1.05.18 Reflection of Presentation:
Today we had to present out presentations to Dem , Johnny and the rest of the group. This was a very good experience as it has allowed me to see all different elements of my work and get the opinion of other people. It has also enabled me to reflect on what went wrong and what id do differently for next years projects. It had taught me i really needed to allow enough time to develop my final pieces as this always seems something i rush and over look all of the possible outlooks. It has also taught me that i need to consider more of what i want the audience to get out of my pieces rather than me getting carried away with the creation of the process.
Presentation :
This is my presentation ready for Tuesday.
Evaluation Of the Project :
Overall I have really enjoyed this project as it was a chance of working in a completely different field. When first choosing the project i thought it was right up my street as it was involving art and science which is what my work in mainly based around. However I would also say this is one of the projects i have struggled with the most so far at uni. I believe this is because i got so obsessed with the ideas with criminology such as the murder cases and programmes that I found it hard to make my interests and finding in an art piece as I didn't know what media would reflect it. With All of my other projects i have always chosen a ‘none art material’ and tried to make something out of it. As i always get so excited with my projects this is what i lacked with this project at the start as i wasn’t excited with the process. After going to the Tate Liverpool something clicked and i was able to start experimenting with Wax and i got really excited and engrossed in the process. I am really grateful of this project as it has taught me to be alot more open-minded about my work and to explore more paths before starts the piece. It has also taught me that in 3rd year i really need to explore all options and find my passion very early on in order to get the best out of my pieces. I also think it really helped by having two different tutors as Dem is from an art background and Johnny is from a Criminology, this allowed us to get different opinions in order to better our work and see it from each subjects point of view. It was also very exciting to get the chance to go to court as this is something i probably wouldn’t of done without doing this project it allowed us to get an insight into what criminology students do.
My Final Piece
Overall I am really happy with my Final Piece as one Sculpture with many faces. I have really experimented with this piece as it has had many twists and turns as to what pattern it was going to create. By adding more wax on top of the first made sculpture was a really good move as it has allowed it to become stronger and more of a balanced sculpture. I also wanted to try and make the expanding pieces of the sculpture include the brain abit more, rather than it looking like the brain had been stuck onto the side of it. I also really like how the Blue aspects of the paint worked. I wanted the blue to be present but not too in your face. I left parts untouched, some parts sprayed and some parts had splatters.
Discarded Plastic Bags by Khalil Chishtee , 2013
These are images of sculptures that have been created from discarded plastic bags. Artist Khalil Chishtee creates these sculpture to reflect the feelings of sorrow , dejection and victimhood. He also links it to the human experience as the material is something we throw away on a daily basis. I really like how these pieces have a dramatic theme but seem so elegant and pretty.
Urs Fischer , 2011
Urs Fisher creates sculptures in a very unique way as he creates wax sculptures but then allows them to remelt and drip in order to create texture and depth to them. They all show a different state of emotion as they tell as story with the dripping technique.
This is the second part to creating my final piece. Once i had created the first piece of my sculpture i wanted to add more to my piece in order to make it stronger and bigger. I left the first part in the cold water and i then melted more wax to be poured over. I started by just pouring it in the sections that were thinner or didn't have as much going on within them. This has made the piece a lot bigger and more dramatic.
This is a video of me creating my final piece ( I'm well aware that i look really angry but i was getting very frustrated as i knew in my head what i wanted to create and as the wax is so uncontrollable this was proving difficult).
These are a few images of me experimenting with the idea of incorporating blue paint into the piece. i feel as just white it looks too much like soap and lacks the element of excitement and texture. I really like the effect the blue spray paint gives off the sculpture as it stops it looking ghostly. I want to recreate this sculpture as I'm not happy with how the brain mould isn't as dominant as i would of liked. However i really liked the shape that this sculpture created.
I started to play round with using white wax to create my final piece. As i can't control the wax to a certain degree creating my final piece is going to be a case of creating as many wax sculptures until I'm happy with the outcome. I am really happy with how this piece has turned out as it has allowed me to get a fuller shape of the explosion within ‘Venables mind’. The only problem with this sculpture is how the mould has been taken into the sculpture to become part of it. This has then meant the brain structure shape isn't as clear as i would of liked.
Mock Presentations
24.04.18 -
Today we went over to the Curzon Building in order to have a mock presentations in the Court room. This was really needed as i wasn't sure of what to expect for the final assessment. We all have our presentations one by one which was good to see how each person approached the presentation. The main points suggested to me was to :
1. Make sure I'm critical of what ive done
2. Justify and explain why i have made each decision
why blue ?
why wax ?
why the brain ?
3. Look at Expanding my final piece by maybe trying to link the idea of touch into it.
These are things i am going to look into this week before making my final presentation.
Final Decisions :
So after trying to experiment i wasn't feeling as excited about the process of the brick idea. I really liked some elements of it but it was working probably as i need a full brick mould. Ideal i would want it to be the exactly the same as the one used. However my problem with this is not being able to get in with Gay or the workshop in time for the deadline. I want to stick to the idea of creating the brain mould and making an explosion of wax , i will then cover the wax creation in a range of blue splatters to link it to the crime scene.
The purpose of the work :
Wax - it is used in criminology in order to make reliefs of footprints.
Blue Splatters - James was covered in these before being killed
Brain Shape - All of my research has been into the idea of how everyone is born a killer but it takes something to trigger it. This ‘ brain explosion’ shows how much james was twisted and evil in the head to of been able to commit the crime he did’.
Blue ???
I want to create my piece in white and then use a range of techniques to splatter blue spray paint onto the wax. I feel the by having the blue it links it to the crime sense as it was what was put over James before the murder. I also think it gives the piece bit of my personality. On the final piece i want to create bigger and more splatters of paint to really show the blue with the piece.
Experiment : This is an experiment of trying to create a brick shape wax creation. This didn't work well at all as it the wax just all crumbled and snapped. I'm not sure if its because the surface area wasn't bigger enough or because there was too much wax in it.
Experiments:
The inside of the brick is the most interesting part for me as it tells a story and says where it has come from. I tired to get the imprints by using the first time with clay and the second with wax. Both of them worked really well as they are able to get a good definition of the marks and the shape of the brick. However i don't think this is going to work as well with the explosion of the wax creations i want to make.
As it was a brick that was mainly used to kill James i wanted to experiment with the shape of the brick and how i could get the shape incorporated with wax creation. This is a type of house brick that is commonly found so it is probably something that was easy to find for Jon Vendables.
