For the sake of not letting this go to waste, I'll start blogging about the recording experience of our new full-length. After I take out this pizza from my oven.
Alright. Let's say that around 6:15 pm, EST, we started recording. First thing we did, of course, were drums. Well, let me backtrack and let you know about what led up to new record. Our friend and Band Dad Lon Beshiri, 1/2 of Tetra Records and owner of Hot As Fuck Records aka Shed Flanders, was nice enough to lend us his shed for practices and recording. Spencer and I moved into apartments this past August and Scott moved to Gainesville so having a practice space became a problem--especially before shows. So, we started going there and Lon helped us record a new song for the new Tallahassee Comp. We loved it. It sounds amazing (so do the other bands on the comp. Please, if you have some time, check it out. We have an eclectic music scene here). Without question, we knew Lon would be recording LP2.
We've spent this past year writing the songs and playing them here-and-there. If you caught us on tour this August, you would have heard one of them. I really don't know how to describe the sound; I feel like we've focused more on a definite sound but then we have a sporadic moment in which we channel our inner Dungeons & Dagrons. So, idk, we're still out there. More of a post-rock vibe, we're still listening to Explosions in the Sky. Therefore, we have two reeeeally long songs. Also have been jamming that new Caution Children record. Heavily. Surprisingly, that's influenced us a lot, so you'll hear some ambient interludes on the record. Spencer wrote most of the lyrics for these bad boys, which is awesome and a little weight off my back. Can't necessarily write those emo-bangerz if you can't find anything negative in your life. Which is good! But, other than jobs and student loans, I don't have anything that influenced me enough to write songs about. Out of the 8 or so, I wrote two. One actually about jobs and the other started out as a thank you note to my gf. Scott might help write lyrics too, whenever he comes to town. We're planning on putting some songs out on splits and you'll hear more Scott Songs.
Alright, so to the actually tracking: drums. They went well, I was able to knock out four tonight. Two more to go. I have to write parts for one of them and I'll be ready to knock that one out. I was blessed to have my dude Jake come by to watch and help tune my kit. If you think it sounds rad, thank him. He's an "uncultured swine." I did many takes. A few of these songs weren't entirely polished so when we jammed them, we would kind of look at each other and say, "we'll figure it out later, we'll just stop somewhere." That didn't help. We made these decisions tonight during the process. This involved way too much counting needed in a studio. "Okay, two times alone, then six times of this, eight times of that, two times of you alone AGAIN, then eight of building up and eight to close. End it with one time of this and done." I felt bad having to put Lon through with that but I'm sure he didn't mind too much. On top of this, Spencer's scratch tracks were accidentally too long at certain parts, just repeating measures, and that was a hassle to cut out without having to record the whole thing all over again. So we just left it. Fuck it.
Other than that, that's pretty much it for the first session. Hot As Fuck Records was not so hot as fuck tonight. Didn't sweat too much. That's nice. Things went smoothly, videos and pictures were taken (not sure where we'll post them but whenever I get them, I guess I can do that here too). Don't know what we'll call it yet but I'm sure Spencer will think of something. I'm gonna spend the next few months coming up with a cover too. Not sure if it will be another collage, but that's all I know rn so I'll start with that.
If you've read this and made it this far, thank you. Really. We're very grateful to have an opportunity of writing songs, putting all our energy and focus on them, spill our guts, and then play them to those that actually give a shit or enjoy. I can't wait (and hope we can) tour off this release. Thank you for reading and listening. Take care of yourselves.
