’s, Hoodie having to heimlich Nyla because they’d popped a small glass ornament into their mouth and swallowed. Wriggling around with a choked up squeal of laughter – they felt oddly kin with a guinea pig upon omitting it – Nyla slid back onto their feet through the buckle of Hoodie’s arms, blinking watery eyes to watch the culprit roll to a standstill along worn floorboards. They’d found it randomly in the pocket of their floaty cream dress, tried to eat it with all the impulse control of a dog with nothing behind the eyes. ”Oh, that’s… Didn’t taste… Bad… snack,” they decided, only realising they were still holding Hoodie’s arms around their waist after a prolonged stare at the coughed up “candy”. Rather than let go, they craned to glance at Hoodie over their shoulder, raising an eyebrow that had a random fleck of carpet fluff attached to it. “Why’d y’tell me to eat that?” @eastrnhighway
they’re not sure if nyla is always this chaotic or if it’s something they put on show for hoodie, but it’s endearing all the while, even if they don’t say it aloud. the hemlich thing isn’t what they were expecting ----- good thing they know it, thanks uncle nick, or else maybe nyla would’ve died. — okay that’s a bit dramatic, but it could’ve happened! hoodie is nothing if not ever thinking of worst scenario’s, and this was the closest thing to death he’s gone to in a long time. “it nearly killed you,” said with conviction of a parent scolding their child, as if an toddler and their mother arguing about putting things in their mouth that don’t belong. it makes their nose scrunch in distaste. “i literally did not?” the sarcasm goes right over hoodie’s head, taking it literally. because they truly don’t remember saying to eat it ---- not even as a dare. maybe they did. oh god. oh fuck. jesus christ. “are you okay?”

❝ bark ? like legitimately ? i’ve heard it works wonders in the bar scene, but on the street they may be more likely to ask questions. which would defeat the purpose. ❞ but what did she know, right ? perhaps she’s been missing out this whole time. ❝ y’gonna try it ? ❞
“sure,” he shrugs like it’s the easiest answer in the whole world. was he actually going to do it? no, not entirely, but it could be a bit funny when parents were getting on his nerves. elijah does worry it’ll backfire though. “maybe. dunno. think the parents will like it when i bark at them?”

it wasn’t unusual for nathan to find himself wandering. his blemished white filas had seen the side of every road, yet found that in the end they really did lead him nowhere. he always ended up back where he started; stuck in cycle he couldn’t find his way out from. yet, whenever he had some down time he’d always find himself back on the road. nathan had his head buried in a paperback he’d read a thousand times. he’d practically memorized the arguments made by the great philosopher hajime tanabe, and with each step he took tried to form counter arguments in his head. while he’s aware of the other’s presence beside him, he doesn’t pay her much attention at first. to him, there’s no reason for her to be speaking to him so he figures she must be talking to someone else. however after a beat of silence she goes on. he lifts his head up to focus on her before looking around; she was actually talking to him. “ uh…─── i don’t think i’m the expert on anything fun, sadly. ” he started, closing his book and dropping it to his side as he walked beside her. “ walking around in circles seems to be my idea of a good time. maybe you should think about what would be the most fun thing for you to do, and then do the exact opposite. something about finding joy in the places you least expect it, or so i’m told. ”
there was one thing she wasn’t used to, even after all this time: loneliness. she could feel alone in a crowded room, like no one in those hollywood parties understood her or her plight, but the feeling of actually being alone with her thoughts is not something she’s far interested in. it’s been happening too often lately. she doesn’t hang out with her family like she should, her friends wondering where she is, but the soles of her shoes have possibly met most of the popular places in irving. alexis has gotten used to having people at her sides for hours a time, at all times, never a moment of peace unless she creates it for herself —-- which has become almost a fear since her move to irving. the quiet and loneliness has become something like a shadow, following her around wherever she went. “oh?” eyebrow quirks up a tad, head tilted in a non-characteristic puppy manner at the response. well. a light chuckle escapes from lips - as if she hasn’t done the circle of familiar places ( which, granted, isn’t even a forth of irving she’s sure ) at least five times in the past two days. desperate for company and something to fill the void. “i don’t know if that’s something that happens here, though. all that’s happened so far is some dog tried to bite me and i got honked at for jay walking. it’s like, gilmore girls but way more boring.”

it is not what she wanted to hear from enzo’s disembodied voice, though she’s not at all startled by his sudden appearance. he seemed to come and go as he pleased and maggie welcomed him with open arms each time. ❝ a bad thing ? ❞ she repeats aloud, trying to determine if it was something that warranted an urgentness she was still not quite awake enough to give. not that that was saying much, considering her ideal hours of functioning wouldn’t be for a few more hours still. part of her wants to laugh at the absurdity of enzo doing anything bad, certain that there was nothing he could do that could warrant such a reaction, but she doesn’t. not as he rounds the corner and looks flustered and bluey seems to stare at her like she should know better. she begins signing before her lips can catch up. ❝ whatever it is, i’m sure it’ll be fine. or we can fix it. just tell me what happened. ❞
there’s far worse things he could do than write a note. sure, there’s like, actual crimes ( not that he would. to be clear ) but this is more personal than those, he supposes. it’s the kind of regret that’s funny. yes, the whole thing is his fault and pretty much freaking out over it, but then again, writing the note and placing it there for magda to find is funny. unsure if he should be feeling as bad as he is right now —- he just doesn’t want anybody hurt under his influence, or, the note’s influence. no offense to magda .. she’s just a wildcard. maggie can help him. he’s pacing her room now, bluey in the doorway looking more bored now than anything else, having heard enzo rant about the situation and potential fallout for hours before he stormed out of the trailer and ran here. “i wrote a note.” yes, that’s all he’s going to give. she’ll have to press if she wants more.

the moment devon pauses, raphael can tell she’s REALLY thinking. to the point where she’s almost overthinking — the little changes on her visage memorized. it makes him frown, reminding him of the one of the reasons they escaped that hell hole. ❛ oh, ❜ he replies at purses his lips, glancing down at the baseball in his palm for a moment before giving it a light toss up in the air. ❛ i don’t think you’re a mean person at all, dev, ❜ raphael answers as he catches the ball again. he chooses his words carefully. probably not the best time to tell her she can be a ‘ lil shithead ’ and gets on his nerves sometimes. but, devon has far more redeeming traits. he, not so much. he’s been on this earth a few more years than she has, so there’s been more time for his shittiness to really marinate in his personality and become irreversible. ❛ but, people probably interpret how you talk and act the wrong way, s’all. ‘cause they don’t really know you. i know you care ‘bout people you’re close to — a lot. although, you can be a bit brutally honest and pushy at times … which can just freak people out. but, it’s just who we are. ❜ he shrugs his broad shoulders, giving the baseball another toss before he asks again ❛ did something happen ? ❜
sometimes, she doesn’t know what’s true and what’s not. what’s being said to appease her or to get her to shut up, versus what’s actually being truthful. being pacified then belitted the entire time they lived with their parents was suffocating, always two seconds from truly passing out from the lack of space to breathe. devon likes to think her siblings are truthful to her, always. not that she nessecarily trusting of them all the time ----- they keep secrets from each other, it’s what siblings do, but when it comes to times like this? there’s an all too familiar voice that creeps in the back of her mind, yet to be pushed out. it’s like an ocean tide slowly pulling her back out to sea and the lifejacket devon has is shitty. she tries not to think about it, tries not to think about just why it keeps coming back like a rabid animal. she just shrugs. raph knows what to say, most of the time. it’s the only reason she’s asking him aloud instead of letting it fester in her mind until she explodes. he’s not the only one who wants to light matches, burn down the whole thing and start new. they both couldn’t do that, still can’t, but it’s nice to dream about. “but isn’t honesty the best policy?” raises an eyebrow at that, like she’s questioning his motives here ( she is ) . “dunno, i just think people shouldn’t be so offended by the fact that i’m not gonna baby them and tell them stuff just to make them happy.” that sounds shitty — she means it in a way that’s entirely, like, from a good place. she just doesn’t know how to word is right. “no. just thinking.” unfortunately.
she’s not sure where she’s going — walking out the door to rockin’ and rollin’, mostly blinded by the lights inside and reminded far too much of a life she hoped to leave ( mostly ) behind. walks into step beside someone, as if alexis had known them her whole life, instead of being a weirdo that talks to people like they’re friends. “what’s the most fun thing to do around here?” asks like a local - she’s an actress, she knows how to sound somewhat genuine. not far off, even. she’s been here for a while now, more than some others who have only recently moved here, but still hasn’t explored like she should. too involved in her own grief. “i feel like i’ve been everywhere, and walkin’ ‘round in circles the entire time.” what kind of fun is she looking for? not even sure of it, just something to ease the anxiety in the pit of her stomach. / @irvingstarters
