âIf it meant you wouldnât die.â Eduardo answered honestly. He knew heâd lose and that it would be pointless and meaningless at that, but he decided he would have done it for Esme.
Eduardo wondered then what their children looked like, how many did they have, what where their names, was he a good father? But all of those questions blurred into the back of his mind when Esme told him she loved him. âYou do?â His lips spread into a wide grin, momentarily forgetting that they had been fighting, or that Esme was going to throw herself into a fight to the death. âI love you too.â He replied, because it felt like it had been stuck in the back of his throat since that first time heâd uttered it.
He exhaled heavily, âMaybe⊠just for tonight, we could pretend none of this stuff exists?â Eduardo suggested, because he didnât know how to process needing to witness this, and potentially lose her, âGo somewhere. Just us.â

It was the answer that Esme had expected. Which was exactly why it wouldnât do anything to help. The fact that he would die for her was stupid and he should know that. It didnât escape her the kind of sacrifice heâd be willing to make, but she wouldnât entertain it in case he decided to play hero.Â
She could see all the questions in his eyes, about their children, what happened to them and their future together. She couldnât bear to tell him about the heartache, especially if they could avoid it now. He had been the best father, the best partner and husband. âOf course I do, Eduardo,â she replied. It was impossible to see him smiling at her and not give in, finding herself smiling up at him. It was good to know that he still loved her and that hadnât changed, despite her not deserving it.Â
âMaybe,â she agreed, wrapping her arms around his neck. âI think Iâd like a chance to pretend the other stuff doesnât exist.â If she could recall, that was how she had ended up pregnant in their future but she was prepared for that now. âIâll follow you anywhere you want to take me.â
Eduardoâs arms easily wound themselves around Esmeâs waist, pulling her against him, âThen weâll pretend none of this exists.â He murmured, leaning down to press their foreheads together. Even if it was only for one night before the realisation came crashing down again. He stayed like that for a moment, before his arms slipped away to take one of her hands instead. âCome on.â Eduardo grabbed a few blankets off the side of the bed and led her back through the house to where his truck was parked around the back. He opened the door for her, deciding to steal a kiss from her on her way past him, âDo you want to stay on land this time?â He asked her with a smile lifting his lips. Somehow being on the water made Eduardo feel like they could be further away, but he would settle for a quiet spot on land for her.
