RSA Training Melbourne: Do I Need It?
RSA or Responsible Service of Alcohol is a mandatory training course that needs to be completed by anyone who is involved in serving, offering or selling alcohol in Melbourne and the rest of Victoria.
Course is regulated by the Victorian Commission of Gambling and Liquor Regulations (VCGLR) and aims to provide people working in the industry with knowledge on various alcohol-related topics, from facts about the industry and effects of alcohol on the body to fines and benefits of responsible service of alcohol. It also teaches how to recognise signs of intoxication, refuse service and unpleasant situation at the workplace.
Although it may be not as exciting as the trip to Las Vegas, it gives participants understanding of what to expect when you are on the other side of the bar serving customers. RSA training has role-plays which were designed to simulate real life situations. Course outlines legal rights of the server, knowing which would be quite beneficial when refusing someone a service.
RSA training course goes for 4 hours and participants issued with Victorian RSA (which you'll need for work in Victoria) and RSA Statement of Attainment (which could be used to obtain other states certificates when you travel) on the day (that is, of course, if you pass end of the day assessment).
All that said, we think it's great start for people who are thinking about hospitality job. For the people, who are already in the industry, it's a must (unless, you would like to pay a hefty fine).
For everything you need to know about RSA in Melbourne, visit www.rsainmelbourne.com.au (that's our RSA dedicated website).
So if you are thinking about getting alcohol related job or just got one, our advise is to book your seat, get it done and try enjoy it (seriously it's not that bad).
Red Card Vs White Card
What's the difference between Red Card and White Card?
If only I got a dollar for every time I've heard that question :)
Anyway, long story short, a white card is the new red card. Before 2009, each state had different colour cards (e.g. green card in NSW, red card in VIC, blue card in QLD) which were only valid in their respective states. After 2009 national approach has been introduced to unify construction induction training. That's when the white card took over the colour cards. It's pretty much the same general construction induction training, but the white cards are nationally excepted and red cards only valid in Victoria. Red cards are still accepted in Victoria.
So when somebody asks you to do your red card training (that's in Victoria), they actually mean white card training.
