“Probably The Lost Boys. Super cliche 80s vampire movie, but oh god do I love it. One of my all time favorite movies in general as well.”
“That’s a good one! I haven’t seen it in forever and a day, though.” She laughed, “You’re new here, right? I’m Eden.”
She shrugged. “When I think Halloween, I think Friday the 13th, Nightmare On Elm Street, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Lost Boys, Dracula….. shit like that. Maybe that’s just me though.”
Eden nodded. Scary movies like that had never really been her niche, but she could understand the appreciation. “I get that. I don’t think we’re allowed to watch all that gore shit here though, because you’ve got people that can be triggered by it pretty bad, and obviously we try and avoid all that here. What’s your favorite halloween movie, like of all time?”
Another smile was cracked at her joke, though it wasn’t the best joke he’d heard. It was, however, an adequate descriptor for how the patients in the institution felt about their admittance; it was just short of prison. “That’s a long time to be in a place,” he said, deciding to take on a more casual tone rather than continue with his usual dialogue. “I’ve only been here… oh, I don’t know. A few weeks at most. I can’t imagine being locked up in here for as long as you have.” The idea seemed deplorable and while he hoped desperately that he wouldn’t end up there that long, part of him knew it was likely.
“Actually bein’ here ain’t the worst part,” She began with a slight shrug of her shoulders. The place wasn’t terrible -- it was better than most places that she could have been shipped off to, but it was the attitude that came with living there that was harder to stomach than anything they were fed in that God-awful cafeteria. “Gettin’ used to this place, though, and letting yourself think this is normal is the hard part. There are people that’ve been here for years, even some lifers, too.” Eden sighed. She could feel herself slipping out of her good mood, so she forced a smile to try and bring herself back up. “You know, I don’t even know what movies are in the theatre or what new music is on the radio these days! That’s the real tragedy, if you ask me.”

“Good job they’re kept well hidden then” Christina said, raising her eyebrows slightly “Don’t worry I shouldn’t need to use them”
“Can you tell me what this is about? I’m not sick or anythin’.”Â
“Well that’s disappointing. Not even any good Halloween movies?” She asked raising her pierced eyebrow.
“Kiss my ass, those movies rock.”
Finn had looked away from her at this point, training his gaze down at his hands, which he fiddled with out of habit. It wasn’t a nervous one, not really – just something to focus on other than the horrific intrusions that liked to plaster themselves on the back of his eyelids. “Yes, that’s correct. I’m assuming you’re one as well?” As he spoke, he lifted his eyes to look at her again while he waited for his answer.
“Yep, inmate number seven-five-three-one... do we have patient numbers here?” Eden knew that her joke wasn’t funny, and she felt marginally embarrassed once she had said it. She refrained from rolling her eyes, deciding that would look strange. “No, but yeah, I’m a patient. Been here about... four months? Five? Somethin’ like that.” She shrugged, “So, I know most of the ins and outs of this place, so if you want a tour of good old Home for the Helpless I’m your gal!”
“It must be, I’ve never observed anyone making better ones.” Not that he would know, as he rarely chose to eavesdrop on the conversations of the people in the building – they just didn’t seem to pique his interest any. He lowered his hand back down to his side, still smiling slightly. “I don’t believe we have. It’s a pleasure to meet you Eden, I’m Finn.”
Eden, on the contrary, eavesdropped on loads of conversations here. More often than not, when she ate in the dining hall she would listen in on what people were discussing -- generally different complaints about the staff or other patients, love interests, the usual small talk about the hum drum life in a mental institution. “The pleasure’s all mine, Finn! I’m guessing you’re a patient, right?”Â

It was rare for a smile of his to last longer than a few seconds, but somehow she’d gotten one to. The idea of being able to blame and punish someone for forcing them to survive off of the shit they were offered as food was nice, to say in the least. “Sounds like a fair deal,” he replied, chuckling as he locked his pinky finger with her.
“Y’know, I think this is about the best plan that’s ever been devised in this cafeteria!” Wiggling her wrist to shake pinkies as she giggled, thankful for a break from the usual unresponsive crowd she met around the home. “I’m sorry, but I don’t think we’ve met before, have we? I’m Eden.”Â
The small smile on his face widened into something more akin to a grin at her statement, though he too glanced around to make sure that nobody of importance had heard. “At the very least,” he agreed, nodding. “Pizza, so long as it isn’t made my the cook who prepares the garbage we’re regularly made to eat, would be wonderful.”
“I’ll tell ya’ what...” She began, setting her hands on her hips, “You beat up the cook, I’ll make us a pizza.” With a laugh she held up her right hand with her little finger upright. “I pinky swear!”
“A revolution would certainly make things more interesting, wouldn’t it?” he asked, cracking a small smile. “Whoever decided serving such a monstrosity should be subjected to all of that and more.”
“Vive la revolution!” She laughed, looking over her shoulder to make sure no staff members had heard her. The last thing Eden needed was to be back in solitary. “At the very least, we deserve an apology and some real food. Like a pizza or something!”Â
“Oh? What comes next? Do we bathe in the blood of our vanquished enemies?” She smirked.
Eden rolled her eyes so hard that it gave her a headache. She had met plenty of patients like this before -- people that tried too hard to appear nonchalantly and effortlessly fucked up, thinking that it may give them some kind of reputation of being a badass. Whatever small semblance of patience Eden had before this moment was gone. She quickly sobered her expression and changed to a straight face. “No, we burn this place to the ground with everyone in it. Including you.” She finished with the creepiest giggle that she could manage. “No, but really... all we do around here is hang out with that over-excited nurse and watch those old Goosebumps movies from middle school.”Â
“If someone were to try and pass this off as food out there, I’d shove it down their gullet and see if they’d be so eager to sell it after eating it themselves – would do it here, if I could catch whoever cooks this,” he replied, though it was clear he wasn’t being totally serious, even if he meant it on some level. “All terribly scathing reviews, of course.”
“I think you’re on to something... a revolution! We can find out who made this cake full of lemon flavored sink cleaner and we can give them a kick in the pants and a stern talkin’ to.”Â
Danny nodded slowly before saying…
“Very cool, indeed. Unless you’re the virgin.” Eden responded dryly. She felt her mind racing with thousands of ideas of other things to say to this person. Was this all that she had left to do in here -- just mocking other patients with blindingly insane plans? “But what comes next is the best part.”Â
Finn had dumped his own tray only moments before, though he was far from satiated. The food provided was just too disgusting to stomach and so he felt that suffering a bit of hunger was easier than trying to swallow whatever they’d – wrongly – decided was edible. “I’m inclined to agree,” he replied, looking over as a woman dropped her own plate in the garbage. “No need for apologies. Whatever they might be trying to pass off as food more than excuses complaints.” Admittedly, he did find the fact that she’d decided to vent at him of all people to be irritating, but he tried to be nice about it all the same. Being rude very rarely got him anywhere.
“Can you even imagine someone trying to feed this to you in the real world, like at a restaurant or something?” She asked, with the slightest smile on her face. “Think of the yelp reviews we can leave good ol’ Home for the Helpless Cafeteria when we get out of here.”Â
