Why I don't like the conservative view on abortion
From a Christian standpoint, I can understand conservatism disagreeing with it considering I also am one. There’s a verse in the Bible (Jeremiah 1:5) that states, “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.” And there’s also other similar verses that address similar points.
I also do not agree with abortion. However, my problem with the conservative view of abortion is not the religious stance on it, but rather their outward and surface political stance that it does take.
Conservatives rarely talk about pregnancy complications and how they plan to help women who go through them. They don’t even acknowledge pregnancy complications. And if they do, they’ll say, “Oh, but it doesn’t happen that much.”
Unfortunately, pregnancy complications are a lot more common than people would originally think, which is also another reason as to why a lot of women today are now opting out of having children. Because more often than not, our society gives them very little support, women are shamed for being pregnant outside of marriage even when it was outside of their control (such as being raped), women often don’t get help and in fact, there’s a growing trend of men abandoning the women they impregnate. The trend is so widespread that we joke about it. “Oh, dad left to get milk and never came back.”
These aren't strawmen that women are pulling out a hat, these are actual things that are happening.
1 in 3 women are sexually assaulted globally, so the concept of a woman being pregnant against her will is unfortunately not out of the norm and does have a high probability of happening. It’s just not reported. Only 37-57% of all sexual assaults GLOBALLY are reported. It keeps happening because there’s no punishment.
That’s why I have a difficult time truly trusting the statistics that say the majority of people getting abortions are only doing it because they just wanna have sex with no consequences. I’m not denying that it could be a possibility. But I am saying that due to the VAST underreporting of rape, there’s no real way for me to know what to believe and what not to believe when it comes to that. For all we know, that rate of raped women becoming impregnated could be MUCH higher since there is such a VAST underreporting.
The reason why rape victims don’t report their experiences is because they know for a fact there’s a very small chance of their attacker actually facing consequences for their actions. And when they do provide evidence, judges are able to act like it doesn’t matter and set the person free anyway. Why would women continue to use a system that has consistently shown it has no interest in helping them?
Even if forced pregnancy wasn’t a problem, the medical industry still has a discriminatory way in how it handles women’s pain.
In the grand scheme of things and in terms of history, we have only recently gotten out of a system that automatically writes women off as ‘hysterical’ and now listen to their pain or issues—but even then, there’s still countless of stories of women who had complications in their bodies—not just in pregnancy—due to the fact that their doctors just would not listen to them when they told them they’re in pain or suspected something was wrong. It was only until 1993 did women in America actually start to be medically studied.
IT HAS ONLY BEEN 32 YEARS SINCE THE MEDICAL INDUSTRY THOUGHT, "Hmm, maybe women need their own stuff." ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?
When you have it all down, it is any wonder why women in this day and age don’t want to bear children anymore when there seems to be little perceived benefit for themselves and the child involved?
However, conservatism doesn’t want to talk about these aspects of the conversation because they know they can’t defend it. And they can’t defend it because they don’t actually care about the women and children. And there’s no real way to defend NOT caring about something that serious. If they did, they’d be pushing for better healthcare and environments for women to be mothers rather than just forcing pregnant women to suck it up and take care of themselves.
They’d be advocating to make sure that rapists AUTOMATICALLY get death sentences regardless of how long ago they committed the crime—and that rapists should not have access to the children they forcibly put inside of a woman should she choose to go through with, along with making sure he pays the woman he raped child support until the kid is 18. They’d advocate to make better environments where it’s not easy for a rapist to get away. They’d make environments where men are strongly criticized for abandoning the mother(s) of their children.
If they did care, they’d try to push for a much better foster care system than we have now—where children in foster care have a high chance of being physically or sexually abused. They’d also try to make it illegal for minors to be married and/or have sex with adults—regardless of parental consent—and that if parents do consent, that it’s considered child trafficking (because in some states of America, an adult can marry a child if they have consent from the parents which ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww---).
If they really cared, they’d care to make environments where women don’t feel sexual pressure from men. But conservatism addresses NONE of these things—nor do they advocate for any TRUE change that’d actually help reach that climate besides pressuring young people to get married for the sake of getting married.
Because of the fact that conservatism wants to get to a place where abortion can’t be practiced, yet they’re not advocating for changes to make pregnancy and/or to make the societal climate easier for pregnant women, that tells us what most people already knew—that conservatism doesn’t like women (shocker).
They don’t care if you get ill, they don’t care if you miscarry, they don’t care if the child is stillborn, dies in the womb—or if YOU, the MOTHER, dies as a result of the pregnancy complications. It’s easy for men to want children when they’re not the ones who literally risk death just to bring another person here.
So considering the fact that conservatism more often than not will discard or gaslight people on these concerns, it’s no wonder no one wants to listen to someone who has less than supporting views on abortion. Because their views on abortion aren’t ACTUALLY biblical, they’re purely authoritarian and based on business.
And the nerve conservatism has to say they care about children when their actions prove otherwise is disgusting to me. If you’re not going to advocate to make the world a better place for pregnant women, why would women want to pop out more children for the world we live in? It makes no sense.
While liberalism might want women to be public property, conservatism wants women to be private property. At the end of the day, they both still view women as property. I will keep saying this till the day I die.
