Albert Einstein was right when he said he “feared the day technology would surpass our human interaction because we would have a generation of idiots.” It almost feels as we are overdosing in technology; seeking the newest apps, the newest gadgets, the dumbest videos all while jeopardizing our human ability to interact. We have for the most part forgotten what its like to carry a conversation over dinner with family or friends or to talk to your loved one about your day. Instead we are always on our phones on social media trying to learn the new trending slang word or the newest gossip. We are mostly with our noses or brains stuck in a gadget to use our brain to learn to new things or be polite to our humankind.

“We are the future and how are we going to succeed if we cannot communicate properly.” - Alexia Badillo (pg. 3)

Alexia states that if there is a lack of communication between humans we will fail as a race. If we are not all speaking properly or at the same intellectual level our society can suffer greatly because while some of us might think we are coming across one way to our peers they might interpret it differently and can open us up failure.

Although for those of us that still grew up in an era where technology was not as prevalent but still being born, we were still a generation that was brought up on books, writing on paper, and learning to do everything on what is considered now as the “old fashioned” way. Because we were able to do this we still have a great solid foundation on which to base our literacy. This means that if ever technology was not useful for the most part we all still know how to do research through books and write with a paper and pen. However, the newer generations are being brought up on nothing but technology. Starting in pre-kinder our children are being handed computers to do their school work and come home to games and movies and other technology. It scares me to know that these kids won’t know what to do or make of themselves if technology ever fails them.

Our human intellect is declining due to our inclination to consistently participate in social media and technology that feed our brain useless information keeping us from actually learning causing a decline in human intelligence. The very language that helps us communicate and express ourselves to each other is suffering because we have learned to make education less of a priority than the funny video or the new slang. Desensitizing our human ability to communicate with each other is leaving us in a position where human interaction will no longer be needed and exposes us to become a civilization of nonexistent personalities just bodies, or shells of what we once used to be.

As I mentioned before Lessner and Craig provide several options to help us become better, stronger writers. Freewriting is the first option offered. In this option you are free to write what you want in the least professional matter, the idea is to get your brain thinking and expanding on an idea that will produce several good points to get you going on a paper.

Lessner and Craig let us know that invention activities are a good way to help us start developing a paper. They provide us with more than just one activity because what works for one person might not work for another but they are all trying to serve the same purpose, to help develop us into better writers.

As you read, get in the habit of asking rhetorical questions about the composition of texts. This will further guide your pre-writing process of brainstorming and frame decisions for how you might compose your own texts. Freewriting can be an initial invention exercise that begins your composing process” - Lessner and Craig (Pg. 131)

What Lessner and Craig are stating is that when we ask profound questions of the material we are reading we are likely to get an outcome of good answers that will help our writing become better.

The idea behind reading rhetorically is that we are able to use our brain to not only process the information that we are reading but to question it as well. We become inquisitive on what powers the mind behind the reading. We begin to questions why things were written, to what purpose, what audience and helps us to become better writers ourselves as we start looking for the same perspectives in our own work. In this reading Lessner and Craig provide multiple ways to help us develop writing by asking us to look deeper than what we are just reading and giving us several choices of writing that can help us achieve our goals.

A community must be able to comprehend the language being used in their group. Each community can develop different abbreviations, acronyms or words within their groups and it is important that their members understand them so that they are able to communicate effectively and help them reach their community goals.

“Individuals might pay an annual subscription to the Acoustical Society of America but if they never open any of its communications they can not be said to belong to the discourse community, even though they are formally members of society” - John Swales (Pg. 472)

What John believes is that although you are part of a community of you do not carry some type of communication with its members then you cannot be part of it. Being able to share your experiences and beliefs with the rest of the community opens up a gateway to be able to move forward as a group towards achieving the community goal.

“It might be helpful to think of genres as textual tools used by groups of people as they work toward their desired ends; genres and the conventions that guide them change as the community discovers more efficient adaptations, as group membership changes, or as the group’s desired ends change.” - John Swales (Pg. 467)

What Swales is saying is that communities can change. That although they all have one common goal and they are used to doing things one way, the entire community can change their perspective and take on new ideas as members change and their group grows and new ideas are implemented. However the goal is to change together as one group, so that they may all adopt the same new ideas and work towards the new proposed goals jointly.

John Swales describes discourse communities as a group of people who form close groups in which the members have a common goal in mind depending on the genre of their community. In order for them to be considered a discourse community Mr. Sawles states that they must meet 6 characteristics that join them in achieving a certain goal. Although there could be changes throughout the course of the community, one thing always remains constant, and that is that the organization formed all have one goal or purpose that they pursue.

She never censored me or regulated which plays I could or could not participate in. ” - Adrien Pitchman

Although his mom didn’t push him to a particular play she did push him into theatre by taking him to it and letting him experience that and only that. With his mother being his informal institutional sponsor, and her pushing him into only theater and the arts she gains recognition when her son excels at this but it makes me wonder if he could’ve become something different at all. If her son was meant for more but because he was pushed in this direction then this is what he had to fall in love with.

What I take from this is that in order to keep up with modern literacy sponsors, they want the sponsored to be taught in the newer literacy that they are coming up with instead of the old. By forcing the sponsors to only teach the sponsored the new era methods, it brings the sponsors direct benefits as they can claim that it was their method that proved effective in the sponsored life and not the old methods.

What Pitchman is saying is that his learning, his future, the knowledge that he acquired at this school relied solely on what the people on the school board deemed necessary for his education, not necessarily what he wanted or needed to learn. By limiting his immediate institutional sponsor to the things that they were able to teach the sponsored only got partial education and only what others wanted him to learn not what he wanted to learn.

Brandt is explaining that in some instances like that of Dwayne Lowery’s, you might get an opportunity to advance your literacy and gain access to move up the social system. However this might also leave the door open for someone else to open up competition of more well literate and well educated people to gain the opportunity to take the same job you worked hard to earn a different way.

The sponsored will never be able to all be on the same page as we are all guided by the social and economical ambiance we are born and raised into. The stigma that surrounds each and everyone of us leads us mostly to just follow the same literacy that we are brought up in and we rarely stray from what we are taught. If we hispanics are brought up with telenovelas, mexican recipies, old traditions and knowing two languages then that is more than likely what we will pass on to the next generation. In the same token, every different ethnicity will also pass on what they are taught to learn and guide themselves and each other down the same path and will hardly stray into learning or knowing anything different and the sponsors depend on that to keep their politics, practices and economies alive.
