In this culture, the veil belongs to the men. The women go uncovered. For a mostly Muslim people of the Sahara, that reversal is only the first surprise.
The Tuareg are the ones you may know as the blue men of the desert. The men wrap their heads and lower faces in a long indigo cloth called the tagelmust, and the dye rubs off onto their skin. A boy first puts it on around the age he becomes a man, and after that he keeps it up in public, often even while he eats. Baring your mouth in front of an elder or your wife’s family is considered rude. The women do not veil at all.
How the family works is just as different. Tuareg society is largely matrilineal, so a child belongs to the mother’s line, and descent, names, and inheritance run down through the women.
The tent is hers. A woman owns the home, much of the livestock, and her own jewelry, and she is the one who brings the tent into a marriage. Women move freely, pick who they marry, and can begin a divorce without any shame in it. If a marriage ends, it is the husband who leaves, walking out with little while the tent and the children stay with her.
One thing to be clear about. This is not a place where women rule. The chiefs and public leaders are still usually men. But the title passes down through the mother, the home belongs to the wife, and the most famous veil in the desert belongs to the men.

Sylvia Wynter: The Caribbean Philosopher
Sylvia Wynter was a radical philosopher from the Caribbean who explored modern history from the perspective of slavery, the Middle passage and plantation economics. In this animated documentary short, Wynter calls on us to rethink the very notion of what it is to be human.
A film by Marcela Pizarro, Stefania Sottile and Pomona Pictures. Voices: scholar, Dr. Sophia Azeb and Greta Mendez, dancer. This film is part of a series, Race Historicised: Epistemologies of Colour, that delves into the archives of Black intellectual thought, to showcase the work of towering figures who have contributed to the anti-racist struggle, in both theory and action.
Pink Princess
At 23, she is the youngest PhD graduate at UH
She is still the youngest person to obtain her PhD at the age of 17 and she earned another in Psychology at the young age of 23. Not many people hold two PhDs and I am proud to share with you, that I did the exact same thing but, not as young.
We definitely destroy your low IQ nonsense because we know that we don't have to prove ourselves to anyone, just ourselves and nothing you fucking inferior cowards can say or do to hinder us in any kind of way because you are irrelevant to us.
Every negative stereotype that you have insisted on us is in your own sick and weak minds because you can't do anything to stop us, we are unstoppable regardless of what challenges we have to face, we've been there before and we know that nothing can get in our way, except for ourselves.

Kiara Brokenbrough, the California woman who captured hearts across the internet in 2022 for pulling off her entire wedding for just $500, has died during childbirth. She was 32.
Kiara passed away on March 30 as her son, Jonah, was born. The cause of death has not been publicly disclosed. Jonah remains in the NICU but is reportedly improving, with family and hospital staff describing him as a fighter.
Kiara and her husband Joel first went viral after documenting their budget wedding on TikTok and YouTube. The couple kept costs to a minimum, spending just $42 on her dress and $100 on Joel’s suit, with a free outdoor location off Angeles Crest Highway in Southern California serving as their backdrop. Their story spread widely after being picked up by Good Morning America and the Los Angeles Times, with Kiara explaining their philosophy simply: “We knew that it would not be wise for us to go into debt over a wedding.”
The couple had been married for four years and were in the process of relocating from West Virginia back to their native California when Kiara unexpectedly passed. Just days before her death, the pair had celebrated with a joyful gender reveal and baby shower surrounded by loved ones.
Her passing has drawn renewed attention to the Black maternal health crisis in America. Black women are three to four times more likely to die during childbirth or from pregnancy-related causes than any other demographic — a statistic that advocates have long fought to bring to the forefront of public health policy.
Joel, a high school basketball coach, is now facing the unimaginable task of grieving his wife while caring for a premature newborn in the NICU alone.
A GoFundMe has been launched to support Joel through this devastating time. The page reads: “As Joel begins this unimaginable next chapter as an only parent to a premie in the NICU, and while dealing with the heartache of losing his beloved wife, he needs all the support he can get.”
