Having a boyfriend with anxiety physically hurts. I want to be with him all the time and I also never want to be with him. It’s like a Chinese finger trap. It’s all or nothing.

I am not as compassionate as maybe I should be but I don’t understand the disease. I try but always say the wrong thing. I feel like our relationship is doomed. He needs someone who can be there for him... I am too weak myself to lift him up. I think that I need to be with someone who is stronger than me and has less emotions. I’ve always wanted an emotional lover but the anxiety is different... It puts a metaphorical brick wall between us. Even when I am with him, it feels like we are apart. It’s beginning to feel like business trips for work are better for ourselves...

We used to be so happy all of the time. For the first year we never fought. He could do nothing wrong. And he had anxiety then, but it didn’t hurt us. I would wake up in the morning and he would be crying and I would console him. I feared he was going to kill himself, so I told his mom. She put him in therapy and, again, we were fine.

This, though, seems impossible to fix. We are always fighting over the same things, and he just falls into a state of despair and I just give up. I make everything worse. These days, I’m better off saying nothing. Even if he’s shaking, crying, slamming doors and cabinets, storming around the house... it’s easier to say nothing than draw attention to it. If I do, he just says, “I can’t ever do anything right!”

He leaves for a month in two days. I wonder how many hours we will spend in separate rooms just trying to pass the time?

Why is it so hard to communicate with you sometimes? A lot of the time. It just feels like I always say the wrong things and when you go quiet I go, “What’s wrong?” and you say, “Nothing,” and when you don’t shake it, I keep asking until I become the answer. I guess it all boils down to the fact that, as a child, I had to learn to pick up cues from my mom to see if she was either (a) having a bipolar episode or (b) drunk or (c) both. And, over time, doing this with the person you spend your days with becomes second nature. When there are laughs and there are deep sighs and gasps, that little sensor inside of me that detects certain peculiarities just takes a break… Everything is as normal as it sounds. But when there’s quiet, I have to wonder why. My life has no quiet; my brain is constantly spitting out whatever it can wrap together. When there is silence, I’m left to contemplate what I am missing, what I’m not hearing. We share everything. Why can’t we just share the spotlight?

hey liz, feel like I'm living through some of your experiences years after you have. Had a boy who was my first everything and just didn't love me. It's been months but I'll miss him so deeply sometimes and hold myself back from reaching out. Hang in there, girl. I thought I would never get over my ex. I thought I would always be a slave to feelings that I could not control, could not rid myself of, and could not understand. And now I’ve been in a relationship for three and a half years, and I don’t think about my ex. You will find someone else, and they will care about you more than your ex ever did. Trust me on this.

my boyfriend and I sometimes struggle to be on the same page when it comes to comforting- often i just want to vent and don’t need advice, whereas validation confuses him and he wants a plan of action

to counter this, we’ve come up with a system where we ask: “do you want advice, empathy, both or neither?” 

if it’s just advice, i know to go straight to action points and not spend time on fluffy words 

if it’s just empathy, he knows i want to be reassured and comforted and that’s all

if it’s both, it’s time for advice that recognises how hard the situation is and is perhaps gentler in nature

if it’s neither, just a hug is really good

i recommend trying to use this in your lives! it makes sure you’re giving and getting what you need, and reduces the risk of resentment or similar
