X-Float agaligo studio

Aside from the lush, mountainous landscape and famous River Kwai Bridge, Kanchanaburi is well known for its floating houses and rafts. Floating on the river, these distinctive structures greatly differentiate Kanchanaburi from any other provinces in Thailand. X-Float is a creation that enhances the fascination of the River Kwai’s floating houses with a different paradigm of design and comfort. The unique accommodation is designed in addition to the Project X2 River Kwai Resort.

X-Float’s design resembles a volumetric evolution of a raft, a primitive man-made floating platform, from 2 dimensional to 3 dimensional – to a livable unit. This makes X-Float a crossbreed of vernacular and modern architecture.

MODERN HOUSE IV: HOUSE VI

Prior to designing House VI, Peter Eisenman was a paper architect, best known as the theorist of postfunctionalism.

Eisenman generated the plan for his first building by negating the high modernist dictum “form follows function,” which sublimated all aspects of the design process to a utopian, ultimate use. Function therefore was eliminated from the project criteria, as was its antithesis, ornament.

Instead, Eisenman manipulated four intersecting planes, bifurcating, overlapping and interpenetrating them, with no reference to use or habitability or any teleology at all, until a complex of forms and spaces emerged. The resultant structure was the plan, which, Eisemman stated, was “a record of the design process,” a purely formal and intellectual object that allegorized its own making.

House VI became a house only after the clients moved in. Due to the nature of the design, its “rooms” are the residual spaces between planes, shaped only by the process of shaping them. The residents were obliged to adapt to the structure, accommodating anomalous columns, inconvenient partitions, and unexpected drops as they could. In response to charges that Eisenman’s reified abstraction was unliveable, the owners published an account of their experience living there, proclaiming their love of the “poetic” house.

House VI was listed on then Connecticut real estate market in 2013 for $1.4 million.

Art Stable in Seattle, Washington - Olson Kundig Architects

Art Stable is an urban infill project in Seattle’s rapidly developing South Lake Union neighborhood. Built on the site of a former horse stable, the seven-story mixed-use building carries its working history into the future with highly adaptable live/work units.

Both front and back elevations of the building are active. The alley-facing façade features an 80-foot, 5-inch tall hinge topped by a davit crane and five steel-clad, hand-cranked doors that cover nearly a third of the façade. The system references a warehousing tradition in how it moves oversize objects into the building. On the street side, large hinged windows open to provide natural ventilation throughout the units.

The Hedonist Nuno Pimenta + Frederico Martins

THE HEDONIST was selected to be one of Hotel Shabby Shabby rooms for Theather der Welt in Mannheim – the most influential theater festival in Germany. Hotel Shabby Shabby was curated by Raumlaborberlin in partnership with the festival and consisted on the design and construction of 20 hotel rooms located in unexpected public spaces of Mannheim that should provide a unique experience to their guests. These rooms should be built only with recycled, reused or recyclable materials and should not exceed the budget of 250€.

THE HEDONIST was located at Neckarspitze, the exact place where the river Rhine and Neckar converge, a place with incredible 360º views that combine nature with industrial night lights and big ships passing by. The room was fully booked for the duration of the festival even before its construction completion.
