I would like you to remember that Paralympions are OLYMPIC LEVEL ATHLETES.

How would it feel if I compared your output to that of a literal olympic athlete and used that to justify not helping you or giving you what you need?

Every disabled person has heard shit like this and I’m tired of it. We all are.

Abled people see incredible Olympic-level disabled athletes, and assume we’re all just perfectly capable of this level of activity when many of us are trying to not shatter into pieces when we tie our shoes. I think it’s one of the reasons so many people think disabled people are lying or faking.

I broke three ribs coughing— a normal cough, not a severe illness. I broke my foot in 8 places walking down the street. I’ve thrown my back out by sitting on the sofa. Blew out my knee bending down to tie my shoes. Popped shoulder out of socket reaching for a cup of tea.

I LOVE that there are Olympic-level disabled athletes who are capable of this athleticism, who can accomplish so much.

But most nights, I am not even capable of making my own dinner. Which is a problem because my shih-tzu doesn’t like to cook.

So please stop assuming that just because one disabled person can accomplish so much (yay them!!), it’s that easy for the rest of us.

Hell, men do it all the time with abled female Olympians! Think of how many times we've made fun of the "average man" who thinks he could out-serve Serena Williams.

And it's absolutely absurd, because every person who lives long enough will eventually become disabled. They will eventually develop a condition, eventually need a cane-- even if it's a temporary disability like breaking a leg. Every person will develop disabilities if they live long enough. But the vast majority of people seem to think that they are bullet-proof, and if they can do it, everyone else just isn't trying.
