hi so i was just told i have to leave the game because my muse possibly consumed an anime that was alleged to have problematic content. i wasn't going to post anything and bow out with grace but i am genuinely so perplexed by this whole thing.
made in abyss is the anime in question. the anime is heavily edited for korean consumption and even still in western it currently airs on adult swim, is streamable on amazon prime, has streamed on disney+, hulu and netflix. if the anime was even close to as problematic as the manga, it would have never made it to any of these, especially not disney+. i’d advise you to look into it yourselves.
in a live last year woozi was asked to recommend anime's he'd watched but he said he couldn't recommend any. he began to list some he'd started/thought about starting recently and among that list was made in abyss but stated that he hadn't gotten to watch it because he had been so busy. i repeat he hadn't gotten to watch it!!! because he'd been busy!!!!
whether he did or didn't, consumption does not equal endorsement. of all the research i've done since this dropped, made in abyss is revered and won awards for it's story-telling and any problematic scenes that are in it are few and far have been widely criticized by people who watch it. like is with most tv shows. if we were holding everyone to the same standard, anyone who watched shows like euphoria (with a statutory r*pe storyline), game of thrones and writers thirsting over billy loomis (who commited sa and murder) should also be banned.
here are some links if you'd like to actually be informed on this:
essay from a redditor who watched the show tweet thread from someone else who watched the show another tweet thread from someone who watched the show a redditor thread about the anime adaptation a list written by a woman with mia as one of the best animes a western actor talking about made in abyss a tik tok about the anime
let's all be honest here, these are grown ups with critical thought. i highly doubt any of them, idols or emily would be risking their careers even mentioning something that did have anything even close to what is being accused. let's be real if western celebrities/muses aren't held up to the same standard then this is literally rooted in xenophobia and nothing else.
