Roast Horse is a members-only horse meat restaurant in Hiroo. The exact place cannot be disclosed in accordance with the promise with the member who invited me to the secret restaurant.
This restaurant was opened in 2014. It is remarkable that the owner of this restaurant used cloud funding to secure the fund to start up this restaurant. The owner used one of a Japanese cloud funding site, Makuake, which is managed by an internet advertising company, Cyber Agent.
The restaurant provides a full course menu at JPY10,800 including free flow drinks.
The free flow menu includes very fine Japanese sake. The stuff recommends the best fitting sake for the dishes.
The restaurant brings horse meat from Kumamoto prefecure where is the most popular horse breeding area.
Marinated raw horse meat covered by whipped raw egg. Very rich and creamy taste.
Sushi of horse meat.
Sashimi of horse hearts. Its really fresh.
The melting point of horse fat is lower than that of beef. So sashimi of such a fatty parts tastes so sweet.
Croquet of horse meat.
Stewed horse meat.
Vegetables roasted in a special oven.
Grilled horse meat. It is tender and so juicy.

Tsukiji Market is too much clouded. I recommend to visit Ota Market, which is located 7km south of Shinagawa station. See the below access map. The location is seriously inconvenient.
The easiest access to the market is to take Keikyu Train, drop off at Heiwajima-Sta(平和島), and take a taxi. Or you can take a bus from Shinagawa station directly to the market. The bus stop name is North Gate of the Market(北門).
This market is for serious fish and vegetables buyers. There are no tourists.
If you wish to see the serious wholesale market and don’t mind to spend time to access to the inconvenient place, I can recommend this market.
Yutaka Sushi(ゆたか鮨) is located in the restaurant building inside the market. Originally this restaurant has served sushi for market workers and buyers. However, the restaurant can welcome the visitors.
The restaurant serves sushi course at JPY3,700 with 12 pieces of sushi and soup. I ordered additional 4 pieces. The total bill was JPY6,500 per person. It is amazing.
Though the mood and style of the place are not so sophisticated, the fish itself was really fresh and good quality. I think it is worth paying JPY6,500.
Cucumber roll, as called Kappa(カッパ), is Yutaka’s specialty. Elaborately slices cucumber are rolled together with sesame, wasabi, and salt. The dish refreshes your mouth. This is a “must-eat” item.
The outside of the restaurant looks like a serious logistics centre. Nobody imagines there is such a good sushi restaurant inside…

Okame (おかめ) is an “oden” restaurant in a residential area nearby Shibuya. This blog introduced another “oden” restaurant before. However, this restaurant has a different taste from that one.
There are queue from 10 to 20 mins before the opening time at 17:00 in spite of its inconvenient location. I visited there in a rainy day and expected not queue but my expectation was let down.
Though it is an oden restaurant, Okame has a good izakaya like menu. After enjoying the izakaya menu, order a variety of oden cuisine. This restaurant’s oden soup is clear and with less soy sauce.
Oden menu
Soft roe of a cod
Sliced octopus and whelk(tsubugai/つぶ貝) on a skewer
Fibrous meat of beef and fish cakes
(from left) fish ball, taro, and bamboo shoot
Cabbage rolled minced meat
Tofu, buterburs, and radish
Rice with dashi soup topped with seaweed and wasabi
Total budge is around JPY7,000-8,000 per person including drinks and tax. Not so cheep for such an oden restaurant but the quality of the food is rather higher than that of a typical oden restaurant.

The sushi restaurant, Kizushi(喜寿司), has served classical Tokyo style sushi since 1927 in Nihonbashi-ningyocho(日本橋人形町), an old town nearby Tokyo station.
The chef, Mr. Ryuichi Yui, is a third generation of this sushi restaurant, born in 1942. He started his career as a French cook and turned back to his home, Kizushi, to become a sushi chef.
Kizushi preserves an authentic Tokyo style sushi. For example, Mr. Yui elaborately makes shrimp into an artistic shape.
My favourite ones are shrimp(saimaki-ebi/才巻海老), ark shell(akagai/赤貝), tuna(maguro/鮪), and swordfish(kajiki/カジキ), which is one of a traditional Tokyo style sushi item.
This restaurant opens in lunch time and is not so clouded. It has lunch course with two prices: JPY3,500 and JPY5,000, including 8 pieces of nigiri sushi and 3 pieces of sushi roll.

A classic sushi restaurant with 70 years history The sushi restaurant, Kizushi(喜寿司), has served classical Tokyo style sushi since 1927 in Nihonbashi-ningyocho(日本橋人形町), an old town nearby Tokyo station.
Sushi, soba, and tempura are Tokyo’s typical original foods. Mikawa(みかわ) is an authentic Tokyo style, as called “Edo-mae(江戸前)”, tempura restaurant. It serves fine and authentic tempura lunch at JPY1,200. The lunch course includes some squid, shrimp, fish, and some vegetables,
Current chef is a second generation of this restaurant. His father is a legend of tempura chef in Tokyo. Now his father moves to a new place nearby the original restaurant. The new venue is called Mikawa Zezankyo(みかわ 是山居). This blog however supports the new generation.
This restaurant uses sesame oil for its tempura. The characteristics of Tokyo style tempura are the oil. Sesame oil generates tempura’s savoury flavour.
This restaurant stands on a backstreet in Kayabacho, which is nearby Nihonbashi area.

Buchi(ぶち) is an izakaya restaurant in Shirokane-Takanawa(白金高輪), a residential area nearby Roppongi. Its special menu is Kawara-Soba(瓦そば) at JPY1,000.
Boiled Japanese soba noodle is put on a heated kawara(瓦) plate and topped with sliced egg omelet and seasoned beef. Kawara(瓦) is a Japan’s original roof tile. In Yamaguchi prefecture, people use the tile as a hot plate. Lying on the hot plate, the soba noodle gets a crispy texture. You dip the noodle in soy sauce based dash soup.
The restaurant has a lot of a la carte menu. The place is very casual and the budget is JPY5,000 per person.
