* PLOTTED STARTER @edenwept··
toes protected by worn leather made his presence known, a loud knockknockknock filling the hallway as his boot met with the doorframe before him. while it was well known that eric was a pre-morning riser, often leaving the safety of their community before most had even begun to stir ( if only to avoid conversation ) even he would admit to the fact that this particular wake-up call had come at an obscenely early hour ; a fact made even worse by the temperature drop the area had experienced during the night. that was one thing they conveniently left out of the sales pitch when folks went further south to scout or recruit sure, the scenery was wonderful and they could offer safety, but when the true cold came on, the kind that one could only experience at high elevations, even the toughest found themselves second guessing their choice to join the crew.
❝ they need you downstairs, new girl. ❞ he called, giving the door one last tap. with a steaming mug held in each hand eric took a sip of the one he’d claimed as his own, yawning as soon as the dangerously hot liquid had left his mouth. if all went well and whatever they needed gloria for could be taken care of quickly, eric’s hope was that both of them could get back to their respective rooms and catch a few more hours of sleep before the day actually began. it was a long shot, but not altogether impossible. ❝ …if you’re waiting for me to go away it isn’t gonna’happen. ❞
“ --- huh?! ” gloria awoke with a start, unkempt blonde curls falling across her face in a sheet to obscure her vision. he had interrupted the loveliest dream. it takes her a moment to remember where she is, and just who it is barging into her room: bearing gifts. “ oh, eric! gosh, y’scared me half to death! ” she holds a hand to her chest to steady her heart; but she’s laughing, too --- don’t worry. gloria doesn’t take long to recover. “ nothin’ too serious, i hope? ” gloria wonders aloud, swinging her feet off the side of the bed and shoving them clumsily into boots. “ get rid’a you? now, where’s the sense in that! who else around this place is bringin’ me coffee? ” she teases, spying the extra cup in his hand. gloria certainly hoped it was for her, anyway --- she was parched. sleep still hung in her eyes. she teetered over to find herself in the mirror, making a brief attempt at fixing her hair and appearing slightly more presentable. society might’ve been long dead, but gloria had no plans of letting herself go. beauty is next to godliness, as her mother liked to say. and while beauty wasn’t always achievable nowadays, she could at least strive to be neat. “ gosh, i look like hell this mornin’ --- pardon my mouth. what time is it? ” gloria asked, peering out the window to give herself a clue. no matter what time it was, one thing was evident from the dark circles hanging under her eyes: she hadn’t gotten enough sleep. then again, who could claim they had?
HERHOLY.
god doesn’t speak to her in ways so simple as sound. he presses in feeling. he halts the winds at just the right time. darkens sky with cloud &. thunder when she fails, pours sunshine when duty is upheld. condemned a coincidence to the non-believers, nothing less than SIGNS to the heaven-ventures. she donning peach cheeks pulls from her something just like it —– feeling ! someone to hesitate for. a woman so sure, in stature &. in word, does not falter. but here she observes, active eyes yearning for clues. hungry for them. famished gaze closes in one familiar hieroglyph above the rest. gloria wears it on her chest and why—- oh why didn’t god’s favoured child notice it sooner? madre doesn’t work in rules of three. one sign was enough, two is plenty. hand fishes in her pocket, returning with a key to unlock cell. where the door once barred her in, madre’s hand hangs, palm-up, luring the mouse out of this trap ( &. into the next one ). having found a bond, the leader of this world leads damsel through dungeon, returning to a light where madre does not answer quizzical gazes. she does none but lead the lamb the astray, finding the night air far easier to swallow than a suffocated room’s. that bench by the tired fire is free for the two of them, alone. do you see now? that madre takes what she wants, holds it in her hand, and does as she pleases? as long as the sun’s in the direction, she can hold it over god. “ gloria, will you tell me: what is it you have heard about eden? “
oh no, oh no! panic floods gloria’s wearied features. there’s no promise of freedom in being sprung from her cage; more likely - she wagers - she is headed for a pit of spikes, or to be marched off a dock into the sea. demise, in short, is all gloria anticipated waited for her beyond these prison walls. she gulps her grief. had she spoke out of line? said too much? looked the woman too long in the eyes? gloria didn’t know. she considers apologising, but finds fear has stolen her voice. instead, she rises silently: gaze glued to the ground and trailing behind her like a dog on a leash --- not that madre needed one. the lamb doesn’t stray far from her shepherd. a desperate bid for escape isn’t even considered, let alone attempted: gloria does as she’s told, without question. some things never change. she focuses instead on her footing, unstable at the best of times, but nearing that of a newly dropped fawn, at present. one in front of the other. frantic thoughts and fears were quieted (for the most part) by exhaustion, the remainder of her energy was committed to keeping her upright, rather than afraid. a brief vacation from dread. but they cannot march forever. when madre finally arrives at a stop, gloria’s expression puzzles. it wasn’t the firing squad she had anticipated, but rather: a dwindling fire and an open seat. it was almost ... inviting. or it certainly would’ve been, if she hadn’t been fearing for her life. the question raises the hair on the back of her neck. it required thinking, a task laborious enough for gloria in her current state, but more nerve-wracking than that: it required remembering. now that, she especially did not enjoy. gloria doesn’t look at the woman, instead her blue gaze finds the fire. “ i ... i don’t know. ” she fidgets nervously, worried she’s going to say the wrong thing all over again. gloria was good at that. “ people ... people say all sorts of things. --- ... not that i’ve spoken to all that many folks, as of late. ” she admits, a small, nervous laugh falling from her lips. she doesn’t want to lie. “ b-but, um ... it’s not --- it’s not real nice, what they say. ” that was putting it mildly. as mildly as gloria could.
VULGRE.
now, who was she to turn down such a sweet gift? no ---- gloria’s mother had raised her better than that. besides - and she doesn’t tell anyone this, but - she enjoys his company. he’s certainly kind enough to her, new as she is to their bustling little community --- for which gloria is grateful to now call her home. she understand little: of what came before, of the origin of ire he drew. but gloria doesn’t ask questions she doesn’t want the answers to. she’s a girl long since trained to bite her tongue. curiosity killed the cat. instead, she turns to him with a smile: warm and inviting as a summer afternoon. “ i can’t believe you remembered! ... you’re a real sweetheart, y’know that? ” she gushes earnestly. how bad could he be, really? then again, gloria wasn’t known for being a stellar judge of character. understatement. “ ... right now?! alright! ” she makes little attempt to conceal her excitement. it takes her a few tries to get it right, but gloria manages to get the old record singing: breathing life and music into the room. her heart swells, turning to face him again with a fresh sparkle in her eye. “ this --- this is real special. i don’t know how to thank you. ” anything gloria could’ve offered in return would’ve felt inadequate. the night is dark and full of terrors, but for this evening at least: she would have music. what’s more wonderful than that?
SAILEDSUNSET.
SHANE WAS RELUCTANT TO LET HER HELP HIM AND HE WAS NOT BIG ON TRUSTING ANYONE TO AID HIM BUT DID HE HAVE MUCH FOR OPTIONS. honestly he was quite close to passing out, and he was starting to sweat so that was definitely a problem. he couldn’t keep up this way and he knew it. hell his new found company obviously knew it too. letting her proceed to bandage him up was certainly questionable because he didn’t know her from eve and thus trust was hardly a word he was about to throw around with her. she wanted to help and he needed the damn help that was it, that was all this was going to be. “just how qualified are you to be doing this?” he spoke as his knee shifted against the counter and as his blood stained fingers slipped away he had plunked down onto his thigh and rear before he was moving to lay back slowly his head falling lightly against the ground while dirty calloused fingers were scrapping at the rummaged store that was just a shell these days. then again find a building or place that wasn’t right? everything went to shit, and his current situation just reminded him how bad…. stabbed by his own friend, then again only because he stabbed first. was that better? shit situations could really make you wonder how far you’d cracked. rick just didn’t understand, he was a liability…. the group needed to change him or they’d be joining him sooner or later. focus, man. “you gonna end up making this worse then it is or something if you don’t have a half baked idea of what you’re doing.” he spoke not that she wasn’t capable but easier to trust your life in your own hands then a strangers of course.

her heart rattles her ribs like fists around bars of a cage, but her hands do not shake. it’s the first time they’ve been put to good use in months --- years, even. tending an infected wound wasn’t exactly like riding a bike, but similar principals applied: keep your hands steady and your eyes on the road. gloria laughs, breathy and nervous. “ i --- i’m a nurse. i used to be ... a nurse. ” once upon a distant lifetime, that is. it feels strange to say aloud, after so long --- in fact, it feels strange to be making any kind of conversation at all. relieved to have him laid down, gloria busies herself with his injury. she’s been trained to maintain her composure, but she can’t help the small exclamation of concern that slips from her lips when she reveals his wound. “ oh ... ” gloria murmurs, the worry ill-concealed on her face. it takes concentrated effort to regain her sunny disposition. “ it’s --- it doesn’t look all that bad! ” she lies, hoping it’s the kind she’ll be forgiven for. considering the circumstances, gloria wagers god will be willing to look the other way. “ ... nasty cut, is all! ” she downplays again, cringing at the makeshift stitching. it looked deep --- painful. she glances nervously at his expression, attempting to gauge a reaction. it’s the first time she sees his face; sees a person staring back at her. it’s an unfamiliar feeling. “ gosh, look at me forgettin’ my manners! my name’s gloria. is there somethin’ i can call you, mister? ” she makes a feeble attempt at distraction; for his sake, as well as her own. pleasantries meant little at the end of the world, but her poor nerves were in desperate need of casual conversation.
HERHOLY.
she’s a rabbit freed. snare no match for the seed of hope planted by clumsy green-thumb. &. like primrose devastated in winter, she’s the flower in spring. all wide-eyed and blooming. complete sentences are suddenly possible, a tongue furiously alive. the woman spends a moment in watch, a way she lives a majority of her life, now. only when she’s sure it’s a seed she wants to water does she deliver. “ darling, i would give my life for my children, but i simply cannot recite each of their names. “ she doesn’t know. it’s hardly the flatline of hope. madre allows gloria to breathe the dismay, before throwing crumbs into the lake. feeding. “ for you, i’ll make sure it’s looked into. okay? you have my word. “ equipped with gentle smile, hands still on the rod, reeling in. “ you won’t have to be alone. not ever again, gloria throne. not unless you want to be. “
brief disappointment flutters across delicate features: crestfallen. it is not the resounding ‘ yes ’ gloria craves, nor the prime-time reunion with her husband she had dreamed up in her head. but her flame is fanned --- hope residing in the woman’s word, promised to gloria. for me. she nods, appreciatively. she wants to press the subject further, but decides against it --- pushing the vigour back down her throat (for now). she would be no use to teddy if she wound up dead, after all. the promise buckled her. gaze dropped again, although this time her expression breaks to a smile: lips parting to exhale a faint laugh verging on delirium. “ --- nobody wants to be alone, ” gloria whispers; her smile evaporating as quickly as it had appeared. when blue eyes return to madre, she’s somber again: lids pool with tears that don’t spill onto her cheeks. “ but ... i am. i am alone. ” her voice is small, crushed under the weight of her words. a trembling hand raises to fiddle with her cross --- the small gold charm long-since turned brassy. she had god, of course, but gloria didn’t suppose he counted. after all, he had an awful lot on his plate these days.
SAILEDSUNSET.
HIS GAZE NARROWED AND DESPITE THE BRIEF MOMENT OF BLURRY VISION HE SETTLED FOR THE WOMAN NOT BEING A THREAT. his hand drew back from his stomach and he looked over the blood stained skin of his hand before he nodded in agreement, “no shit.” he offered as his hand fell back at the gun proceeded to fall against his inner thigh and he let his head fall back against the counter he was currently propped against. he took a slow breath and looked down to himself as he grabbed up towards the counter with blood fingers attempting to get himself up a little more. he let out a groan and as his fingers slipped he dropped catching himself on his knee causing him to curse out as he dropped his hand towards his stomach as he knelt there. “there ain’t nothin’ left here. may as well move on.” he grunted taking a second to regain himself as he inhaled hissing through his teeth as they grinded together and he looked to his hand. “don’t happen to have any bandages?” he added. he didn’t want her help but christ if he didn’t need to ignore his pride over the possibility of supplies.
fear begs her to flee, but her feet are rooted in place. he’s hurt. that thought alone is louder than anything else in gloria’s head --- more demanding, even, than the gun in his hand. she used to help hurt people, once. she gasps as he stumbles: her hands dropping from the air to cover her mouth (agape) . he’s the first living person she’s seen in months, and now he’s going to die in front of her. no ... no he’s not. gloria drops her pack to the ground, digging through it to retrieve a key. “ w-wait here, okay? just --- don’t move, please. ” she begs of him; not for her benefit, but for his. she doubts he has much choice in the matter, regardless. suddenly, it feels like she’s back in the emergency room --- like no time has passed at all. he was right, of course: there wasn’t anything left ... not on the shelves. gloria returns to him as promised, bringing with her everything she had found worth salvaging when she had first stumbled upon the place. it’s hardly a hospital’s worth of supplies, but gloria could make it work. she had to. “ c’mon mister, ” she urges, a cautious hand extending to help him down. “ just --- just lay down, for me. you’re gonna be just fine! ” it’s a bold promise, but she makes it anyway. who knows what he’s hiding under there? for all gloria knows, it could even be a bite.
