I have chosen this video as it describes what it was like to be an Aboriginal students in the 1960′s. As a frontloading activity I would encourage students to use the activity ‘Think, Pair, Share’. In pairs students are to reflect on similarities and differences between schooling in the 1960′s and the schooling that they are experiencing now. Encourage students to share their thoughts and feelings on the theme at hand.

PROMPT 5

Part A -

The cold, tired, young child had died in the night. He was hollow, transparent and had no strength from the lack of food. There in silence, he passed, forsaken and alone.

Part B -

The world continued to go around, regardless of the issues present.

Part C -

A basic frontloading activity in which I like to use with primary aged students is to analyse and discuss the front cover of a book prior to reading it. It is important to have well thought out questions to ask the students prior to beginning the discussion.

PROMPT 4

Whilst on my most recent placement there were many moments of good and bad literacy.

Beginning with the most negative part about their literacy routine, I noticed that mathematics was their main point of focus throughout the day and only did literacy when they had time to fit it in. For example, they began each day with Fast 5 and maths rotations followed by literacy and writing after recess if this didn’t clash with specialist classes. In line with this, I didn’t particularly love the way they did spelling. The students practiced their words and then they tested each other. This gave students the opportunity to possibly cheat in their spelling tests and not complete the task properly.

When considering the positives of their literacy routine, it was great to see that they spent so much time on reading, both to themselves and as a class. Often with a class reading, there were comprehension questions to follow. This gave the students to better their understanding and knowledge in gathering information from a text. Writing was also another positive part of their literacy routine. The teacher and I often had class discussions about what were going to be writing about and then modelled an example with the help of the class.

PROMPT 2

Whilst on placement I was lucky enough to assist in putting together a word wall, this class display was based around the words the students came up with after a discussion they had had in science. Their science lesson was based upon the making of bread, so their word wall consisted of words such as: multi-grain, yeast, rotti bread, white bread, etc.

The words were placed on a Velcro wall so that words could be added each time they thought of a new one. It was interesting to witness ideas pop into their heads at random parts of the day and it was great for them to be able to add to their words and ideas in their own time.

PROMPT 1

When considering my own literature experience, I think of my grade four class being read the classic novel ‘Treasure Island’ by Robert Louis Stevenson. We all sat in silence as our teacher read us the story of Jim Hawkins and Billy Bones, we were also encouraged to draw the images that came into our heads. This time was always enjoyable for us a middle years class, as it was very relaxing and often took place in the afternoon - a wind down part of the day.

Over the course of my life, I have had a variation of people read to me. It is something that I have always enjoyed, especially my grandma and my mum when I was younger. I loved the book ‘The Velveteen Rabbit’ when I was a child, and it was always very special when my grandma or mum read this to my brother and I.
