pop culture connoisseur by DEADLETTER. i found out about this tune on the radio, it played before my band at the time's track played and i fell in love with. i found this record completely by accident in vinyl eddie's in york and bought it without even thinking, the art is incredible and the tune is amazing and modern while also being weirdly classic at the time time.
cookie scene single by the go! team that i bought in 2020 when it came out. the go! team is arguably my favourite band to exist EVER, and this record affirms that for me because i love a visual... and the go! team knows how to do visuals. it's just such an adorable record. i had the pleasure of seeing these guys in brighton last year and it was the best gig i've ever been to (and i've been to a LOT of gigs!)
recent advances vol II single release by fortune drive i found in a crate while record shopping in leeds a few years ago. i played the shit out of the B side of this record when i first bought it, because 'to the rye' as a song is just so addicting. i remember i was cross-faded at a party once, so i ran away from the hustle and bustle of it all and lay in the host's bed (i was seeing him at the time) blasting this song through my headphones, high out of my mind and grinning ear to ear because it sounded amazing. definetely a summer single.
(peep the hmv sticker... 99p? imagine that now)
things can only get worse from here by the caulfield cult. i found this by chance very cheap at a carboot sale coincidentally right after finishing catcher in the rye and assumed it was probably a sign and that i should get it - i'm very glad i did, it's such an emotional album. the band is from singapore, which i was shocked by when i researched them because they've really nailed the american emo sort of sound. the singer's voice is unique compared to a lot of emo/post-hardcore bands which adds a lot of charm.
brand new (!!!) frankenstein girls will seem strangely sexy by mindless self indulgence, so excuse the quality. it's so brand-spankin'-new that you can see my reflection in the packaging. this album was recorded in the 2000s, and you can tell just by the art by jamie hewlett (who i adore) and the sound they were going for. as much as mindless self indulgence's reputation isn't great because of jimmy urine's crimes, you can't deny that this album is pretty flawless... not in terms of topics, but in terms of visuals and sound. i've always wanted this in my collection so i'm over the moon i finally have it.
blood // sugar // secs // traffic by the gotobeds from 2016, found this in earworm records in york. this is the sort of record that i needed at the time, i remember i was going through a messy breakup when i first listened to this record and it was the sort of thing i needed; screamy indie. the third and fourth tune on side a make me feel bittersweet about that time now.
you make me malfunction/duh duh ep by hipshakes from 2007, found this in the corn exchange in leeds whilst record shopping. the illustration by oliver allchin pulled me in and thank god, because it's one of my favourite records to listen to. i love a shouty, loud record - it's nice to find a record like that without the rage (as much as i love angry music). it's loud, shouty music that you could play at an indie bar and have everyone up and dancing to. a great little gem to find for a band that didn't see much mainstream success, the world wasn't ready for them, haha.
