I feel like there's a massive difference between "I don't care about this person's shitty political opinions and I'm not letting that get in the way of our friendship!" and "Being unfriendly towards this person does absolutely no good so I might as well be nice."

Like no, I'm not going to marry a Mormon I'm not gonna be friends with the NRA dude I'm not buying presents for the trad wife or forcing myself to have a relationship with a MAGA relative. But if we're in line at the coffee shop and they talk to me, I gain absolutely nothing by stonewalling them or telling them off. I'm gonna be polite and maybe even friendly.

Like I understand the feeling of "You do not deserve to be treated like normal in public if you're going to openly present yourself as hateful" but what does that actually accomplish in these little interactions. They're just gonna go home thinking I'm an asshole and they were right to think all liberals/gays/whatever are assholes. You're not wrong, but you're thinking in terms of your own personal morality, and not the consequences of your actions. And the consequences of being nice are a lot better and might actually change that person's opinions, if enough of us treat them that way over time.
