How my Favorite Childhood Story Shapped me as A Writer
It goes without saying that the art of literature is still alive and well with the world. For me, it lives within every strand of my DNA. It is more to me than what I do, it is indeed a huge part of who I am as it is to any other reader or writer.
In my youth of being a writer with a journal full of daydreams and no one to appreciate them, there were many stories I read that in some way or form contributed to my writing style and drive to write. One in particular has stood the test of time. A classic piece written by Frances Hodgson Burnett, "The Little Princess." The life of Sarah Crewe was nothing short of profound to my own life, her character Dynamic and Powerful in its own right. The story itself illustrates on the ever famous battle of good and evil, with good Always finding a way to rise above the odds that evil sets before it.
Being a lover of contradictions war and victory, I took to it immediately. Many would argue and say that Sarah's character had no growth because she simply received back what she had lost in the beginning. How and why is it perceived that gaining back what we have lost isn't a true victory? That it was not suffrage enough? Why is it that fighting back is held higher in a esteem than trying to make peace? As I grow older both in body and spirit, I see more to this fictional piece than just a little girl who lost and won. I see a greater good at war with a greater evil it's only weapon being the sincerity of its heart not to succumb to evil doings. She reminds us all the even in the face of our worst circumstances, we still have a choice to do the right thing. I see the Persistence of evil and envy and what it can do to a person and those around them. The antagonist, Mrs. Minchin of Mrs. Minchins Seminary for young girls was described as:" tall, dull and respectable." In a painted description of Sarah to compare to her home. You can almost picture of her from this: a tall, narrow woman with a fitted at the waist dress, most likely the color of a sky after it has rained, a pointed nose, false smile, neat hair and sharp bony features. All this contribute to both the massiveness of her persuasion in making Captain Crewe believe his little girl was truly in good hands and the vulnerability of her character for doing so.
In all this I learned the value of a moment and literature where you feel as if you were a witness to what was happening. I drew closer to Sarah through her intimate love of Storytelling and learning new things through Reading. I felt like a young lady in the seminary, eyeing Mrs. Mrs Minchin with scrutiny as she took her wrath upon Sarah who'd done her no harm, providing Comfort to her in the store away of the attic when she have felt lost and alone and riding away in the sunset by her side at the end. Sarah taught me that we truly are who we believe we are. Writer, or Princess. ❤

Horror: The Message that isn't being recieved
Side note: it's a repost ☺
Verse of the Day: Deuteronomy 21:8
It is in my own personal belief that with an all horror genre pieces of work both in literature and film, there is a message conveying a warning to humanity. Some are classic tell tale signs of a person's mental decline, being in the presence of unlike spirits and what can happen if we succumb to them. The list goes on but what have we noticed? The Bible speaks of times in which sign will be given to tell the season of humanities end and the reign of Gods return. Can it then not be concluded that the horror genre depicts certain elements of such a time? In some cases we may be looking straight into Hells sitting room. Horror reveals that just as there are great angels and Feats of Triumph, the beauty and sadness of innocence is still yet relevant, there is a great evil waiting to tarnish it and we have reasons to be wary. Just as there are angels there are demons. That is the message that I don't believe is being seen. Horror shows us that there are ends worse than death and that the thought of living may Scare us more. It is interesting in its own way.
I enjoy a good mystery myself, a well-read strategy induced Adventure if you will. Be advised that you should never wander down spiritual alleys that you aren't prepared to handle the consequences of having immersed into. Understand that there are conditions aside from being writers but as Christians that we must not tread lightly. Be aware of the influence of certain art forms, the way of her to be written or inspired from is not a light and Airy feel. It is the part of man that Jesus died to release us from, see it as what could have been had had Jesus not paid for our sins and take note because he'll is a potential reality for all of us. Aside from those factors, I personally find nothing appalling about horror aside from the gore factor that some fine very pleasing to watch.
I am more of a suspense Chaser. If you are inspired to proceed in this genrw, know that there is conflict. Your pain will tread untraveled seas, dark caves and cursed tombs but that doesn't mean they are void of meaning. There is purpose in the written word of horror other than entertainment for Thrill Seekers, purpose we as writers can use as an advantage for the sake of our purpose. Be wise.

Verse of The Day: John 14:14
As an author and as a Christian, it is considered controversial to discuss the conflict of interest as it applies to our written work. "Is it biblical?", "Is it in good standing with the word?", "Can this be seen as an appropriate piece for me to write?" Now I do believe that you can be an avid believer of Christ and your work will find a way to reflect upon just that, if it be through inspiration of a certain gospel or more direct and biblical based.
What I mean is: you are a character in HIS story, he has developed you and for whom you will create because all things done in goodness and in light are inspired of him to manifest through you. Isn't that encouraging? Takes a bit of clunk out of your ink? Just imagine how harmonious his pen must have been to write, without revision: our entire lives. The way in which we will grow and who We will grow to become, that counts double in our maturity as one of his authors.
Just think, we are never the same person twice, as Alice quoted in Alice in Wonderland "I knew who I was this morning but I've changed a few times since then." What's so beautiful and profound about that is, that we enjoy the experience of being a human, crafted by his own Divine hands and to be recognized among all that he has made, his favorite creations.
With that in mind, think of the most dynamic and Powerful of literary characters and stories ever written, they were given to man from God. You'll see him in many forms: In old-aged battles of goods and evils, in tales of Triumph against Great odds, you'll see him in the Redemption of a lost soul when Hope is long forgotten. I'm aware of the squinted eyes and looks of Skeptics when I say that just because a book isn't classified under a religious text doesn't make it harmful to read or any less great than those that are. God is Not religion he is Life, Light, Beauty and the Heart of creation himself and upon man he granted many gifts, for some it was the way of the pen and ink through which the Holy Bible was written, to portray his might, his grace, his peace, and his Almighty power.
When you write, ask yourself: to whom and for do I write and why? With your spiritual conscience clear, write. When you read, be able to discern the messages and motives of the writer.
Understand that just like the Bible whose focal message of love has been vastly preached upon also speaks of War, greed, betrayal, false accusers, gluttony, great evils and great Heroes, there are things to be written of you to share with the world. Your story is yet to end until the last ink drops. Your strengths and flaws are no mistakes, you are not to be edited nor should you be afraid of who you are in his eyes. As writers it is our sacred duty to acknowledge the beauty and horror of written texts through our Inspirations given of him. To create is our DNA. A perfect mirror of Gods own genius.

The Anatomy of The Creative Process in Writing
Verse of The Day: Romans 10:13
Some would categorize the "creative process" as 50% coffee 50% loose leaf notes, However, I see it broken up into four distinct groups: Fluid Ideas that are nonconstucted and float around, waiting to be grabbed down to your paper by a sudden spark of inspiration. All the ideas that make it to the paper, the rat race to being written if you will. The elaborated concepts, or idea's that you spiderweb into mini outlines of your favorite ideas. Then we have the first draft winners, what you'll be spending most of your time writing.
I spend a lot of time with floating ideas which isn't as productive as it sounds. An archive of notes isn't as appealing as one of well thought out and tangible products. The hard part is being able to grab a GOOD concept that comes to mind and elaborate on it. This has proven more difficult during periods of time that I walk away from writing all together. As a visual learner, there MUST be notes involved in deciding what to write.
The rat race of the creative process involves a lot of knit picking at the "disposable" concepts, if I can't build further than the first characters name, it's not worth trying to establish it further.
Building my spiderweb around an idea usually means I've found something solid. A concept that I enjoy, at least four or more characters, and even chapter drafts.
The First Draft winner comes with the most punch, the "now THIS is a story worth writing" idea. It takes me a few months to get to this point but it's well worth the ordeal and always produces the best of what my abilities can manage.
Enough about me, what about you? How would you disect your creative process when writing something new?

🖊Bonus Blog: What do I Write? Funny you asked... 👀
I've had many people ask me what it is that I actually write. Well, to answer that question I would say that I am a multi genre writer. This means that I write in more than one style obviously, and those consist of poetry, short stories, Christian / fiction suspense, mystery ,adventure and a little of romance. I also dabble in fanfiction. I'm not sure if that counts as a genre in itself but it is a community that I am a part of so I will include that as well. I started writing with poetry when I was about eight years old and it's been something that I've gotten stronger with. I don't always rhyme I don't always have the same childlike, Dr. Seuss like flow as much as I used to however, I've definitely matured in the angle and which I choose my words, so I still write poetry, and I still consider it one of my stronger suits. Next to that , after poetry I went into short stories. Now as a child most of my short stories were very dark and the reason for that is because I went into a state of depression at a very young age and it took an effect on how I chose to express myself through my written work and it wasn't until years later after I rededicated my life to Christ and began to walk in my face and in my truth that my work started reflecting more lighter topics... well I won't say lighter topics but they were more light filled and less dark and gloomy. I currently have four completed books one of them is available on booksie.com for free reads. I go by the name ebony quill hand just as I do here and as I do on most social media accounts aside from my personal pages. If I were forced to sum up what type of writer I really am and just HAD to have some form of label for all the people who are just stringent about placing everyone in a file within their egos....the closest I can give you is a poet / novelist.
Now you know and now we can continue with our lives knowing what kind of writer I am....BUT, I want to know, what kind of writer are you? what genre do you prefer to write in?, are you multi genre or do you prefer to stick to one specific style of writing? let me know in the comments below!
