'Canopy II' in my studio.
'Canopy II' Lino Ink on Clear Polythene Sheet, 2x3m. Designed for the exhibition 'Backlight' on the Paint Corridor at my university (NUA) in November 2013, this painting/installation is a development on my original canopy painting that I made in May for my project 'NOCTURNAL' whilst in Spain (read about this here). However, for this work, the viewer is invited to stand beneath and look up through the painting. The canopy of trees, based on a photograph taken in Bucklesham Palace Gardens, acts as a window frame for viewing the sky; a notion inspired by Turrell's Skyspaces. Therefore the sky overhead central Norwich becomes the subject, seen through the ink framework.
