Amazing Vendor at Gencon!
My brother and I attended our first Gencon this year and it was a great experience. There was one particular set of events that made it a trip I will always remember. Not something that was unbelievably bad or outlandish, but a genuine act of kindness and pure awesomeness.
Let me set the stage for this story… Being our first Gencon, we decided to check out the vendor area slightly later than when the doors first opened. If you have seen the video’s you will know why we waited. With no real plan or direction we entered the vendor hall about an hour after the doors opened and began working our way through the mass of people. Checking out different game booths, cosplay vendors, Magic the Gathering stuff of all sorts. We then made our way to the artist alley to check out some of the cool artwork that we have seen on MtG cards. My brother happened to find some tokens from one of his favorite artists, I forget the name.
While working our way through a crowd of people we came upon Wyrmwood Quality Gaming supplies.
They had a variety of interesting wooden dice trays and deck boxes. My brother was really interested in the deck boxes because he was gifted an Aaron Cain deck box and wanted to see what Wyrmwood had to offer.
During the conversation with Douglas and Edward…
… During the conversation, my brother mentioned that he had an Aaron Cain deck box and Douglas and Edward were interested in seeing one in person. They had heard about his work and wanted to see the differences from his work to their work.
Unfortunately my brother didn’t have it with him, but said he would bring it with him the next day.
Fast forward to “The next day”. We had scheduled a Commander Cabana event in the morning to kill time until the vendor hall opened. My brother had his Aaron Cain deck box with him and it had one of his Commander decks in it.
It looked very similar to this…
After the event ended, we decided to get some lunch and then do some more shopping in the vendor hall. It was around 2pm and I mentioned that we needed to stop by Wyrmwood and show them the deck box. We made our way through the hall and over to the Wyrmwood booth.. We saw Douglas and my brother started digging for the Aaron Cain deck box… There was a slight panic in his eyes when the deck box with $$$ commander deck was not in his bag. He double checked his back, he knew he had it with him because the played the deck earlier that morning…… OH no, he didn’t remember if he picked it up off the table when we were done with the event in the morning!
Here is where the cool part happens! Douglas asked my brother what kind of money he had in the deck, my brother way underestimated the value, He reached over and grabbed a beautiful Wenge Deck box and handed it to my brother. Douglas said, “I know it won’t replace the cards you lost but hopefully it will soften the blow”.
My brother and I were shocked that this guy could see the sense of loss and just make it hurt a little less. We told Douglas that we were going the check the lost and found, with the outside chance someone might have turned it in. He said if we find the deck, to come back and return the gift. We both found this to be completely fair. In this day and age, he probably could have just counted on the fact that he would never see us again regardless.
We went back to the Magic area and asked about the lost and found. We were told where to go and who we should speak to.
AMAZINGLY someone turned in the deck box with all of the cards in it! Sometimes people are awesome.
We went back to Wyrmwood, returned the gift, and let them check out the Aaron Cain box. Then my brother purchased one of their boxes, because, in his words, “I have to”.
I think we should support a place like Wyrmwood with our patronage for being that cool.
