For a while now, I’ve been having an internal struggle on what it means when people are called to rest from ministry. And today, I ran into the moment Jesus feeds the five thousand. It’s something I’ve never seen before. It starts with this: Jesus permissing his disciples to rest.
“The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.” Mark 6:30-31
Jesus knows how human we are. He knows we grow tired and weary. He knows we need to rest and to eat. But then the story leads to this:
“When he [Jesus] went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things.” Mark 6:34
While his disciples are resting, Jesus see’s a need and he keeps on moving. Jesus will keep moving even when His people are resting. Because the reality is this: Jesus’ mission is not contingent on us. He wants to partner with us, but he does not need us.
How is this shown? The story goes on to tell us that when it grows late the disciples told Jesus to stop and to send the people away so they can get something to eat. This is the moment Jesus offers up his partnership, he says, “YOU give them something to eat.” (Mark 6:37).
And then what does Jesus do? He performs a miracle. He feeds FIVE THOUSAND people with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish.
Rest, Jesus knows we need it! I know I’ve needed it, and will need it again. But man, when Jesus asks for partnership even in rest and we obey? Imagine the possibility that can happen!
