Year two, concert three: the calm before the storm. Had Symphonic Band students do set up this year since I have a different class schedule and got the green light to do it the afternoon before. Aretha Franklin, the “Queen of Soul,” died Thursday in her home city of Detroit after battling pancreatic cancer. Her death was confirmed by her publicist, Gwendolyn Quinn. She was 76.

Franklin sold more than 75 million records during her life, making her one of the best-selling artists of all time. She took soul to a new level and inspired generations of singers who came after her.

No one’s life can be condensed to one word — but Aretha Franklin came close when she sang one word: “respect.”

“Respect” was written by the great Otis Redding. In his version, a man is pleading, offering his woman anything she wants in exchange for her respect. He sang: “Hey little girl, you’re sweeter than honey / And I’m about to give you all of my money / But all I want you to do / Is just give it, give it / Respect when I come home …”

Aretha changed those lyrics to demand parity. “Oooh, your kisses,” she sang, “Sweeter than honey / And guess what? / So is my money …” In her hands, “Respect” became an empowering song — for black women and for all women. It was a No. 1 hit in 1967, and it became her signature song.

Franklin was 25 years old when “Respect” was released. But she had been singing since she was a small child in her father’s New Bethel Baptist Church.

Her music did the crucial work of art in the 20th century: It captured the experience of living through profound change and showed how to preserve integrity in its wake. She was a central player in the civil rights movement, American democracy’s fundamental historical struggle. The key words in Franklin’s most famous songs — respect, freedom, the word chains turning in a deliberate slip of the tongue to change — articulate personhood by connecting the body to the mind, the feet that wander to the arms that hold loved ones close. And the voice that echoes in our memories, from its belly growl to those heaven-hitting squalls, embodies liberty itself.

the groupie, lori mattix, said in an interview with thrillist that she lost her virginity to him in 1973 when she was 15. but in an earlier interview with paul trynka, she claimed it happened in october 1972 when she was only 14. she also completely changed the narrative, first saying she snuck into his hotel room and later deciding he approached her at a restaurant. 

also, according to another ex-groupie, she was confirmed in a relationship with jimmy page in the summer of 1972, well before bowie ever toured in california, where she lived.

he was pretty vocal about his stance against p-dophilia as he wrote “shopping for girls” about child trafficking in thailand, threatened to fire his drummer for sending teenage girls to his hotel room, and refused to perform the kiss scene written into the movie labyrinth because jennifer connelly was 14 at the time.

its good to fact check before spreading accusations as serious as this, especially about an activist who campaigned against racism against aboriginal people in australia, openly criticized MTV for not playing music videos by black artists, and, with his wife iman, donated millions of dollars to various human rights organizations in the third world.
